This is misleading. Sooooooo ... 1) You have to have the right credit card, specifically one that has primary coverage. Most cards that offer coverage only offer secondary which comes after anything that is not covered by your insurance. 2) Call your insurance rep. Unless you have insurance for your personal vehicle and not just liability you most likely won't be covered. Or in situations where you own a corolla and are renting a minivan or suv, your insurance might only cover up to the same comparable vehicle you have. In addition he does not mention Loss of Use which insurance rarely covers. Loss of use is basically the daily charge that the rental company adds for every day the vehicle is in the repair shop. Read the fine print....

I’ve seen about 10-15 customers over the years that have been royally screwed by thinking their credit card covers them on a rental car. Turns out actually getting them to cover it vs saying they will is a huge difference. Anywhere from 80-95 percent of the claims filed to credit card company’s are denied due to the fact that they will find a way to say you broke the contract(for example if at all you drove on a gravel road, could even be construction on a major highway and they would void the coverage) best advice actually find out what they do cover and what they don’t cover. Just bc a commercial says your good doesn’t mean it’s always true.

DW is voided if an unauthorized person was driving the vehicle and wrecked, driving under the influence, if you were arrested, or if you were negligent. Roadside Assistance covers your basic needs and covers if you lose the keys. Supplemental Liability covers if you hit someone or their property up to $300,000 in damages and even death possibly. Personal Effects Coverage covers if someone breaks into the vehicle and steals your personal belongings when you’re in or away from the rental. We don’t scam you. Many CC try to deny the claim . Courts tend to agree with documented details . Here’s better advice. ALWAYS travel with a copy of your insurance declaration page regardless if it’s through your car insurance or credit card. Of course the average person doesn’t have it nor are they able to find it online so they’re essentially “forced” to pay out of pocket for additional insurance they already have. Safe travels y’all!

Insurance doesn’t cover Loss of Use, but the rental car agency’s damage waiver does. Don’t get insurance advice from someone who isn’t licensed. Call your agent and check your coverage!
I had to pay out of pocket for a pot hole that ruined two tires. Plus over $800 in towing. Then I had to file a claim through both. Then get my money back weeks later. Plus my insurance rate went up, due to filing a claim. I should have gotten the waver.
Take photos/video when you turn-in rental cars, and be sure to include a PHOTO/video OF the FULL GAS TANK if you filled it up yourself (and keep your gasoline receipt!! There was this new rental car company I tried out in Los Angeles LAX, and the car return attendant tried to charge me $89 for refilling my "empty gas tank"; but luckily I'd taken a full video of my car along with showing the full gas tank view and submitted that to customer service, and they didn't charge me. That sounds like a challenge. I don't have to be in the car right?
Shame your credit card wont save you from an arrest when Hertz say you stole the car you rented.

I used to work for entreprise rent a car. I sold the sh!t out of rental insurance It bailed me out too because I wrecked one of their vehicles, so I know it works lol. What you fail to mention is your personal insurance’s deductible. With most car rental insurances average price for coverage being $30 a day, a 7 day rental of $210 in insurance is better than having to pay a $500 deductible or even higher deductible for some people and even possibly increasing your monthly rate. Always buy the insurance on a vehicle you’re renting.

Enterprise’s protection products are there to ensure we don’t file a claim with your insurance, collect your deductible, or raise any of your premiums. Our damage waiver (depending on locations) is $30/day for cars and $35/day for premium vehicles and SUVS. It’s entirely up to you whether or not you chose to go through us to protect the vehicle for you.
$40 you don’t have to worry about insurance premiums going up if you’re at fault

Check with your insurance to be sure but if they do go for it. Declining the coverage on an 11 day rental with Dollar saved me $800.
your insurance company wont cover the money they lose for not renting it out
If you don't already have car insurance, you wont have liability coverage FYI. Credit cards only cover you for collision.
Not all credit cards or insurance companies cover loss of use, administrative fees and the fact that your premiums may go up. I would opt in for the DW.
Same things with cell phones. They will reimburse you if your phone is stolen. Thats why phone companies want you to use a debit card for a discount but if you use a credit card they wont. They do it so u can buy their insurance
He definitely doesn’t know what he’s talking about , why tf would your insurance not take your deductible for one
If you take cdw and there’s damage they won’t go after your insurance company so your insurance rates won’t go up for a claim . Also in many cases the credit card company won’t make a decision on payment till they have someone inspect the vehicle . So in the mean time you are getting the rack rate added to potential total . Many CC try to deny the claim . Courts tend to agree with documented details . At most airports there’s tons of cameras that are videoing the car before you leave the facility and there’s even cameras recording your return to facility.
my credit card does not cover insurance or their insurance policy so not too sure what this guy is talking about 🤷 anyways, I have a bus pass 💀
It's best to have peace of mind, just pay for the extra coverage. It's like trying to save $20 on a connection flight instead of flying direct then ended up wasting your whole day, not worth it.
How much will your insurance cover though? If you drive into someone’s Mercedes Benz and it costs 50,000 in repairs. Then your insurance only covers 30,000 your screwed then.
Is always better to have the full cover directly with the company when is renting a car…..if I am in holiday I don’t want worry about anything!!!!!!
Amex covers $75k up to 100k as primary coverage. Depending on your card it could cost you $15 for 40 days of coverage. Varies per card
I have Discover and MasterCard (via Ulta) and neither credit card company covers rental cars. Usually its for the black card members who have like 15K limits etc. I always get the waiver. Its more pricey but its worth it. One time the windshield on my rental car had a crack in it. Not sure what happened but I didn't pay anything out of pocket for that crack. My dad on the other hand cheaps out and he got side swiped by another car. He had to replace their side mirror for $300. So, I say go for the insurance unless your CC covers it, your personal policy covers it or you're balling lol
Here’s better advice. ALWAYS travel with a copy of your insurance declaration page regardless if it’s through your car insurance or credit card. Car rental companies want to make money and the latest trick I’ve seen is where they ask to see your declaration page (electronic or paper, whatever floats your boat). Of course the average person doesn’t have it nor are they able to find it online so they’re essentially “forced” to pay out of pocket for additional insurance they already have. Safe travels y’all!
Some cards offer primary insurance on rentals, meaning you don't even need to involve your personal car insurance.
Not good advice. Primary goes to your insurance and card acts as a secondary but it’s not end all be all. Still have to file a claim, premiums still likely go up and any kind of towing charging 99% of the time would not be covered. Not to mention that insurance policies and credit card can vary greatly, so exactly what’s covered and what type of vehicle you were driving could lead to minimal help from insurance. Always take the rental insurance if you can afford it but stick with your own liability and other stuff
Pay the insurance and deductibles in case of damage, and do the reclamation to your credit card insurance with the final invoice from rental car
I don’t even insurance so I’m getting their goddam insurance lmao
They don’t cover loss of use 😢
If you can deny the coverage. It’s obviously elective.
Not all credit cards do that. I personally called about this on one specific card and they said, nope.
You still would have to pay everyday that the car is in the shop and not being rented regardless and the added insurance is so that if you get in a accident with the rental but still need a rental, the rental agency will give you another vehicle no questions asked and you won’t be paying a deductible on the accident you had on the rental through your insurance.
You forgot to mention, loss of use the company will charge, no DC or personal insurance covers that, and most DC now don't cover car rentals,. If your drive a beater with pip, that insurance will do nothing on a rental. Scrap advice here
You have to pay everything out of your pocket and wait for the insurance to reimburse and remember you are not in the same country and this will take time and stress you out. I always take full insurance for ease of mind and if I book the car online I do it without the online insurance, take the insurance directly from the supplier and you will not pay an extra penny
So you wanna go through your insurance and deal with that hastle when your on vacation instead of walking away that’s stupid 😂
Then your insurance rates will go up . 😊
Not necessarily, credit card companies don’t cover for uninsured or underinsured motorists or liability if you hit a 3rd party. So if you get into an accident that’s your fault or someone hits you that’s not fully insured, you aren’t getting reimbursed plus you insurance policy goes up either way when you get into an accident whether you are at fault or not. Credit cards don’t reimburse you for you monthly policy going up for 6 months. In the long run, you are still paying more when you could just pay the protections at the rental car place. I work in insurance so I know…
Even if your credit card has insurance, you the rental company will still charge you and you have to wait for the reimbursement from the credit card company. Personally thats too much of a hassle for me so i’d opt for the zero liability coverage.
I have my personal insurance setup to be able to drive any car, regardless of who owns it, with full collision, maxed out for everything else including uninsured driver, passenger, property, etc and I have a $100 deductible. Covers me in a car worth up to $150k. My wife and I together are $130 a month lol I do have some rental insurance on the credit card I rent with too, but I don’t rely on it. It’s a back up.
thx so much!
And always check your contract after you leave the facility. Some car rental reps are assholes and will still add their insurance without you noticing it and you will have a hard time trying to get a refund.
You didn’t mention loss of use and liability insurance, most cards if not all do not have that. Basically check with your insurance on these. Also if this is a business rental will your personal ins cover? What about vehicles larger than 8 passenger? Those transit 12 pax are popular with large groups. Cards don’t cover them. Better be safe than sorry.
Not all credit cards cover rental car insurance only select cards do, so please do your own personal research and pay with the card that has rental coverage.
Make sure to read fine prints. Ontario man just got his ram 1500 stolen and cc company refused to pay as it didn't have the coverage f9r stolen cars. He's stuck with 82k candian dollars

Car insurance doesn’t cover rental cars lol. The rental car coverage you pay for on your policy is if you’re in an accident and you need a rental because of said accident. 99% of credit card coverage only goes into effect after you’ve expended your liability of your auto insurance policy.
