So something terrifying about this prototype is it’s designed to have a greatly reduced thermal signature, and the hybrid diesel/electric drive has an electric only mode. This means at night, the tank would be almost completely invisible to 1st and 2nd gen thermal optics, and make very little noise.

The Abrams X is a test bed vehicle and even the maker, GDLS, says so. They have said there are some features the Army will like and some they won't. It's like the K51 Panther is not in any military right now.

The Abrams X is a testbed maybe 70% of this tech will be used. The US army is reluctant to give up it's 4th crew member and the autoloader. Autoloaders aren't always a good idea have you ever considered why Abrams don't have one. It's cause the ammo when the loader isn't grabbing a fresh round to load up is behind a big plate of steel in a ammo compartment. So unless your hit while he is grabbing a round you don't have to worry about the ammo all going off at once. But with a autoloader you can get hit at any time in a the turret and have it explode on you and kill all of your crew before they even have a chance to escape.

To be totally honest, as a big fan of the Armored Cav, Artillery, and all things Infantry (daughter was infantry at the Big Red 1 in Kansas), the "X" is a terrifying leap forward. After working in IT for a number of years, seeing AI taking over so much of the information technology world (IT and IoT (Internet of Things)), I hate to imagine having machines with this capability being controlled by some dictator somewhere. And, as we all know, it's not a matter of good guys keeping the best toys, it's a matter of who can afford them.

My take on this whole ordeal - Remember: what you know, our enemies know. A project so advanced being brought out to the public sphere like this indicates a propagandistic value rather than a strategic one. If this were truly a skunkworks-level military project - the silver bullet that destroys anything and everything our enemies could possibly fathom to field, we wouldn't be hearing about it until a year from when it had already started production and neither would our enemies. If anything, this tank is a several billion dollar threat; it isn't going to be fielded anytime soon because if even one is destroyed it loses all of its value.

I do think thw reason it stayed a 120mm is most likely because of being the NATO standard, always good to have compatilibility with allies if the gun can be sold as export. But i bet since this tank seems like a test bed for tech the cannon is also modular and can be upgraded in the future.

Unlikely. You start running into the same problem the Germans in WW2 had with newer tanks. They kept using the same Maybach powerplants in increasingly heavier tanks, and asking too much of the engines. Not to mention destroying bridges, overworking transports, and adding the risk of not being able to recover them when they broke down.

The reason Russia has lost so many tanks stems from the fact they were used by poorly trained tank crewmen Ukraine use the same tanks and those tanks have helped them win pretty much every single engagement and counter-offensive against the Russians the tank is still one of the most feared war machines on the battlefield when used properly.

Hybrid is the only practical option where we could use Electric Motors. Full Electric is just too dangerouse and expensive and it will probably bring lot new problems to solve. Checkout the AbramsX Tech Demonstrator Tank. The tank is powered by a Hybrid diesel-electric Cummins engine that they claim offers up to 50% incease in fuel efficiency. That would definitely help with how thirsty the Army for fuel lol. Unfortunately, the AbramsX is only a prototype that is intended to show off the potential of pursuing these technologies to Pentagon. IMO a tank like that is definitely atleast a decade away to be remotely considered an option

They should put a surface to air missile launcher on the rear of the turret. That way it could be reloaded from inside the tank and fight land and air targets simultaneously

Thank you for your comment. While incorporating a surface-to-air missile launcher on the rear of the turret may offer some advantages, the design considerations for balancing firepower, mobility, and crew safety make it a complex decision for tank manufacturers.
