The gun put out a lot of fire, but you still needed a few 2 1/2 handlines to hit the fire the deck gun couldn't reach. The limited angle of the deck gun prohibited hitting any of the fire in the ceiling of the garage.

Mike Pertz who does instructional and educational firefighting videos has seen this. The firefighter on top using the deck gun or master stream if you will hadn’t received training on how to operate the system. It has to be unlocked in order to get a directional control system.

I was almost going to commend this department for approaching this fire correctly but then they drastically dropped the ball. First, they were too slow in their movements. Second, the guy on the Deck Gun didn't know how to adjust it. All that water was wasted. 1. Lay in the hydrant line. 2. Activate the pump on Tank Water. 3. Man the Deck Gun AND KNOW HOW TO USE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4. Aim the nozzle at the burning material near the unburned area and open the valve so every drop gets on the fire. 5. Pull a 2-1/2" line towards the unburned area to surgically apply the water.

@@skidude8989 This is the job and responsibility of every fire department and firefighter. "Eliminate the threat Quickly and Safely while using the Least amount of water." Each of those words has a meaning. Doing each of those requires the ability to Think. The American fire service doesn't do any of those things and 12 years of these videos prove that.

They're using the deck gun to knock down the major fire, controlling it, then they will move in with landlines to mop up what the deck gun didnt get. The officers are prepared for when they get a line crew in and lead them in. This is obviously a volunteer fire department by the siren wailing at the beginning of the video. We did this procedure many times due to the lack of manpower of the first due engine, if the circumstances and type of structure allowed it. If you think your smarter than the guys on this video, go fill out an application for your local volunteer fire department and see what it's really like. I did my time more than fifteen years ago when my health forced me out of it. I was a volunteer fireman for about twenty-five years before that. I miss it terribly.

Ronald Robertson first off...they had no clue what they were doing....the first guy on the deck gun was clueless on how to operate it. The second guy wasn’t much better. No less than 5 different FF’s came up to the pump panel to show the chauffeur how to use it. As far as chiefs all geared up to lead their men inside.... fire is through the roof from front to back and it’s venting out all the garage doors. There no going inside on this one. More training is in need for this department

It's possible if there's a fog nozzle on the gun. But a straight or solid stream is better. Plus a bigger smooth bore tip will shoot more gpm's which is needed to put out the fire.

Poor chap must've thought some aeroplane was about to pass under after an inaugural flight. But I have to admit though, when used correctly, deck guns have some awesome power. After all, it knocked back that fire in about two minutes flat once aimed right. I'm British and I sincerely believe our fire engines could benefit from one of them beasts. But I reckon the engines' pumps and our water mains won't be up to it.

As an European collegue a few thing that suprise me, besides the other comments posted. Why do you still build your pumpers like 30 years ago? Why don't you make the deck gun better accesible, or remote controlled? And it looks nice a big pump panel, but it seems to be very complicated to operate. KISS principle. I love US fire trucks for there looks, for working with nothing beats the European style pumpers.
