    6/6 Linear momentum for just the balls is constantly changing, e.g. at the point of the highest swing it is 0. The force of gravity makes this change happen. However during a collision linear momentum is preserved because of the highly elastic material the collision happens almost instantaneously. Change in momentum is force multiplied by time (near zero). Also direction of motions of the balls is perpendicular to gravity at collision time, so no gravity contribution to change in momentum.

  • @LasVegasSummer2009
    @LasVegasSummer200911 жыл бұрын

    5/6 Linear momentum has to be always conserved for the whole system rather than just the ball. Earth is part of the system too. If you look at the experiment that begins at 0:18, the linear momentum of the balls switch between +3mv (where m is mass of each ball) and -3mv. How is linear momentum being preserved? Well, the linear momentum of the rest of the system (the stand, the table, the building, the earth and so on) changes by 6mv as that for the balls switches between +3mv and -3mv.

    3/6 So the solution for the experiment at 0:00 can't be 2 balls on the right taking off at half the velocity each post-collision, as that would not preserve v-squared while preserving v. The only solution to preserving both v and v-squared is exactly the same number of balls moving in the same direction post-collision. Another example, at 1:41 preservation of linear momentum would be satisfied by all the balls coming to rest post-collision. However that wouldn't preserve kinetic energy.

    4/6 There is no law of preservation of kinetic energy, just a law of preservation of total energy. However in this example, because the steel balls are so hard, total energy remains as kinetic energy rather than converting to other forms such as heat. If the balls were made of some other material, such as gummy bears and you did the same experiment that begins at 1:41, you would likely see that all the balls came to rest post-collision (preserving linear momentum but not kinetic energy).

    if you are starting with two balls each of mass m and velocity v,the total linear momentum becomes (m+m)*v=2mv..Then when it hit the other three balls ,the total linear momentum of 2mv is transfered along with the balls then why doesnt it becomes like the last ball of mass mm getting the velocity of 2v....the linear momentum of 2mv is also conserved here......

    If you're asking why the third ball doesn't go up with the other two when you drop two at once, you basically said it yourself. The velocity is 2mv; it would only be able to swing the third one at a velocity of 3mv (I think). If you're asking why the last ball doesn't swing higher when you drop two from the other side... I'm not sure. Edit: I found a great video describing the physics of these: kzread.info/dash/bejne/loWrltlyh8q-k7Q.html

    no duh man, im smart enough to fgure that out. im just saying the other alternative for the use, which as much as it is useful and contributional for science most people use it to kinda chill at work, or just put it on their desk at school, and while they're on a loading screen they kinda play around with it. i think you took me too seriously, chill bro (i dont mean to offend anybody by saying that i meant that in a friendly manner) so yea, while I definetly agree, its just my look at it ;p

    2/6 In the above setting when you add the law of conservation of energy and law of conservation of linear momentum and the only solution for movement is what you see. For example at 0:18 there are 3 balls striking 2 balls each with velocity v, and the only possible solution that preserves both kinetic energy and linear momentum is that post-collision 3 balls continue moving in the same direction with velocity v. Remember that linear momentum is m*v whereas kinetic energy is 1/2m*(v-squared).

    1/6 Excellent demonstration of the laws of motion! The movement of the balls is so regular because of two reasons that you usually won't see in other interactions in nature: 1) The balls are made of very hard elastic steel, so almost all energy is preserved as kinetic energy rather than being dissipated into other forms 2) There is very little dissipation of energy in the strings that the balls are suspended.

    The Moral of the Story is, In Physics, this is known as Conservation of Momentum. The initial momentum and and the final momentum is equal. This is a simple transformation of momentum from one ball to the next. Momentum is calculated as, the product of Mass and Velocity. p = mv, where both p and v are vectors.
