This is the last election I was too young to vote in. I remember watching the news that day, with the crowds of Blair supporters chanting “Tony! Tony! Tony!” And singing “Labour’s coming home”. I don’t think we’ve ever had an election before or since which caused so much enthusiasm.

1992 had ironically more enthusiasm as it had a much higher turnout of 78%, compared to 97’s turnout of 71.2%

Or more disappointed...I was in my first year of high school. As I left in 2001 there was an election characterised by apathy and disinterest.

I was never a fan of John Mayor's government but compared with the skip fire of a government we have today Mayor's team were dynamic and professional. And i feel almost nostalgic for those days.

This was the first time I had the opportunity to vote in a general election. I voted Labour of course. I remember it was a beautiful sunny day the morning after. Great days.

In the 90s we all Imagined how great the future would be flying cars , free energy , computers etc etc never did anyone say it would go downhill like it has.

After 13 years of the current "Conservative" Government there's barely a single socioeconomic measure where the UK isn't worse off than it was when Labour left office in 2010. Labour gave us more than ten years of unbroken economic growth, even with the financial crisis we were in a strong recovery in 2010. One the Tories quickly smothered and we've never recovered since.

0.1 percent growth wasn't a strong recovery. Tony Blair didn't agree with most of Brown's handling of the economy post crash. Plus the international economic boom of the 1990s and 2000s was enjoyed by all governments around the world.

​@@johnalbentBy the same token so was the crash. The Tory cuts however almost caused a double dip recession, which certainly wasn't something that happened in the other major economies. Fast forward to now, and we're easily the weakest of the G7. The Tories own that, end of.

I think you are being vastly more uncharitable than you should be to Gordon Brown post-crash. No other world leaders had the answer like Brown and Darling did. Was it a relatively weak recovery, you could argue so. But for what its worth, Brown and Darling are largely responsible for helping mitigate the fallout from the great recession not only in Britain but the US and arguably the world at large. @@johnalbent

@SplashTasty that's codswallop. The IMF criticised him, the EU criticised him, Tony Blair criticised him, even members of his own cabinet criticised him. His bailout of the banks is taken from Milton Friedman's economic history that said the crash of 1929 wasn't responsible for the Great Depression...the banking collapse that followed it was. Nothing original to Brown.

Even if a lot of Blair’s policies ended up quite badly (and he was possibly a war criminal), in the current political climate it’s hard not to look back on this and feel melancholic. I mean, shit. What happened to us Britain?

i would agree that bringing the mass immigration of the mid noughts was a mistake. It should have been carefully managed and the driving down of wages did hit the labour party traditional base. However a large factor was due to the financial crash. Something which affected the world and was outside Labour's control.

The best 13 years of my adult life. The strongest economy the UK ever had. Under Labour we had nearly 12 years of unbroken growth. The Conservatives have barely been be able to manage 12 months. We are POORER on almost every measure compared to the Blair years.

​@@pipoo1we had continued economic growth from 1992-2008. It was the strongest economic inheritance in 100 years. So much so that the budget was in surplus. Actually Labour kept the policies in the first term.

I can scarcely think of anything more dangerous than a majority of 70+ seats for either party in the 'two idiot system'. Maggie's third term and New Labour proved that and the Tory govt we have today are proving that.

Hence why a PR system is needed more than ever. Look at countries where they have them like in Germany or Spain. You see different ideas being implemented, higher turnouts as votes/seats are counted equally (and isn't most votes wins all) and quite frankly a healthy democracy where it isn't dominated by ''two idiotic system'' to quote your words

yeah those countries are not stable and their governments are a complete mess lol at least with mandates like Blairs and Thatchers you could govern relatively cohesively for a decade and have your parties backing for key pieces of legislation like budgets and social reform. Is it perfect or even good for that matter? Definitely not. But i'd much prefer to live in a country that doesn't have constant elections and weak coalitions @@DFandV
