News at 545 (ITN) Report West (HTV West) 1977

Alastair Burnet, Richard Wyatt, Graham Miller, Ken Rees and ITV in 1977 - just a bit of it. Graham Robertson talks about unnecessary Totterdown demolition and Glyn England about nuclear power in the region. 30 and 60% pay rises and strikes. Then they head for the ad break with hilarious results!
An off-air snippet from U-matic recorded for CEGB records. Video saved by Video99 www.video99.co.uk plus a bit of post production and work on audio from Hoxa.

Very early snippet of News At 5:45. Wouldn’t have been going for a year at this point. Didn’t realise HTV used that theme music either, it was used at around the same time for Scene South East on Southern.

If memory serves, the debacle about Totterdown was that the council received one government letter of approval and went ahead with demolition before receiving a second necessary letter, which, when it arrived, blocked approval. Dear old Ken Rees, who died yesterday. I remember him asking Jeremy Thorpe at a press conference when he was under suspicion whether he had ever had a homosexual experience. Thorpe's lawyer interjected to object to such a question.

This is rare. Alistair Burnett also read News At 5.45 I was actually born in July 1977. For me I liked it when each bulletin would have its distinctive then eg News at 1, 5.45 & 10. Alistair Burnett legendary newsreader RIP

In those early days, Alastair Burnett was the main host of the 545... According to Wikipedia, Michael Nicholson hosted the 545 on Fridays but Burnett was the main reader until 1980, then after he left, Michael Nicholson and Leonard Parkin became the main presenters until about 1986... Sadly, none of those three are with us any longer

Peter Sissons also read the News at 5:45 on Fridays in the early days of the bulletin, before moving on to News at Ten for a while. Later he took Leonard Parkin's place on News at One, who took over the 5::45 bulletin for a couple of years, before returning to the 1 o'clock programme. Peter Sissons eventually left ITN for the BBC.

Back in 1993 a couple of friends heard the KLF were going to be at HTV studios on Bath Road so they went down there to see if they could meet them. They asked the receptionist if the rumour was true, and she said she'd ask Richard Wyatt to come down to confirm. They ran off as the thought of meeting such a huge local star would have been too much 🤣🤣 they were brothers also called Wyatt!

@johnking5174 in 1982, when I was 14, me & my family were on holiday in Blackpool & I were able to pick up RTE Radio 2 (now 2FM) on 612 AM. I'd heard from a relative living in Ireland that they played some great music on that station, but living in the North-East meant the signal was very weak & further compounded by Radio 4 having a relay on 603 AM. Great to hear it while on holiday though

HTV West and Westward/TSW/Westcountry both liked to imply a larger claim on the South West than was reality; in actuality the former didn't really go any further down than Taunton whilst the latter was pretty much a Devon & Cornwall station which happened to cover small bits of the Somerset/Dorset borders.
