Newcastle’s Helix District - What is it?!
In this video I take a look around Newcastle's new Helix Science and Innovation district. This land was once the site of Scottish and Newcastle Breweries.
Special thanks to Euan Lowes for designing my thumbnail and Tom Brammald from Newcastle University, who kindly allowed me to interview him and show me around.

Hi Eddy, another great video. Regarding the stone monument: In 1770, John Barras opened his brewery on the banks of the Tyne in Gateshead. In 1847, Barras brought his nephew, Col. Charles John Reed, into the business, and when John died in 1861, Charles took over the running of the brewery. In 1884, Col. Reed, realizing that the Gateshead brewery was almost at capacity, bought the defunct Tyne Brewery in Newcastle, and moved the John Barras & Co. Brewery, in its entirety, across the river. This brewery eventually merged with others to form Newcastle Breweries Ltd.

The reason it is marked established 1770 is because of one of my ancestors on my maternal side. John Barras, he established a brewery in 1770 in Gateshead. John Barras Junior took over Tyne Brewery and then subsequently Newcastle Breweries was formed. This is why a lot of S&N pubs had Barras branding.

Great video as always. My mum had an office on the top floor of the breweries block opposite St James Park for 20 plus years, was one of the last to leave when it closed for good, I also had a job in the bottling plant as a teenager during summer holidays, great times. Every time I go back to Newcastle I get a massive pang of nostalgia mixed with some sadness passing the old office block but it's good that it lives on as a viable business.

I've been to Newcastle breweries many times before it was flattened. I used to work for Rentokil doing high pressure water jetting and Newcastle breweries used to get us in to blast out the pipes that used to take the booze from different places and the smell was lovely, if you've ever walked into someone's bedroom in the morning after they've been out the night before it was just like that lol. I also went to the closing down tour at Newcastle breweries which was a very sad day but also very enjoyable at the same time and we had a few beers in the bar but they were also selling memorabilia from the breweries but didn't have the money at the time but they were selling a massive plastic brown ale bottle which I wanted because it is my favourite drink! Being from Newcastle it's always sad when something historical like Newcastle breweries closes down. 😢

Hi Eddy🙋♂️ cracking video again. A scientific tour de force developing on the site. Part of the future that's for certain. Job creation and prosperity in the coming decades 👍I clearly remember drinking mcewans best scotch in Dunston at the Dun Cow for the princely sum of 70 odd pence a pint! In the 60s my dad had a job fitting carpets in the S&N offices. He was given, straight from the production line, 4 bottles of Broon! Hot almost to the touch! The chap said to try a bottle of Broon when it was warm! Dad said it was one of the best pints he'd ever tasted! 🍻 How much kudos if PIF next year had a blue star on the next home strip? BTW, your white & black bull vlog, I replied regarding Helen notable athletic achievement at an Elswick Harriers race in the 90s 👌

There are a few backward-looking anti-science comments in the comments here which I find very concerning. Newcastle has been a worldwide centre for science and engineering since the industrial revolution, and a new science campus is absolutely fantastic news to bring talent and investment into the city. Thanks so much for the videos - I'm a geordie in exile and have enjoyed keeping up with the toon from afar. I'd love to hear a history of the music halls and theatres around Newcastle - I know a lot of the songs from Geordie Ridley and the like but not much about how people used to see them performed!

Hi Eddie love the show. Ive got a couple of ideas for future shows. Maybe something about the Academy and what DA will be aiming for. Maybe a bit of detail about what other big world clubs do like La Masia in barcelona. We should really be making these comparisons considering our new owners. I think people might also be interested in seeing the regeneration of New East Manchester and how the football investment has helped transform the place and any other similar schemes in the world. Generally interested in how elite clubs do things so potentially many different topics. Soz for the brain dump ramble hope it sparks off ideas. Tyler
@TynesideLife
Жыл бұрын
Hi mate, some great food for thought there. Have you seen my two videos on DA and what he will do for the club? These sorts of things you mention are something I think about a lot and I did a video a few weeks ago about what the club want in relation to a new training complex. Of course it’s a bit trickier with our club as there is a huge hurdle on ‘where’ they can develop in terms of the training and academy. In the video I made comparisons with Man City and Leicester. Feel free to email me as I’d like to hear other views and ideas for future videos in these areas 👍🏻

Just a thought Eddie but have you thought about splitting your channel into one for your football content and one for your lifestyle vlogs? Just thought its easier to do that earlier than later down the line. Am sure you have thought about that though. Anyway keep up the great work bud
@TynesideLife
Жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, it’s something I gave a great deal if consideration to this, for the very reasons you mention. All things considered, I went with the one channel as I’m deliberately creating content that ordinary football fans and folk will like. I’ve created ‘Playlists’ so that those who gave preferences can easily navigate the videos. I also have to consider my ‘Brand’ which is anything about Tyneside and splitting the channel up will (I believe) be a detriment to the channels. In addition, I’m not a Newcastle United daily news channel like the others and it’s not something that I want to do. If I split the channel, I wouldn’t have enough content. Currently my channel is unique and separates me from the others and I’m sure as I progresses, my content will evolve. Great suggestion and I appreciate it Martin 👍🏻
