This footage was captured in 2000/2001 so it's old school now. When the crew from the Natural History unit were filming us at work they told us to expect the finished product to be sensationalized for viewers to keep them watching and not 'change channels.' They were true to their word with much melodrama and massaging of chronology and events. The Producer actually said the documentary was being made for the guy with a 'six pack' in mind. Being young climbers we thought he meant six-pack ab stomachs (which we all had at the time ;-) but sadly he meant the guy with a six-pack of beer on the couch!

Helicopter pilots motto (particularly SAR pilots)is --If I screw up, everyone dies. So, let's not screw up. Winches?

Long lining is pretty common. You can get a bubble type side window so the pilot can look down. Our local heli company has that...

Raised potassium = crush syndrome. The only course would have been amputation (double) at the crevasse above both highest breaks. Prob Justin would have bled out. At least he knew he was found, and wasn't alone. ( some sort of on site blood warming system like heat packs on wrist, or groin area. would help in hypothermia cases. Wouldn't have helped in this case though. ). Sad for all concerned.

These guys are brave, but there's a lot they could learn from the Mont Blanc rescue team. Also, they should not have to land the chopper if they used a winch...which would expedite the rescue. Mont Blanc rescue can also be reached by mobile phone. That too makes rescue much faster. Just my thoughts.

Den Lair this is an old program an cellphone coverage isn't the greatest, these guys do a great job and on call in any weather and goes for all SAR personal

Why don't they use a winch and a winchman instead of the pilot having to guide the rope blind?

The pilot is not flying the strop blind - he can see. That was just the narrator making it sound more dangerous than it actually was :-)

Because it's a leased scenic tourist helicopter converted for rescue (seats removed) and not a specifically built rescue helicopter with all the bells and whistles. Long lining is the next best thing, I'm sure things have changed since this was filmed.
