I'd feel more comfortable traveling to SK than JPN, considering their police actually do their jobs and don't just find the first suspect guilty by default.

The channel "Casual Scholar" di a video about a month ago going into differences between North and South Korea and how the North was initially the "rich part" of the country (pre-split) while the south was more agrarian, and how that's changed since the Korean War that I found to be quite fascinating. I don't know if you'd want to react to it, but there's a k-drama on Netflix that's set on Jeju Island called "Our Blues" that's really good, assuming that subtitles don't bother you.

South Korea you tend to be in Seoul or Jeju. Most other places are nice just you don’t go anywhere near the border period.
