I had to look it up. 757-200 max range is 4500 mi. Loaded with soldiers and all their gear and accounting for the fact that the airways don't exactly follow the great circle routes, that's probably about as far as they'd care to go in one hop. I also looked up Auckland to LAX -- 6500 mi -- and Auckland to Honolulu -- 4400 mi. Hence the Samoa stop (Auckland-Samoa is about 1800 mi). I got these numbers from the Great Circle Mapper website. Greetings from NZ Alex. Love your work. Gratifying to see the RNZAF and Army off to do NZ's bit to support Ukraine. Now that NZ has its new spendy P-8 Poseidons coming onstream, it's time to retire these old dungers and plonk the dosh down for at least 2 long range A330 neos or 787s. Given how remote NZ is, the days of bunnyhopping through the islands to get anywhere should be consigned to nostalgia. RNZAF needs a quickchange aircraft capable of carrying disaster relief, troop deployment. And, of course, overfed politicians and journos on junkets.

Doesn't look like a dunger to me. P8 Posiedons are maritime patrol anti sub anti ship aircraft. These 757s are combi military passenger freight aircraft. Totally different roles. They are set up for what you speak of. And their replacement is slotted in. You make it seem like staging a flight across the Pacific is abnormal. They can fly longer hops. However when you want to maintain reserves of fuel, it is common to stage flights. Plus they often have reasons to stop at different places along the way. Such as dropping people / freight off. Or picking people up. So when applicable. You combine missions. Anyway, it doesnt matter what you do or have. You will never please everyone. Just gotta get on with it and make the best out of what you have.

the 757 is one of Boeing's best aeroplanes they have made and are well-loved around the world, to call it a old dunger and should be consigned to nostalgia makes me think you should fly Air New Zealand or maybe Qantas if you want the long haul, I hear that they do pretty good flights, PS I'm sure that Samoa and all the islands around the south pacific would disagree with you all the way,

Hopefully one day Air New Zealand will decide to launch a direct Auckland to Calgary route. So many Kiwis living in Alberta.

Interesting. I live in the North Island, New Zealand and under RNAV 27 approach for Ohakea Air Base. See this aircraft overhead fairly regularly. Indeed, it is a long way from home.

For your information ................ New Zealand purchased two Boeing 757-2K2 aircraft in 2003 for use with the Air Force Transport 40 Squadron. NZ7571 and NZ7572 were previously owned by Transavia as PH-TKA and PH-TKB respectively. They are intended for replacement but new Hercules and P8 Poseidon aircraft have taken precedence so they will be used for while yet.

Incase you are curious, New Zealand has a formidable air force consisting of two 757s and some old cargo planes. Our missions usually involve highly tactical defence training, like defending against hunger as we deliver food supplies to Antarctica....or drop bags of rice in third world countries. If we were attacked our first line of defence would be to call Australia as quickly as possible. As a last resort we'd load up on bags of rice and flour and throw them at passing fighter jets. Please think carefully before attacking New Zealand. Nobody wants to face the consequences of having to shake rice out of their hair or wash flour off of an airplane.

It's cute you think that even if a country with the capability, ability and more importantly reason to venture all the way down here to "attack" that somehow a single squadron of outdated jets is going to somehow make a difference? What a load of sheer & utter crap!!. It's not so much our quality of machinery that enables us to do some awesome humanitarian work & not just in the South Pacific but far more importantly it is the quality & the level of the expertise of the men & women that comprise the makeup of our small military force!! We have the luxury due to our small size of being able to pick the best of the best for our flight crews. They don't grab the first person who walks through the door of the recruting office!! (you wouldn't have a hope in hell of getting in) Further, you should ask the countries that NZ has helped in their time of need & want!! They are more than chuffed with the level of help & assistance they have received via the aircraft of the RNZAF as they delivered medicine & food etc, etc & what's just as important to those in need is the sight & sound & the roundel displayed on a NZ Military aircraft. When you've got almost nothing who gives a shit what type of aircraft it arrives in as long as it gets there & that is what we excell at!! We just don't talk the talk but we deliver the goods when they are really needed! So obviously going by your school boy knowledge you know nothing of the operational aspects of the RNZAF. It's time to get out of your diapers & start wearing real underwear but I suspect you have still not completed your potty training yet??

Not that few, 1,050 757s were built 1981-2004. That one delivered to Dutch airline Transavia in 1993. Sold to the RNAF 2003.

@@joeschenk8400 still quite a few in pax service in the US, but now a large proportion of the surviving examples have been converted into freighters. Your best chance of seeing one is in the dead of night or a a FedEx or UPS hub.

@@joeschenk8400 Sadly the two RNZAF 757s are expected to be replaced by 2028 - with the modifications they've been a very versatile and useful aircraft for NZ but they've had some faults and unavailability at times. Not too sure what will be chosen, we've got four P8A Poseidon's on order - so possibly something from the B737 family for commonality.

In the earlier days of Wardair, it used 727s to do Calgary to London via Iqaluit. Surprised the NZ plane would have "detoured" via Halifax. Wonder if a stop in Iqaluit is harder if you haven't "booked" fuuel well in advance (since fuel is shipped on boat during summer only).

@@B52Stratofortress1 I was in the boox The Max Ward Story" by... Max Ward. YYC-YFB = 1611nm YFB-LHR = 2195nm And this route is pretty might right on the "great circle" so very efficient.

Wardair only had one 727-100, delivered April 1966, registered CF-FUN. It was the first Boeing jet sold in Canada. It operated regularly to Europe, mostly London Gatwick, with a fuel stop. It was sold in 1973.

Prior to Sept 11, I had the privilege to sit up front several times on the YVR to Amsterdam trip Vancouver

It was on the return trip. Same stops as on the outbound trip, except YVR instead of YYC.

one can see the aircraft on flight tracking websites as well, I've seen the rznaf 757s a few times although I doubt that is what he used.

Saw this aircraft in Halifax in June: a big surprise. Clearly this is a thing. We all know that NATO is training Ukrainian troops but New Zealand? Who knew? Talk about flying below the radar....

Yeah, we operate the L118 howitzer as our main artillery piece, so a decent number of NZ artillery men are in the UK training the Ukrainian army on it.

You'll see this on almost any aircraft with a flag (USA's Air Force One, for example), because this replicates what would happen if it were possible to fly a flag on top of a plane. Just like a flagpole, if the wind is blowing to the left, the flag will appear reversed to you standing on the ground unless you walked around to the opposite side.
