New York City: A chilly day, exploring art exhibits in Chelsea...
I picked one of the coldest days of the year to go to one of the coldest parts of the city, but it's ok because we saw some great exhibits in Chelsea. In this video you'll see a number of different types of art - painting, sculpture and more.
As always details about every artist and gallery mentioned can be found below.

Well these Elizabeth Schwaiger (?) paintings were certainly worth venturing out on a cold day to see! New to me.When you think of how difficult it is to find subject matter and then realize it's under your nose. She orders the surface assuredly but as you point out there is a hint of disorder. Stay warm.

My favourite was the group show, I'll have to go on their website to see more. And sorry, I have to mention your outfit. You're always stylin' but I love your bundled up for the cold look, with the big muffs a wonderful final touch. Very cool, very "stylin'" as the kids like to say. The kids don't say that? Whatever. It makes me want to go out for a cold weather walk, except here in Toronto it's plus 4, so not exactly cold. But I'm going out for a walk anyway, just without the muffs. As always, thank you for your posts, always enjoy them.

Thanks again Mary. Only by using logic we can see that the Schwaiger paintings are representative. If we set aside some of that logic they become abstracts. They tease the brain. Great works and those brushstrokes! Confident, direct and simple but as a whole become complex.

Elizabeth Schwaiger is fantastic. Does anyone see a touch of Matisse and Raoul Duffy influence? I think they enhance her work and she makes it her own. Really enjoyed as usual Marylynn.

I liked the Jennifer Guidi work @ the 13-minute mark. Everything else was, well, let's just say (to use my favorite euphemistic saying)- the art world abhors a vacuum.

  • @jameswarhol442

So yeah, I agree that some of Schwaiger paintings have a Cecily Brown vibe- especially the orange and black palettes which is really not my cup of tea at all. I don't however see a Dutch master thing. My first thought was loosey -goosey Manet after he knocked down a few absinthe cocktails! Not sure the smaller ones in the back room work on that scale. Having said that this was one of my favorite shows this season. Her technique is really very impressive indeed. The quick, spot on brush work, the limited palette, and almost but not quite rendering of the objects and interiors made for very compelling viewing. I thought the work here was so much better than that pretentious group show at James Cohan. Pace and Marlborough also get my seal of approval. 😊

I am beginning to dislike Artists that pigeon hole themselves to a style then that's all they do.Gets boring even for an artist. When you look at Picasso Matisse for example they kept changing involving.Today's artists for most part try too hard to have a "brand" look example Guidi thumb imprint etc. Hope she doesn't do that rest of her life....
