New York cathedral struggles to save the oldest US organ

The huge organ at St Patrick's Old Cathedral in New York City is the oldest one of its size in the US. But staff are concerned that the famous instrument might not make it to its 150th birthday next year. Church funds are low and there is a lot of work to be done on the organ. To celebrate the 150th birthday of the powerful instrument, they will be launching a fundraiser in order to gather money to fix it up.
Music director Jared Lamenzo, who has become as much mechanic as he is musician, shows Al Jazeera what it takes to keep the organ's pipes in tune.

Back then there was this pneumatic thing called a Barker lever that reduced the resistance in the keys. Doesn't need any electricity.

I've always preferred tracker organs. I can hear what you mean by winding issues, sounds like the bellows need releathering. Hope you get the funding.

I got to play one of these old dinosaurs while going to school in Las Vegas, NM. A surviving ticket to the dedication recital declared it "the largest organ west of the Mississippi in 1882" (George Kilgen)

This organ is a living piece of history, and can be rebuilt to just as good as new with the right funding and man power. It would be a sin to destroy it, and an even greater sin to replace it with a Digital Allen wannabe.

fidel catsro. Speaking about idolatry, isn’t it sad how evangelical politicians twists the Bible to suit their persona, like Moore, justifying child abuse by using the blessed virgin. At least Catholics know that the Bible must be taken seriously and not literary.

They are not idols, just art. For them to Biblically be considered idols they must be 1) believed to be a manefestation of God on earth, and 2) worshiped... These statues fit none of those criterion,
