NEW YORK: 'Big Bus' City tour | He insulted me | My Bad Experience

On the 28th day of my US trip (May 2018), I booked a Hop on-hop off 'Big Bus' tour to see the popular tourist attractions in New York. I had a bad experience with the Big Bus tour Guide. Watch this video to see the Staten Island ferry tour to see a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty, New York. Also, see New York's, Central Park. #NewYork #MountainTrekkerUSA #IndianinAmerica

ABOUT ME
I'm Varun.
I am a full-time traveller now (yes, I quit my job to follow my dreams). I love solo travelling & meeting people. After travelling extensively in Incredible India for years, I stepped out of my country and realised, how beautiful the world is! I started making travel web series in Hindi full of travel tips and tricks, especially for budget travel and sustainable tourism. My dream is to inspire people to explore this beautiful world and learn the best things to make our world a better place to live in. I was awarded the prestigious 'National Tourism Award' by the Government of India for my contributions to the field of promotion of Tourism. Thanks to my viewers, I now get invitations from across the globe to visit their places and show them to the world.

Although Kevin was speaking in his natural speed and accent, where he went WRONG was " not having Respect for fellow passenger's sentiment ". That thing neither American nor Indian modern schools bother to teach.

I've been to new York twice, two things which I notice were people aren't that friendly and other is that people usually don't wanna talk to Asian people much as I tried to engage a conversation with a new Yorker, he just ignored me like I didn't existed.

That is all new yorkers in general, they really don’t give time to anybody, and its a very diverse city so they don’t really care as much abt tourists, other parts of US is much more calmer and more hospitable, but still, i love new york. Its kinda like delhi, so many things we hate and complain abt delhi but still i love delhi.

Well I'm from Washington DC and lived and traveled most of India in the 2000s. Good ole Kevin's attitude is NYC style. They're nice but don't mess with them. Being polite isn't what NY is famous for haha. You had every right to ask him to speak slower. After all you're the customer and paid for the tour. Ole Kevin's probably never been to a country and tried to understand their language. Anyway I like your videos because you give a good understanding of where you are and a bit of history and background. Much better than other videos I've seen. I like the Serbia ones too as I used to live in Poland and their language and style seems similar. Keep moving on my friend and don't worry about grumpy Kev. Varun bro, If he was sitting beside you and personally talking ONLY with u, and you were not understanding him, then it would have been completely fine to request him to speak a little slower. But, he was giving a tour and speaking in front of everyone. And while everyone have no problem understanding his accent and are listening to him patiently, you cut him off in middle and ask him to speak slower JUST FOR YOU. Its absurd to expect him to change his accent/speed just for you. So it was actually YOU being rude to him ! You could have just accepted that its unfortunate you cant understand him and kept to yourself. And he handled it well by making light of the situation by saying if he speaks slowly, it would take all day. If you don't have a sense of humor, that doesn't mean he is humiliating you. If you can give your opinion in front of everyone, why can't he right ? And moreover he came to you later and asked if you were good and genuinely tried to reason himself without getting angry. But you were still saying that you were NOT GOOD, and you were humiliated. Come on Varun ! Its not good to be so self-centered and stiff all the time. I am sure you had many good experiences in USA, so it was unnecessary of you to make a personal attack on him saying "He insulted me" in the title. Its fine if you talk about general lifestyle and culture which you don't like in USA. But please refrain from posting such personal attacks. Does it feel good to put such a title and then have your 375k subscribers supporting you and talking bad about Kevin ? (I can already see many people bashing Kevin). I am only telling all this because I like your vlogs more than vlogger in India. Thats why I am just a little disappointed in you. Hope you can take my words in a positive way and try to understand. All the best.

I think the tour guide even had a problem with Varun making the video and being loud while recording his commentary which actually is disturbing and distracting to others, one could easily make out that the family sitting alongside Varun were not feeling comfortable by his recording and all. But yes, the guide should hve not treated him like that, he should hve simply said he couldn't do anything abt it and felt sorry for it. And in any case so much bashing of Kevin from all was not required.

When in Rome… What else would you expect from local tour guides? To adapt to every tourist’s ears? You’re in a developed nation that is very individualistic 😎. They won’t bend over backwards because you’re a tourist. It demands your acceptance and your adjustment to their ways, not their adjustment to yours. At the end of the day that chap works for money, he wouldn’t give two hoots about sentiments of showing his city to a tourist! This unfortunately is the bitter pill to swallow in every developed nation.

I have many Chinese friends their accents are thicker, sometimes you are not able to understand a single word they say. But you need to focus and understand how these people talk. There is no right and wrong in certain cases, like these.. That person wasn't rude.. He just said if he would be slow, he would miss some important points and landmarks (something like that).. Plus like Rohit said, he did approach him back but our guy was too offended.. I know different people have different accents but you can speak a bit slowly without changing your accent. I myself don't have problem understanding English. But if I'm paying for a service and if I have any inconveniences I'll definitely ask for a change. Even in America less than 70% people have English as their native language. Considering this was a tour bus for people coming around the world would you make jokes on that ? When I first time landed in Chicago my taxi driver was Chinese and i didn't understand a single word he said what should i do in such situation? Respect Chinese culture and not understand what the man said ?? Guide was loud spoken and his personality is such. He didn’t mean anything bad. He went into defensive mode when he was corrected in front of all customers. Maybe going close to him and requesting to him to lower the speed of speaking might have been better. There is history of Abuse to African Americans in past, so they tend to go on defensive or protection mode. I apologize on behalf of New York and Kevin. Thank you 🙏 for lovely vlog... If you thought you were polite, you need to learn a lot....The way you requested him to slow down sounded like you're entitled to everyone's service...Even to my Anglicised Indian ears, it didn't sound right....And then you went on to ask the Mexican what he'll do in Staten Island..... Extremely nosy and I could make out the look of bewilderment on his face...Stop throwing your weight around for heaven's sake! The tour guide here replied to you...Had this been in Paris, they wouldn't even bother noticing someone who has such bearings....I would have personally approached him, made friends and said something like..."hi, I believe I missed what you said about that building over there" ... then when he replied, I would say, "thanks buddy.....I'm trying to catch up with the accents, you know, but not quite there...." And then smiled in a friendly way....Instead of telling him how he ought to deliver his tour in front of other passengers. To the Mexican if I wanted to start a conversation, I would say..." Are you sightseeing like me by any chance or on business?" Again with a smile....Instead of bluntly asking why he's headed where he is.....Get your bearings man before blaming and throwing tantrums.

Don't say yep! Say yes please :) I know you are from India but in USA people strongly believes in Bhartiya Sanskar and Sanskruti, it means you will just have to mind your manners. You can sure request him to speak slowly, (Sitting and yelling "Can you please speak slowly? I am not able to understand!" it bit aggressive by US standards) Just stand up and approach him gently with smile and speak slow and use phrases like "would you please" or "Sir is it possible for your to" You sure can't force him to speak slowly, if he is not comfortable doing it he won''t. Some time you can argue and try to bully them but it can backfire. So just need to be careful.

Thing is ,he asked that to a TOURguide, not to an ordinary citizen. He paid for the tour, so he could ask that. The TOURguide should have had the maturity to know that tourists from other parts of the world may not have their ""STANDARDS OF MANNERISM"". Many a times tourists who come to india also laugh on indian accents and mannerisms. But indian tourguides never speak to them so irresponsibly or arrogantly. Understand the point ,that he asked so from the TOURguide ,not an ordinary citizen. He paid for the service and he had the right to ask . Furthermore, the TOURguide proceeded to mock him and insult him. That is not something expected from a tourguide for just asking to slow down his speech. It is imminent for the TOURguide to know that tourists from other parts of world may not even be accustomed to their accents ,forget in fast pace. On top of it to insult the tourist is a very unwelcoming act. And grow a sense of self esteem instead of expecting an indian to act like a coward cow tow noob.

The locals called him Paki and asked to shut up and respect others. Friend got offended and accused racism, discrimination and all. The word per se is racist but he asked for it. Whether its our schools, family setup or society we are never taught and if taught don't want to learn manners, respecting others or follow etiquettes. We think we are superior and know all. And when get corrected we complain racism rudeness discrimination.

To everyone who is saying that varun was rude or he can't expect him to be slow. See he just requested and lets say if his point was invalid, the guide could have said "sorry i can't do it. This is the way i speak". But what he did is he started mocking him. He said few words in slower tone and made fun of him that was humiliating. He is a customer of big bus and he is supposed to get a decent reply. Also he might have edited some other part as well so that its not uncomfortable fir viewers. Some people are even making fun of him that he is freeloader pls if u don't like him. Don't watch his videos thats it. U don't know how he give gifts to his couch surfers. He's having his own way to thank. Do u know why he does budget traveling even though he can afford luxury travel? Its because of us. Every middlecalss person dream of going to foreign but because of lack of guidance and fear he often stop himself. Varun is trying to guide them. If you face such a situation next time on these buses, simply hop off the bus at your next stop and hop on the next incoming bus, eventhough you might have to wait for 15 - 20 mins. Better than sitting on a bus and not able to appreciate the information and getting the constant beam of negative energy from an unprofessional guide. And if understanding an accent is difficult ,choose the pre-recorded guided tours which have commentary pre-recorded than the Live commentary guided tours. Usually the pre recorded ones have a neutral accent and often speak slow for the general public to comprehend. Happy travelling!:)

Tho m not saying the guide to is 100% clean, he was also looking for some heat. Idk why he was doing that but the guide was a bit disrespectful towards him or it maybe his humor, FYI newyorkers have a different kinda sense of humor. And also the vlogger doesn't have any chill. They just guide you about the city with the pace of the running bus, and of course they will have their local English accent. Most of the tourist do not complain about how they speak! They just look around the sights to see and understand some things! I have taken Hop on hop off buses in Paris, Rome and London. It did not bother me if I did not understand some things or the other.
