New York 1911 | MoMA FILM
This documentary travelogue of New York City in 1911 was made by a team of cameramen with the Swedish company Svenska Biografteatern, who were sent around the world to make pictures of well-known places.
Opening and closing with shots of the Statue of Liberty, the film also includes New York Harbor; Battery Park and the John Ericsson statue; the elevated railways at Bowery and Worth Streets; Broadway sights like Grace Church and Mark Cross; the Flatiron Building on Fifth Avenue; and Madison Avenue. Produced only three years before the outbreak of World War I, the everyday life of the city recorded here-street traffic, people going about their business-has a casual, almost pastoral quality that differs from the modernist perspective of later city-symphony films like Paul Strand and Charles Sheeler’s "Manhatta" (1921). Take note of the surprising and remarkably timeless expression of boredom exhibited by a young girl filmed as she was chauffeured along Broadway in the front seat of a convertible limousine.

Incredible footage. Thank you MoMA for not only restoring the film to its original splendor, but also for making it publically available. You are, and always have been, absolute titans of film preservation
This is just further proof that if you set up a tripod - anywhere, anytime - humans will always walk right into frame and stare blankly into the lens. Thanks +Museum of Modern Art - lovely film.
Very high quality reproduction. A great lookback into what NYC was like over 100 years ago.
So wonderful! Thank you, MoMA.
Absolutely wonderful!
Awesome, thanks MoMA!
Not one word and it was thrilling, thank you so much.
Quality work, and moving.
Really amazing video....thank you
Amazing!!!
Every time I see a MOMA film video I hope I get to hear Dave Kehr, this one was great regardless!
This is so fascinating! And the hats!
awesome! beautiful world.
Very nice restoration, MOMA!
Beautiful
I appreciate and adore the purity of this copy. The soiling via colorization and the dubbing of sound effects in other posts are the perpetration of a fraud.
It’s funny how back then people just crossed the street randomly anywhere they wanted... oh wait, people still do that !
Such a wonderful restoration, is this from the original camera negative?
honestly despite the clothing style, there are not that much difference, sure, there are more skyscraper today, but city looks pretty the same.
Me encanta!
Looks beautiful.
Good video
I love wondering if I’ve ever shared in the same steps as these fine folks when I lived in NYC.
When everything used to be black and white. And every single photo or film is valuable 💖
I find myself comparing it to Strand’s Manhatta film where he focused more on the buildings and how the people interacted with them. This is all about the people. Is it a single filme by one organization or person, or is this a compilation?
Who wants to go back in time?
WOW WOW WOW
i can't believe this was just 1000 years ago.

Uhh I think you mean 1007 years.
What is the name of the music used in this clip?
Wow. A time machine.
Amazing. Love how everyone dressed. And not many cars. And did you see an obese person? Me neither. Love NYC
Does anyone know what the ornate building is at 5:35?
Is this footage copyright free? Can I use it on my channel?
Challenge: find someone in this film without some kind of hat on their head (or in their hand). That has to be the biggest change over the past 100 years…
I hope this film can be re-scanned with a higher dynamic range? The shadows seem like they might have some more detail to spare?
Did they already had cameras with stability:/?
Back in those hat & celluloid collar days, when my long-gone grandma was 11...
Is this film copyrighted ?
❤
What kind of film making is this? Is it a docomentary?
Where are they all now...?
Everybody was slim back then :)
It’s sad to think a lot of these people are dead
Model T is brand new..
One year before the Titanic sank

When every male was business man.
how come everyone is dressed up in suits and ties?
What an awful time to be alive. Everyone looks so malnourished. Did they not know this is America? You gotta eat, people, and stop walking everywhere!
Doesn't that inky blackness look a tad suspicious ? It can only come from maximum opacity on film...ancient film? I think not. This has been diddled...digitally.
