I still love the R1 even with all its faults you claim it has! I am an old man that has ridden all my life and has owned even faster bikes, but the great thing about the R1 is exactly what you mention a few times, it can be ridden very comfortably around town, and is it a screaming beast when you twist the throttle! My old bikes with a lot of power were not smooth cruising around town. They idled at 2500 rpm still lopping from the radical cams! If you give them a little throttle they would jump like a jackrabbit and go almost out of control just cruising. This bike is smooth and very rideable at low rpm. That is what makes it a really great bike and hard to beat as an everyday bike. Amazing motorcycle! I am an old guy with a disintegrating spine and also have a bad back with a pinched nerve between L4 and L5, but I have a big enough belly to lean on the tank and take the pressure off my back! Fatten up to help your back on something like that! LOL! Take care and God bless you all! BE SAFE!

@John Smith More lift/duration on a set of camshafts over stock will cause overlap between your intake and exhaust valves. This means at idle the stages of combustion are counteracting each other. Raising the idle improves the smoothness, and on carbureted engines the lack of vacuum may even prevent the engine from running at all at low rpms.

@@texasjedi8680 a V8 has been synonymous in the car world as the optimal choice for 2 specific styles of car: big, burly, heavy american 5+ litre muscle cars (Mustang, Camaro, challenger), and exotic sports cars from Europe that's made for 1 single reason: decimate competition on the racetrack or to give the most pleasurable drives (Ferrari 458, jaguar f type, mercedes AMG series, BMW ///M). And v twins have the most similar heritage, mainly used for 2 different styles of motorcycle: big, burly, heavy american cruisers and tourers (Harley, Indian, Victory) and exotic bikes from Europe, built to destroy competition or be very enjoyable to ride (Ducati, KTM, Moto Guzzi). Whereas a crossplane is rare, only ever used in like, 4 bikes, and only famous in the R1. It doesn't have the heritage or tunability of a V2, nor has it been used as widely.

I really love the sportbikes like that; but even on my speed triple I am hurting after about an hour. Wrist injuries suck, they never quite go away.

As a preface, I own a modified 2006 zx10 and I love it. But I am so glad I have a Ninja 400 and an old Hornet 250 that share daily duties. The novelty of 200HP wears off when you can't sensibly do anything with it out on the road. To everyone going in on the bike giveaways, unless you're heading to the track often or are an experienced veteran, go for the smaller bikes. Winning this will be all kinds of thrills for sure, followed by the want for a more streetable machine. That speed triple would be my pick for sure if I wasn't on the other side of the world.
