Amazing. The difference is really quite clear from my own paints. I love watching videos like these since they always bring back the excitement I felt when I first discovered watercolors. :)

Haha.....no, I ain't an old timer in this art. Just started like...hmm....8 months ago. My paints are for students and definitely not for professionals since they have a lot of filler in them and thus I'm resulted in using quite a lot of it to get the color I want. Thanks for replying! :)

I love my student-grade Winsor and Newtons (Cotman) and my student grade Schmincke (Akademie) set is my fave! So don't let the fact that you don't yet have pro ones put you off!

"your never use the white" yeah... that's something I call bullshit XD the white is what I use the most!

Hi Neko, I guess it depends on an artist's style :) How do you use yours? Like Randi said, it can be used thickly like gouache for highlights (although I find it dries more transparent than actual gouache) and sometimes you can make some nice muted pastel shades with it. I do agree with artists when they say you don't need to use it though (especially when painting in a traditional sense) because the paper is left as the white. Plus, I prefer to make pastel shades by using the colours in a transparent, diluted way rather than by adding white. Look forward to hearing your ideas for white watercolour! :)

Beret Nice I use white on lightening the color up instead of watering, because I feel like I have more control over the paint like that rather than having it going everywhere... also when I want a cool effect on certain areas of the painting I lay down white watercolor instead of just water, I think it looks way cooler and it blends nicely...

Yes, the case is supposed to bend down further, it wont break. Just bent it with your hands. I did it to mine and it didn't break.

Your Schmincke looks like the professional artist grade tins that are equivalent to Artist grade Winser & Newton. I use both.

I don't think there is something wrong with the tin. The set is meant to be used while having it in your hand (because of the ring on the back) and it means that though water will escape but at least down, through the little hole in the centre, not touching your pans

Thanks for the explanation, that sounds really good, and I agree that there probably isn't anything wrong with the tin - although I don't recall seeing a little hole in the centre... Either way, I tend to use my larger kits indoors so it won't be a problem as I can balance it to my liking :)

Your tin is not broken. The newer design remains flat so water/mixes don't run off as easy. Takes a few times but you'll find its a bit nicer this way. Enjoy...nice deal you found!

Thanks Donna! That's interesting to know about newer designs. However my concern is that it doesn't sit flat enough though - the water would run the other way down towards the hinges which would be a problem. So far I've just used the palette in the lid. I'm hoping over time the other side might lower enough to be flat :)

Hi Beret! Yes, after i looked again I did see yours is very much at an angle. I would gently try to bend it down a little at a time. Don't know what you did with the Chinese white, but Chinese colors are similar to gouache. I saw you had white gouache in another kit. The chinese white might do for that.

+Randi Command You're quite right, it's well worth using thickly like gouache! I will keep it in my palette for sure until I fill it with other colours :)

I have this set and the mixing palette drops in the other direction but it doesn't sit flat. I prop it up a bit on whatever is to hand. However, I wonder if these sets are 'seconds' (hence the bargain price) and didn't quite make the quality control checks as some of my paints weren't cut off cleanly when I opened them and looked a bit tatty. Also, two of them had their paper wraps but no cellophane.

Oh no, that sounds unfortunate! The thought did cross my mind, but I still think it's a great deal. I don't mind too much that the palette sits funny because, like you say, we can prop it how we want when using at home.

Professional are more pigmented, and more lightfast. But Cotman are really nice student grade paints :)

How is the set only 30? It's much more expensive on their website isn't it?

I don't mind their emails. They do have a lot of sales, but there are often some "free postage" offers that help a lot to bring down costs, and they sometimes run competitions too. So I'd say it's worth signing up for the emails :)

I have the same tin and the second pull out tray does sit down a little more but still not fully...

I’m in Australia where everything is super expensive - I bought most of my stuff from Amazon or eBay. I recently found the 24 W&N Pro set on a clearance website for $119 delivered which is about $200 cheaper than buying it here.

+TheEternalDammed I would have to agree with you, the colour selection isn't amazing, but as a starter set at the cheap price I got it it was too good to resist! At least we can add more to suit. I would recommend White Nights - see my latest vid for a peek at them. Lovely selection! :)

I'm not sure free2danz - but this particular offer probably isn't available at that low price any more as it was a weekend-only offer via email. If you can't buy from Cass At then you might have some luck with eBay. On the UK site I searched "Winsor & Newton NEW Artist Quality Watercolour Metal Box + 18 Half Pans" and found a few (more money though). You might be better off checking out your local art shops for deals, or even somewhere like Michaels if they do W&N?
