If the school provides the uniform, they should be allowed to wear them. If the uniform is decent enough for the girls to dance in front of whoever shows up in the audience of whatever they are cheering for, it's decent enough to wear in a classroom with their peers.

Schools provide leotards to gymnastics team members. Swim and diving team members are provided swimsuits or speedos. So they should get to wear them to class? The team can wear the uniforms to games and competitions. Different things are appropriate in different contexts.

Really? The school has been allowing short skirts for years and now its a problem? Get a grip! Cheerleaders wear spanks under the uniform. Y'all are crazy. Let these girls enjoy high school. Find a real problem like tutoring the kids who need it. Or bullying.

They CAN wear them at the games. Swimmers don't wear their swimsuits in class. The volleyball girls don't wear the tiny volleyball shorts in class. It's really not that shocking that they aren't allowed to wear them in class. If it's really about "school spirit" let them wear the top with pants.

I don't feel like the skirts need to be that short though. I was a cheerleader and ours were not that short (about mid thigh). One school didn't care if we wore the uniform to school and the other school I attended has us wear warmups.

dnp713 cheerleaders don't have to wear their uniforms outside of the game, hence this new uniform policy which is trying to enforce that. I don't think anyone here is defending the length of the skirts. And if you're saying that any old pervert can buy admission to a football game, that is also true of volleyball, swimming, gymnastics, and any other sport. At my school we were NOT allowed to wear our cheer uniforms outside of games and school.

If the school "determines that a certain outfit is not appropriate" then why did that school decide to have students wear that outfit as a uniform?

I mean I get it because even my school cheer skirt was short...So we could wear the skirt but had to had leggings but on some days we just wore the top with jeans

Why not just wear warmers underneath the skirt, and a jacket while in class??? It's not that hard. Besides that, its hard to stunt and tumble wearing a long ass skirt. Got nothing to do with wanting to look "skimpy".

Hard-er to stunt. But not tumble. You can tumble in a skirt that hits your ankles if you know what your doing. Stunts are a little harder but it can be done. If the dress code says knee length for shorts and skirts then the cheerleaders need to follow the dress code(in class only. they do need practical uniform for games and stunts). We had to wear warmup bottoms to school on game day. So I don't feel sorry for these girls. School rules-follow them.

I'm a cheerleader and that's what we do. we wear jeans under our skirt and our cheer jackets over our tops

this is why kids say school sucks, if they are excelling in school and life why hold them back.!!!

not every squad gets warm-ups... my cheerleading team (at school) already costs about $1,000 a year and we don't get warm-ups because they are really expensive and the school doesn't pay for any of it

The fact that it's a cute skirt and they want to wear it isn't the problem here , it's the fact that they're not allowing them to wear uniforms that they payed for to support their schools sports teams

Because uniforms have been getting shorter and shorter, shocker up until recently shirts were (just barely) finger tip length and not body hugging with a slit in the front of one leg. I know styles change but at some point the school is allowed to push back, it would have been better to push the dress code rules before the team bought the uniforms.

Best thing would have been to order uniforms that complied with the dress code in the first place. I'm surprised that the principal or superintendent didn't get involved in the ordering process and approve them before they were purchased.

we are not allowed to wear our uniforms during the school day

When I was in school, I always wished the cheerleaders wouldn't be exempt from dress codes. They would wear their uniforms which would show their stomachs, shoulders, thighs, and butt. But I was dress coded for wearing a long sleeved black shirt in 90 degree weather just because it had a tank top underneath it. Now that I'm an adult, it doesn't really matter to me anymore, but I still think it's slightly unfair cheerleaders usually aren't subjected to school dress codes. Abolish dress codes entirely and that'll fix everything.

The cheerleaders would wear black tights under their uniforms, during school. It wasnt distracting. Now the teachers around halloween time would get inappropriate. Weird double standards

They aren’t banning them for games. And being a volleyball player for about 5 years now, Iv never heard of a school letting it’s volleyball players wear their volleyball shorts except to a pep rally.

I remember when I was in high school, student complaints about cheerleader uniforms purposely being made shorter than the rules allowed for skirts and dresses were met with the faculty basically saying "the uniforms are fine. Shut up about it". I'm not sure that's any better than this situation

Simple enough geeeeeeeeesh. Wear matching color (contoured) sweat pants while in class and pull them off in 3 seconds time when ready to take off.

The cheerleaders in our school wear matching t shirts and jeans and wear the hairstyle and makeup for later that night.

I am so glad my school doesn't worry about the dress code much, a girl wore a strapless blouse once and no one said a thing.

In high school they provided us with cheer wind suits and we wore our uniform in pep rally and games . The best thing is wearing your uniforms to school .

This happened to me too. For class I had to wear my warmup suit under my uniform because the uniform was “a dress code violation.”

Our skirts were too short to wear to class so what we did instead was where our tops on game day with these like almost like warm-up pants that still did the school colors on them. It sucked during the hot months but we were in dress code

I graduated in 2009 but at my school they changed the dress code back then. The cheerleaders could wear their uniform if they have warm ups underneath the skirt or the top shell with warm up pants and no skirt. They said the skirt was too short for school and violated the schools short and skirt policy

The uniforms the cheerleaders wore at my school were too short for the dress code, too. But although teachers vehemently enforced the short skirt rule for regular students, the cheerleaders were never given any criticism at my school. Glad silly high school probz are far behind me. lol.

obviously they should be allowed to wear their school uniforms, but at that moment if there was in issue, they should've provided a t-shirt or something so they could still participate

who cares if there are "perverts"? If the girls feel safe in their uniforms and want to wear it, there shouldn't be a problem. It isn't there fault that some people can't control themselves.

My school was like that too. We still wore our uniforms but we just had to wear our warmup pants instead of the skirts. It makes literally not sense that we could wear them for football games but not in class

I've used to looked under their Cheerleader skirts back in the day in the 2000's as a Pervy Teen High School.

If the length of someone’s skirt distracts you... that’s your problem, not theirs

the uniforms are perfectly fine they cover everything soooo its ok and so what cheerleaders would be VERY embarresed if they had to were long skirts the short skirts make them feel confident leave them the way they are

So I understand that they can still wear them to games. Different things are appropriate for different circumstances. I do not think any athletic uniform is appropriate for class. Schools have gymnastics teams, but I'm sure most would agree that the school-provided leotards are not appropriate for class. Is the school-provided swimsuit or speedo for swim/diving teams appropriate for class? Those are uniforms. This is not any different. My school didn't allow uniforms for for any team during class. We wore our team jackets and team tshirts and the cheer team wore their shirt, jacket, and bow. Everyone still knew they were the cheer team, they still knew we were the dance team, they knew who the football players were, etc. No one complained.

At my school, our skirts are pretty short too, but we don’t really have a dress code. As long as the outfit someone wears isn’t *explicitly* inappropriate, there’s no problem

If it is inappropriate for class then it should be inappropriate at the school function. If it is ok at one then it needs to be ok for both. Keep in mind that this is a school approved uniform. Either it is approved everywhere or no where.

How can the uniform be fine on the field but in class its wrong?the same kids see them in class and on the field!!!

The best way to avoid those problems as going into classroom is to put on your your sweat suit or your jogging suit as a cheerleader either over or under your skirt

My friend wears a short skirt in cheer. Her coach tells her to wear short, tight skirts because it helps her and her cheer friends keep her legs tight and together when doing tumbling and stunting because she is a flyer!

This is ridiculous! I wore my drill team uniform in class on game days and so did the cheerleaders and our skirts were just as short. Our school is rich in tradition though. The girls have on spanx underneath. The girls are not doing splits and jumps while in school, they are just walking and sitting.

I hate everyone saying, oh the school supplies the uniform they should be aloud to wear it. Um hello have you never heard of volleyball? None of us are ever aloud to wear our uniforms because volleyball shorts aren’t school appropriate even though the school supplies them. So my heart doesn’t break for these cheerleaders not being able to wear their skirts. Wear the shell with different bottoms like us volleyball players have had to every game day since the beginning.

At my school something happened where you couldn’t wear your Cross country uniforms because the shorts weren’t mid-thigh. And the shirt showed shoulders. I thought it was stupid.

That's the first time I heard that problem. If it's that big of an issue make them wear Capri leggings underneath and then when they play their game they take them off

We don't wear our uniforms to school, but it really doesn't bother me because I wouldn't be comfortable wearing something like that to class. Y'all gotta think about bookbags too, because the bookbag would literally hike the skirt up all the way. On Fridays, we have other game day apparel to wear like, jerseys, athletic t-shirts with nike leggings and slides or any shoe we want.

In my school the cheer leaders have to wear leggings and their cheer jacket during school while wearing the uniform and when they actually start to cheer then they can wear their normal cheer outfit

I can understand both sides, but leaning to agree w the new policy more BECAUSE, EX: even though the black spandex shorts are worn for playing volleyball you shouldn't be wearing them to school as any regular daily wear because they are simply just too short.

I live in Pinellas Co. I feel this issue should go to the School Board. Why should ONE SCHOOL be affected, when ALL the schools have similar, or worse, uniforms. What about the track teams? They wear those shirt 70’s style shorts that show their underwear at times? Track doesn’t wear bloomers over underwear like cheer does. How is cheer worse? What about theater? Football? Baseball? Color Guard? Volunteers who work outside all day? Are you going to make ALL school organizations/supporters abide by the “dress code” rules, when it will affect their performance or artistic value? What about the fans who show up to these events? Huh? Gonna deny their purchased tickets, because their attire doesn’t meet the rules for appropriate dress on SCHOOL GROUNDS?! This isn’t the only place in the country where this fight against cheerleaders is happening. It’s ridiculous and unnecessary. If the organization’s sponsor and administration approved of placing the order for the attire, (which they have to do), it should be allowed.

Ehh. My daughter is a Varsity cheerleader also. We have an even more strict dress code that doesn’t allow bare shoulders etc. On game day, they were a super cute spirit shirt and jeans. Still school colors. They get plenty of time in their uniform and it’s just no big deal. Besides, wearing it all day before the long night, you might get something on it anyway.
