They call it a "draw through" setup... You can also run a carb after the turbo instead ("blow through" setup), which is better, but as said above, the carb needs a few mods, or needs to be placed in a sealed box (basically the pressure inside the bowls needs to build with boost pressure, or it's gonna... well... work "backwards")

  • @1Longranger

    @1Longranger

    3 жыл бұрын

    Back in the 80's I had few draw through turbo/carb set ups. The intake piping was all solid aluminium. What happen is that when the manifold is under high vacuum the turbo impellor is almost freespooling (it isn't drawing much air, which takes energy). That results in higher turbo shaft rpm's. Works well with the side benefit of charge cooling. Primitive, but it worked. I also ran a 30% water/methanol injection upstream of the carb. This does cause impellor leading edge erosion over time though.

    You should use a dual carb induction setup, it will give you more flow into the turbo and allow for a little smaller jet size between the two(compared to just one carb) to increase fuel atomization. Also if it has a blow off valve try using a stronger spring to allow more boost.

    @@welloffthepace3127 Because most carbs run with atmospheric pressure so they don't work properly when you give them boost. You can tune one for a higher pressure than one bar, but that isn't helpful when the boost is varying a lot like on a turbo. For that application you need either a pressurised diaphragm carburettor (which is considered an early fuel injection system), or proper fuel injection either mechanical or electronic. The diaphragm-based carburettor is used on many WWII aircraft with superchargers.

  • @mac24seven

    Well, I was expecting a little more but hey, it's still awesome. It needs more than 3lb of boost tho. Issue is, they have a giant turbo on an engine that doesn't Rev. They need a little dinky turbo that flattens out at like 4k rpm. Then it'd spool faster and would have so much more lower end. It'd be better overall.

    On one hand, the turbo can take damage when it's working with air-fuel mixture (which is why the carb ist mostly between turbo and intake), but the carb itself works better when it has normal atmospheric pressure outside und the turbo sucks the air through it instead of pushing it through the carb. The way the guys made it, the carb is going to work pretty well, but the turbo will suffer. That's why there are so few cars with carb and turbo

    No need for an intercooler with a carb - the fuel evaporative cooling takes care of that. But you are probable getting carburetor iceing because you have the carb in front of the turbo. Best to either get a specialist blow through carb, or build a sealed box (+ high pressure fuel pump) so you can blow through the carb that will help solve the iceing problem.

    Now make a 4 way joystick that actuates four single piston cylinders (use a master from a hydraulic clutch - 2002 Accent for example) in an X formation and connect it to a X and Y axis pivoting joystick with pushrods to press into each master, oriented centrally so that each corner of the X points to the wheels LF, RF, RR, LR starting at top left and going clockwise. Connect the other end respectively to each corner of the car's brakes with brake lines - 4 way selective brakes ;)
