The Toyota Urban Cruiser is the latest offspring from the global marriage of Toyota and Suzuki.
Recently we reviewed the newly launched Suzuki Vitara Brezza (watch that video here) and for our video team this was a serious case of deja vu. The reality is that the Urban Cruiser is identical except for a revised grille and front bumper, and of course the badge on the nose.
In this detailed review, we take a thorough look at the new Urban Cruiser and try and answer the toughest question of all, should you buy this or the equivalent Suzuki Vitara Brezza?

Most of their drivetrains have Toyota technology ala VVTi engines, some of their vehicles use complete Toyota drivetrains so from Toyota's perspective guaranteed bullet proof reliability which is what the brand was built on and no risk.Japanese quality is on another level...

Well interestingly Suzuki has gained the popular Rav 4 among other models from Toyota so its a good partnership and Toyota did not have similar vehicles, the Etios could never compete with the polo the same way the Toyota Starlet can, or the Ford Ecosport the way this Urban Cruiser can and with suzuki they don't have anything the size of the Rav 4 so it helps to gain that

@@labourlawact7826 it looks like buyers are buying more Toyota Starlets than Suzuki Balenos, the same might happen here because of dealer network, Suzuki is a very reliable brand, yes parts might be a bit pricey sometimes, but so are Toyota parts sometimes, that's the problems we face with new cars
Thanks Alan! Have mine and happy with it, on both road and dirt. Yes the 4 gear box isn’t ideal, but don’t buy it for a high performing car. Ticks all other boxes

Looks a really good vehicle but sadly as well as the Breza not available here in the UK. Great review thanks.
When are we seeing a little Toyota Jimny? That'll be cute😊
I was waiting for this review😍😍🥰🥰
It was a good move for Suzuki to form a partnership with Toyota, Suzuki is reliable as a brand as well, The Urban Cruiser is great value for money in my opinion. It is a solid product and great fuel consumption, I wouldn't mind owning one as well .
I've been waiting for this one.
Good to have this as my first car! Wish to have one. Tanzania
Quick question, does the XS Automatic Urban Cruiser have the changing colour dash dial, and folding side mirrors?
I also prefer the look of the Urban Cruiser... the less chrome the better.
Great little SUV, here in Indonesia, we have Toyota Raize which sits in the same segment.
hallo will you review this urban cruiser head to head with nissan magnite need to see which is best value for money .
"Isn't an Urban Cruiser a man who wears a coat & isn't allowed within 100yards of a primary school?" - Jeremy Clarkson 😂 "...what a stupid car because you'll just end up getting arrested doing the school run" 🤣 He said something like that. I literally just watched an old 2009ish Top Gear episode today where they talked about releasing this car WAY back then😅 over a decade from that episode & now that car is here 😄
Thank you for that!
Like everything about this car, only wished that they had a turbo diesel option, but that would have probably increased the price almost to the ford ecosport 1.5 model.
I have been waiting for this video....

Wonder if there is a 4WD manual transmission of the Urban Cruiser. Auto transmission can be a bore at times
I see the Jimny having a Toyota badge in the future.
i think the back seats are fine in terms of space. the adults that ride with me usually only have are two foot and two handed.
I also prefer the Urban Cruiser.. front looks better than the Vitara Brezza ( still love Suzuki though).. your comment about Joburg roads are so funny! Great job on the car review, thanks
The Toyota will have a better resale value for sure ( ya ya I know it's the same thing ). The Starlet outsells the Baleno by almost 20 to one in SA so expect a similar story with this battle. Suzuki is such an underrated brand in SA which is a pity as they make great cars in the small/budget segment but people overlook them as they think it's some funny asian brand etc.

Suzuki will have to work hard. Their vehicles are improving all the time. Way better than any Korean or Chinese car.
Can you do a review on the Kia sonet? Surely it’s in the same category than this?
My mom said she likes it and I'm considering getting one for her but my biggest concerns are that it only has 2 airbags (from both manufacturers even though if I remember correctly Toyota initially offered the Starlet with more airbags than the Baleno) and that wind noise comment has me thinking I should drive it myself first before seeing if its a big issue.
I so enjoyed your review. eeeek you have made my decision MUCH more difficult. What I WANT is a Jiminy. What I need is a good solid reliable run-around that my husband can also drive that has great fuel economy. My sister recently got a Suzuki Espresso which she loves but my husband is not comfortable in that. So I'm hoping you also did a review on the Suzuki :-).
If you bought a Suzuki version, do you know if you can service it under service plan at a Toyota dealer?
I expect that with records sales Suzuki had the last few years that their dealership number will soon increase.
Needing some gravel road testing on th8s vehicle as i am in town but have to drive on short gravel roads
I bought a Toyota Starlet rather than this vehicle. I very happy with the Starlet choice . Especially Features, economy and comfort for the price. I get 18.5km per liter... 😁
Hi . Stiil I've doubt on this cruiser, kindly clear my doubt.. Does toyota manufacturing this engine or just change the suzuki logo with same engine?
I wonder if you could now take your same Suzuki to a Toyota dealership for a service, no difference to the engine etc.
is this car going to be sold in the uk i hope so
Between this one and a hyundai venue ... which one you would recommend
The challenge is half of those 60 Suzuki dealers don't provide servicing. I live within a 5 km radius of two Suzuki dealers, yet I have to take my (new) car to Honda for a service. For this reason alone I would chose a Toyota option vs the Suzuki.

Thats a very interesting and noteworthy point if one is looking to buy. Thank you
Will a Toyota dealership service my Brezza if there isn't a Suzuki dealership nearby?
Just bought an Urban Cruiser today. The Extended warranty - 8 years, unlimited km = R5 850-00 including VAT. Suzuki Brezza Vitara is much better value for money, but were I live there is nou Suzuki dealers within 250km radius witch can make life complicated.
I'm torn between this and the Starlet for a little family car, which would be your pic between the two XR derivatives?

Comparing the two on paper the Starlet looks to be a better package; with more airbags, better performance (being 200kg lighter and lower), space for taller people in the back, VSC and Brake Assist. Not to mention it is cheaper. As for looks the Urban Cruiser looks like a fatter brother of the S-Presso whereas the Starlet looks more like a proper sedan, so that's where I'd put my money. Would like to hear the opinion of @cars.co.za though
Please do a review on the new Kia Sonet

I test drove the Suzuki vitara brezza auto.... And yes the car has all the bells and whistles at a great price, I wasn't impressed with the power and long gears.... Coming from a fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost auto, I couldn't bring myself to purchase the Suzuki and went I got the new fiesta. I found that the Suzuki sounds like it's stuck in second gear for too long and struggling to get to the next gear. But that's my opinion.

I have read automotive mags. most of my life and have seen the automotive industry go through many changes over 5 decades todays offerings are the most tec forward reliable longest lasting best performing vehicles ever built before across the board it is true still some are better then others we are living at a time also of great change headed into the future as to which system will win as our relied upon source of energy I don't believe batteries are the overall solution no matter how much they advance I do know people would find the most suitable answer in the free market if government doesn't have it's thumb on the scale

Lovely car to drive on the freeway. However, it sort of struggles to gather enough power and speed while overtaking, so overtaking may take a bit longer than 'normal'.
LED headlights should be placed under the "Safety Features" category because it makes a massive difference to night driving vs halogen and hence your safety. With that in mind, I believe the base Suzuki does not come with LED headlights. So if you are looking for the base spec, Toyota is better in my opinion. Doesn't matter in higher specs but I have found Toyota aftersales to be the best. And speaking about Safety, it only has two airbags. That is kind of ridiculous when you think the price is over R300k on the higher spec models.
