    The very sharp buddy of mine who got me into 4-wheeling (in a Toyota FJ-40) 35 years ago gave me some very useful advice-- never forget that 4WD is a wonderful convenience that allows you to get stuck a much farther walk from home! The customers in your videos never cease to amaze me with their attitudes -- undoubtedly caused in part by advertising-- that just having 4WD will allow you to go anywhere. I'm equally surprised at their lack of self-rescue gear-- particularly a High-Lift jack, IMHO the most useful device any offroad vehicle can carry. I guess that gives you plenty of business.

My trucks half way through it's 5yr loan, zero damage other than a windshield chip (highway related) and insurance will fix for free. But maybe I'm in the minority since I grew up offroading in 115+ where you can NOT get stuck or you're in deep lol

It really does. Wear your mask, people. Learn from my awesome girlfriend. 3) Hell yeah I didn't know what I was doing. Did you see what I did with a 2020 4runner? I read the comments saying to lock the rear diff... I wish I knew how - I had no service to youtube it! But yeah I'm dumb driver with no off-roading experience whatsoever! All in all I had a tremendous amount of fun, and I'd gladly get stuck again! I really appreciate it, Matt. Keep doing what you guys do!

    If you don't get stuck from time to time, you are not using it correctly. Ignore the trolls / "experts". Mosts of them forget they know not to do that, because they did that (or worse). When I first got my FJ cruiser, took me a lot of experimenting to figure out what all the buttons did and when to use them. It also took me time to figure out what modification I needed to make to not get stuck in various situations, and which ones were the biggest bang for the buck (i.e. tires, lift, skid plate). If you don't push the limits, you will never know what they are.

  • @cenccenc946

    @cenccenc946

    3 жыл бұрын

    FYI, you did the exact right thing. You went out and tested it. You hit your limit. Recognized that, and called for help. The alternative was getting in over head, refusing to acknowledge it, and rolling your new truck while possibly killing or injuring someone. you had a fun adventure, and no one got hurt. Mission accomplished. So, all the critics need to get off your back.

    A fun and useful thing to do is to rig a winch onto a hitch ball mount. Run very heavy 12v wiring (wi/circuit breaker) and put in heavy plug/socket. Slap it in and pull yourself out! Bury a spare tire if no trees are available. ALWAYS have water, HiLift jack, and good shovel when desert off roading. But then Matt wouldn't have anything to do! 😁

    I have a suggestion to cool your radiator, pick up one of those two gallon garden sprayers. I have one that I used to wash my car and my mountain bike, and it's great. Cost less than twenty bucks and doesn't take up too much room in the back. You have wide spray to cool down the radiator. Also, I love all these Toyota rescues you do, haha. I have a Toyota, and also love Jeeps, but a lot of the Jeep hate from the Toyota guys is insufferable. I love that you keep them humble!

    Matt- IDEA: Install several driver controlled water misters in front of the radiator so you can cool on the fly… You know, water reservoir, small 12v pump, plastic tubing zip tied in place. You could even make the washer fluid reservoir dual purpose… In the summer, plain water won’t freeze. Lol Easy to jury rig. Remove the ugly front stuff in the 2/3rds the year it is not needed. I expect it has been done before somewhere. Cheaper than a bigger more capable radiator!

Cases of what? Beer? Peanut butter? Listen closely to what you hear. "50 more deaths" Okay, deaths caused by what? Car accidents? Swallowing Lego's? Old age? The flu? Most of the people reporting this stuff are not doctors or scientists. They are reporters reporting what they are told to report. Fear = Control. I bought a 1999 Wrangler Sport with NOTHING in it in Pennsylvania, the only model I could afford. I didn't do much off-roading. After I moved to California, I got serious about upgrading it and added everything on it myself. Had a great time building my Jeep from the ground up. The first 4th of July in SoCal, my wife and I decided to hike one of the highest peaks in Orange County. There was a 4x4 road that lead to the trailhead. I got 100 or so yards into the trail and decided that my skills did not match the road, so we parked and hiked the extra 1 1/2 miles to the trailhead. After the hike, we were heading back down the road to my Jeep when we saw a brand new Range Rover on its side in the middle of the road. He had tried to back down hill and off to the side to let another 4x4 by (doesn't uphill have right of way?) and rolled up on a bank and tipped. He asked for help. He said that the vehicle was so new that he had not yet watched the recover video that had been provided with the vehicle. Not knowing anything about vehicle recovery or the structure of a Range Rover, I declined, other than offering to drive to the nearest State Forest Ranger station and report the problem. No idea how that got resolved. I know the vehicle must have been recovered as when I felt my skill set was sufficient, my wife and I did drive that ridge in OC from one end to the other.

    Probably never read the manual. It is pretty neat how it slowly wiggles its way out.

    Yeah, I'm betting that feature paired with locking the rear end would have likely gotten it out. I'm betting though that the owners haven't been off roading too much and either didn't think about it or were worried about ending up on the side or the roof. Even with cameras making angles and trails look flatter than they are, that still looked pretty steep haha.

    I knew a guy from Phoenix who liked to fish and hike offroad in the Arizona desert. He made a device to spray water on his radiator. He flipped a switch inside when it started getting too hot; a tank under the hood held the water and he rigged up a little electric pump and connected it to a series of spray nozzles in front of the radiator. He swore by it.

    The downside of going with the special TRD color, everyone knows when it's brand new because it changes every year. Looks great though.

    Hey Matt, a quick question for you: what are you running in your radiator? I’ve heard that distilled water has better heat transfer than the antifreeze does. Since you’re in a hot zone where the risk of freezing the lines is basically zero, it might help the xj through the summer, then you could fill it back up with the green engine coolant when fall comes. ... just a thought, but I’d love to know your take on it.

    Distilled water does cool better. But the boiling point is also low. Antifreeze lowers the freezing point and raises the boiling point of water, so while antifreeze doesn't cool as well, it raises the boiling point, which keeps the pressure from getting too high and preventing the pop off valve in the radiator cap from opening and blowing water everywhere. But instead of running a 50:50 mix you can run a 60:40 or 65:35 water tk antifreeze ration and add that hyperlube cooling system additive to make it cool even better.
