New TOD at Millbrae: Genuinely Good, or Just a Gimmick?

I always appreciate some good-quality transit-oriented development, but does the Gateway at Millbrae hold up? It's at a crucial point of the Bay Area's transit landscape and hopes to be a pioneer as far as TOD goes in the region.

Disagree on this. We should not let the perfect be the enemy of the good like we have for the last 40 years with housing production. Given the space and financial constraints this is a truly incredible piece of TOD. Yes, it's not perfect but absolutely no project ever will be. This makes excellent use of all the empty parking lots that were wedged between the _existing_ parking structure and that large stroad. Oh, and btw, literally the entire panorama of empty lots across the stroad is already slated to become more housing and office development. And there is a pedestrian walkway tucked under that overpass so it's all walkable without having to cross the stroad at all!

Disappointing or not, transit oriented development in the Bay is super encouraging to see

I feel like this Gateway development is a lot like the Millbrae station itself: already a great thing, but will be even better once the high speed rail line comes in

You nailed how I feel about this. Felt like this project is about 1/5 of it's potential.

I think this project could still do well. MIllbrae is nice enough. You stay connected to the city via bart for commuting but you get more suburban amenities.

I'm curious what you think about the TOD at MacArthur Station, which was an enormous parking lot when I lived at 36th & West St in the late-80s/early-90s

Until local (and all) governments get a handle on this, they can call it goldilocks unicorn housing as far as I can see. $3K studios is hardly "affordable" though it is certainly the going rate up the tracks in San Francisco. lol

It's impossible to lower housing prices if we have very little of it. We haven't been building housing for 40 years. Until we start producing the same housing numbers we had in the 40s and 50s, it will be expensive!
