If Seattle does get the Sonics back, they should also get their history back and it’s possible since both the city of Seattle and the Thunder own it. All history from 1967-2008 should be given back to Seattle and that includes their championship in 1979.

NBA teams on different continents is ridiculous. Not to mention there are too many teams with 30. The NBA talent pool is stretched too thin with the 30 teams, as it is.
@damageisdumb10 ай бұрын
I highly doubt that the NBA would make teams based in other continents like Europe or Asia because that means players from the US/Canada teams would literally need to travel an entire day just to get there. Unless they triple the size of the NBA and make entirely new conferences worldwide, I don't see it happening.

It would highly unlikely a new Seattle Team is called anything other than Supersonic or Sonics. Part the Settlement with the City of Seattle when Bennett relocated the team were that the name and colors could not be used in OKC but could be used by any future team in Seattle (though no guarantees any such team were made at the time). Team history would be "shared" though my understanding is Bennett would likely let it revert to Seattle as he does not really our history and would prefer a clean slate.

Expansion makes zero sense in the NBA right now. Too many horrible lousy teams as is currently. I'm a Golden Knights 11 game ice pack holder of the team in Vancouver buy the way. At least when the NHL expanded they had 32 competitive teams. If they expand they are just watering down their product.

I also remember that Hurricane Katrina had a big role in the Sonics moving to OKC. It showed that OKC was a city that could support an NBA franchise. Seattle will get an expansion team so, at least, we're getting another shot at the NBA.

@4reemotion2269 ай бұрын
I have a feeling they'll expand with 4 teams rather than just 2. If it's just 2 teams. Those two cities will definitely be Seattle and Las Vegas which are cities in the Western United States. You will have to take two western conference teams that reside in the middle of the U.S. and close to the Eastern portion of the country. The Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans, or Minnesota Timberwolves for example. But to keep teams in their respective conference and keep playoff rivalries alive it will take two more expansion teams to be placed in the Eastern side of the United States to hold the balance. On the same token. It wouldn't surprise me if the NBA expanded with 4 teams. Put each new team in a market where they can project success, ticket and merchandise sales, and then shake up the conferences a bit to make it all make sense. However it may be though. However it may turn out. I'm excited for it all and can't wait to see exactly what gets done and how. The NBA has stated as soon as the next T.V. and CBA deal gets all wrapped up that we'll have that discussion of expansion more seriously. We're right around the corner. Just don't take the conferences out of the league. Considering what this country is going through we need balance and even distribution.

@@introvertedblackgirl - I’m sure the few NBA games that are currently being played in Europe each season sell out. But I wouldn’t be so sure that a full season of games (41 homes game or thereabouts) would, and in such a scenario are the fans coming out to support the Paris/London (or whoever) team or the visiting team with the superstar player? If the NBA is to establish itself in Europe (or anywhere outside of North America) I would expect it to be a completely separate league - ie like the BAL in Africa. For a singular or even a few teams you would have major logistical concerns, travel times, Timezone changes, tv deal rights etc. In theory increasing the number of teams doesn’t improve things, you go from being a single flight for each team to potentially many, from one bad time slot to many. Establishing a full fledged league at NBA standards would also be difficult, for starters there is an existing and well established league in most countries, most existing stadiums aren’t close to NBA standards, etc, etc. A reverse scenario in Rugby League (UK’s Superleague) had a Toronto, Canada based team - for part of a season (in all fairness COVID helped ruin it), but between logistics, different sport/rules (relative to what Canada is used to), lack of local players etc it was bound to not work out. Although the Superleague does offer a world club challenge pitting the champion vs Australia’s NRL champion. But the advantage is both leagues play by the same (international standard) rules etc.

@@introvertedblackgirl the NBA is already considering reverting back to East/West for the All-Star game. Not sure if it will help, say a stat the other day suggesting that the past 12 years of All-NBA 1st team Guards are from the West. What I would like to see is a return of defence in general and in the all-star game. The NBA was wrong to push so many changes in favour of opening the offence up to hopefully get a few more highlight plays per game. The Mid 00s Pistons were so much fun, players like Kirilenko were exciting. Likewise I doubt the way they have set up the in-season tournament is going to create a great deal of excitement for fans or rivalries at least not in the short term. America doesn’t seem to understand Pool play and table format. Many sports leagues around the world will have a cup for the top of the table team at the end of the season and then go into a playoff to define the championship. What I would love to see (and I doubt players would ever agree), is that they would receive a bonus for accomplishments they achieve in the year they achieve it but no other (is remove super max - players get a bonus pay for making All-NBA, All Def, winning MVP - and these bonuses don’t impact team salary/salary cap - still minimum games played requirements etc). Would be an incentive for players to play and play harder. Hopefully leading to less rest/sit outs and teams not being penalised/crippled for players past play, plus a better product as everyone eligible for these bonuses.

I highly doubt that the NBA would make teams based in other continents like Europe or Asia because that means players from the US/Canada teams would literally need to travel an entire day just to get there. @@joshuadooley181 Absolutely! He was as guilty as anyone else. In retrospect, Steve Ballmer seems like he would have been the perfect buyer. Seattle is full of billionaires and the Sonics had 41 years of proof that we could support a team. It's such bad luck that Shultz sold the Sonics to an outsider with a very obvious agenda. I also remember that Hurricane Katrina had a big role in the Sonics moving to OKC. It showed that OKC was a city that could support an NBA franchise. Seattle will get an expansion team so, at least, we're getting another shot at the NBA.
I think the only way London getting a team would work is if, The team went on month long road trips and then a month long of teams traveling into London for a couple days to a week. NY to London is a 5-6 hour flight, LA to London is like a 9-10 hour flight.
Either of these cities could be options for at least 2 NBA Expansion Teams: Seattle, Las Vegas, Hawaii , Tampa Bay, San Diego, Kansas City, 2nd NBA Team in the Bay Area/3rd Team in Northern,California , 2nd Team in Arizona, 4th Team in Texas.

I would like to see one of course in Seattle, great basketball city, Mexico City, would help to globalize basketball even more especially in Latin America and then Vegas seems like inevitability. Another spot could be Rio in Brazil to expand the league. Travel to Mexico and Brazil wouldn’t be crazy as far as travel standpoint being in the same hemisphere.
I think a Team in New Mexico would be great. New Mexico does not have any pro teams and we have been wanting a pro sports team ever since the idea of moving the NO Saints to NM when Katrina hit has us grumbling
I don’t live in Seattle but they need a Team back ASAP! They seemed so Invested; and I loved watching GP; Kemp and KD. How would that work if they have a European Team? I’d love to see it especially with the International Players becoming some of the Faces of the League. I know they have private jets but flying that often would probably wouldn’t work. However; for the love of money they’d figure it out!

Expand to Seattle, Las Vegas, Vancouver and Pittsburgh, 3 new teams in the West-1 new team in the East, move Minnesota, Memphis, and New Orleans with expansion Pittsburgh to Eastern Conference…everyone is happy, all teams that lost there franchise get there former teams back (except 1970s Kansas City)…league would be perfectly balanced with east and west teams… all four of those cities are worth visiting, have a fan base, and attract tourism
London, Paris... China?.....smooth dude
I think they should bring back the Sonic’s bc you have to; then a Las Vegas team because I mean that’s just gonna happen at some point with how much money is there, slide the grizzlies and the timberwolves to the east as Memphis is a given and then can establish more of that Wisconsin vs Minnesota rivalry in another sport
