New Studio & Darkroom Tech - Large Format LIVE!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today on Large Format LIVE we're exploring two new pieces of technology making their way onto the market this Fall, the Printalyzer Densitometer from Dektronics and the Incident Meter from Reveni Labs. Both products are created by members of the film photography community, and we're going in-depth in the studio to see what they can do!

Matt at Reveni is great. I have several Reveni tools. His communication about orders and what’s coming next are great. His follow-up on improvements is really good too. Must be something about guys named Mat or Matt being super helpful!

Thanks for the vote of approval Jim! While I'd love that statistic to have some weight, with white males between the ages of 30 and 50, you've got a 50/50 chance of them being a Mat(t)!

About your audio: it has a hollow sound. This could be room echo caused by your voice bouncing off of the nearby backdrop because when you went to get the RZ67, the echo diminished. Rather than a lav microphone, try using a shotgun microphone suspended just out of frame and pointed toward your mouth. About your video: it is almost 1 stop overexposed. If you use a Macbeth Color Checker, you can adjust the video camera brightness so your highlights aren't blown out. Terry Thomas Director of Photography Atlanta, Georgia USA

great session Mat, but one piece of feedback, you are a little too hot (bright) in the shot, maybe take 1/3rd of a stop of exposure off the main camera, or try using a grey background, instead?

Mat at 20:10 some addendum to this, Linhof cameras can to, However it depends on the model of technika (1/2/3/5) the early 3 have 'spring' backs, as the takihara you have in the shot, Some have a replaceable ground glass panel (tech 5's), which has this grafflok feature installed to it, But some back styles CAN'T, like my 5x7" tech 3 version, it is fitted with a 5x7" PLATE back, which, like the Fujifilm 6x17 pano cameras has a hinged groundglass and a frame lock, a kind of grafflock bar at the top, and a ledge onto which the holder sits, a single metal dark slide, or in some 'old cameras' a Plate holder, which is simmilar in design to this style. MY camera has a 4x5" adaptor plate, but is spring back design too, and Can't hold polaroid backs, the hump which forms part of the light hinge section doesn't allow the groundglass to close the assembly tight to the camera frame.

I've already ordered this Reveni light meter (I have the Reveni's spotmeter already), mostly because I realized that I need more light than I have with my LED lamps in my little home studio and want to add some flashes, but I don't have a flashmeter yet, since I didn't need one so far. I think I will also find a use for the light temperatur reading. I'm still wondering about the densitometer, if it is of any use for me (use case: I do 11X14 b&w reverse paper positives, scan them and want to reproduce them as perfectly as possible on an Epson P700 witch is filled with 8 different shades of carbon graphite ink plus matte black and clear ink), and I'm wondering if the densitometer can somehow be of assistance doing it. Right now, it's a lot of trial and error for me, with my eyes as the sensor. Another problem with this densitometer is, that its reach is quite short, so I can't measure the center of my 11x14 pics. I wonder if there is no possibility to attach a tethered sensor via cable to the electronics part. Or just make larger or extractable arms - that would be just some more plastic and wiring, wouldn't it?

Currently the biggest limitation on the Printalyzer is the reach on the head of the densitometer, so for measuring any further than 75cm onto any surface. For checking edge densities and smaller test strips on a longer piece of paper, this is an excellent choice!

I would get one of the meters but I have my Pentax digital spot and my Minolta spot and my other flash meters.

That's the only issue with new products in established markets like film photography. I think as more of the legacy gear starts aging out, new products will become even more important!

There goes my crazy idea of doing a "Micro Format Monday" where I take out all of my wife's doll-sized fake cameras and attempt to present them as if they're something real. 😛
