NEW SRAM Powertrain eMTB Motor Review | Future Of Cycling Drivetrains?

Спорт

SRAM has finally joined the ebike fray. Many wondered if the brand would ever introduce an ebike motor and, as of today, the answer is yes it will - and indeed has.
The new Eagle Powertrain takes the fight to the best electric bike motors available and offers something the others don’t.
Developed in conjunction with ebike specialists Brose, the new Powertrain integrates into the Eagle ecosystem. Combined with SRAM’s new Transmissions, Powertrain offers automatic shifting, whether pedalling or coasting.
The AXS Pod controllers mean you can control your motor, transmission, dropper post and Flight Attendant suspension from the comfort of your handlebar.
It also means no separate remote is required for the motor, giving a super-clean, almost fully wireless look. Is the gap between non-assisted and electric bikes narrowing in aesthetic terms? Let us know what you think in the comments.
In this video, our senior technical Editor Alex Evans tells you everything you need to know about Eagle Powertrain and gives his first-ride impressions.

Would you use autoshift? Let us know in the comments! 👇👇Also a small correction, at 4.30 Alex says the battery is 230 watt hour... it's actually 250watt hour. Whoops! 😶‍🌫

of course not, I know better when and how to shift. Free shift, yes, that's good.. but the integration seems better on Shimano's system.

Riding bikes, especially road or mtb is a hobby thing. I get that you put autoshift on a commuter e bike which is more like a tool but this? Shifting is part of the fun

“Unprecedented level of integration in the bike industry“? Pinion MGU 1.12 “hold my beer”… Well, SRAM guys probably knew why they kept their product hidden behind tape during Eurobike2023.

I would prefer an automatic Gearbox instead of a automatic derellieur. So we got a lot more clearance in the back, a better integration and reliability

Yeah, anybody who thinks this motor might be "the future of cycling drivetrains" is completely out of touch with reality. Derailleurs will eventually be gone from e bikes and I can't wait for it.

The future of e-bikes is a gearbox and belt drive. The only downside of those systems is weight and friction, but the advantage is durability. Weight and friction are less important than durability on an e-bike

Shifting ist pretty bad under load so a big downside. Pinion works for many years on that and can't get it fixed that you can Shift under load. I seen pretty much Gates Belt fail so never an option for me! I would prefer a chain every single time! Chain and Gearbox is an awesome combo when they can fix it to shift under loads 🤷‍♂️

  • @Dang_Near_Fed_Up

@@mpvabi95 I agree, give me a chain as well. I can make a trail side repair with a chain, using small light easily carried tools and parts, but not so with a belt. The chain repair may cost me a gear or even 2, but I can ride out. When a belt goes you are stuck pushing your bike out, unless you have a spare belt and a good many tools depending on the frames' complexity. This may sound inconvenient, or annoying at worst to most riders. But as an above knee amputee, I can not carry a 2nd leg on the bike with me. And my modified riding leg is not capable of walking safely, much less over rough terrain while pushing 50 to 100+ pounds of e-bike and kit. So it is much more than merely inconvenient to people like myself.

@@Dang_Near_Fed_Uprubbish A carbon belt drive last at least 9 thousand up to 18000 miles. A brand new chain needs regular lubrication and last at the most around 4000 miles. Carbon belt drives don't make any sound and requires almost zero lubrication.

I am old school and I absolutely do not want any more complex computer control garbage on my equipment. I am forced to rely on motor assist due to an amputation, but I do not trust a computer to control anything on my bike. I have enough issues dealing with the one in my car, and the ones I have to cope with in the computer shop I work(ed) in.

Amazing.....soon the bike will not only shift for you but it will do the pedaling and the steering as well. I don't really understand the interest in removing you as the rider further and further from the experience of riding a bike. If someone is not good at shifting, perhaps they should practice shifting, instead of buying a needless complicated and expensive ebike.

Interesting technology but wiring doesn’t have to be ‘clumsy and untidy’. Neatly cut and taped cabling is imo a thing of beauty that makes the bike stand out and show its owner/mechanic’s craftsmanship. I’m nowhere near the best mechanic but always make sure the cabling is dialled, up to the point of feeling a slight ocd when looking at other people’s cable spaghetti..

This is starting to become something different from mountain biking. Autoshift, ABS coming, these are taking away things that are part and parcel to mountain biking. They are skills to learn no different from learning how to bunny hop. Come to think of it, maybe bikes that jump and turn for us are next. Not saying people can’t get bikes that do this for them, but I think we need to recognize that emtbs with this kind of tech really is becoming something different.

looks big, bulky and ugly. looks like the cheap chinese copy of the unit you can find on Specialized bikes. It makes Bosch, Fazua and TQ look like premium stuff... like Mercedes, Audi and BMW compared with cheap chinese Renault copies. Better to avoid it...especially if it has the same belt problems as the unit on Levos. It also makes the megawatt look so much uglier than before.

The only thing holding me back is the S Mag motor, I'm not convinced the belt is fit for purpose @ 90nm. That said, if you consider the Brose motor roadmap i.e. their development of the Brose Drive 3 system (releases 2024) which ditches the belt and provides 410% assistance plus 814w battery. That's the game changer for me. So I'm holding back until SRAM adopts the new Brose Drive3 system as their new powertrain.
