Long time fan and student here. I've said this before, but you are so incredibly inspiring. You make orchestration look like child's play. I always learn something watching your videos. Often it's the tiniest subtleties that make all the difference, like blending articulations to produce a more impactful sound. I sincerely appreciate your generosity in providing these videos to the unworthy masses. Thank you. Regarding the new Spitfire library...holy cow. I was surprised and a bit confused to receive an email yesterday saying I owned this new library. I didn't see this coming and I'm just blown away. This is an astounding value and I love the new interface and programming. They truly breathed new life into these classic, beloved libraries. Amazing.

I've got a lot of Spitfire libraries but always stopped short of the Symphonic series because I just couldn't justify the price for a hobbyist. I told myself fairly firmly: I DEFINATELY need to better use the ones I have AND sharpen my skills at orchestral composition, and don't need any more libraries. Yet I couldn't help but watch your video, you're that inspiring. And, darnit! SSO sounds REALLY great, it's such a distinctive sound, and inevitably I now want it! I'm not buying it at the intro price (20% off isn't enough of a discount), but next time they have a >=40% off sale it's probably top of the list.

Great job, Guy. I was surprised to find yesterday that I had a free version of this retooled library coming my way. You've now inspired me to get busy and write something just utilizing this library.

Great working review this library! There's always something to learn from your demos no matter what library you're using. I'm topped up with Spitfire libraries and can't don't see the need for anything at the moment but it looks like a major improvement on their interface and implementation. Looking good!

I first heard this motif on the track Crash and burn from Malmsteen's album The seventh sign. I never get tired of the feel of those few well chosen notes 😊

Nobody needs a smaple library really. BUT you will get a compeltely different room acoustic and 2x as many articulations and many mroe instruments. I use 4 or 5 different complete libraries all the time.

Because of the incredible sound of Lyndhurst Hall of Air studios (Gladiator, Interstellar and many incredible soundtracks record there). BBC is more a classic orchestral take and abbeyroad an other great studio so depending the cinematic, classic or orchestral sounds you're looking for or if you have the budget to record in. You got the choice of the rooms and orchestra who infuse the samples, therefore the musics and the souls of your tracks. 😊❤👌got it ?

Because SSO is better in almost every way. An extra dynamic layer and more round robins for many articulations, and the incredible acoustics and sound of AIR Lyndhurst are the main "upgrades". About the only thing BBCSO does better than than the new SSO is the cohesiveness of the players that have worked together as that group for years. But that's something that BBCSO has over every orchestral library IMO. I'm not blasting the talent of session players at all here of course, there is just something "extra" when get when you choose to record a working orchestra. Then there is of course the slew of extra microphones you get in BBCSO Pro, but now that they've brought over the outrigger and string leader mics from SSO Pro and put them in the "regular" SSO, all the absolutely necessary bases are covered. And if/when they add the remaining Pro mics as a paid upgrade (gallery, close ribbon, stereo pair, and three mic mixes), this advantage that BBCSO holds will be reduced a bit.

Was waiting for this before purchasing! Their symphony orchestra series has been on my wish list for a couple years now, but the price was too much for me to commit. Dropping it to an intro price of $499 (I think $620 regular) really made this a no-brainer for me, but was certainly waiting for your video before buying it! What a great deal on the Cinematic Orchestration Course. yeah, it's production values are dated but the material is all still very good and it would be hard to assemble such a crew of interviews and instructors like that anywhere.

The re-polished version of SSO sounds fantastic. And finally, for an affordable price for the common composer. Nice work Guy, I enjoyed this session.

What really counts at the end of the day is not so much which libraries you have but rather the quality of the composer/ orchestrator using them. They are not a magic fast track to avoiding the hours of learning the essential skills. As Guy always tells us: if you put rubbish in, you get rubbish out!

Thanks! Personally, I've always been MOST frustrated with combining/assigning controllers/mod wheels to my MIDI devices and my VST instruments end up sounding flat and lifeless and 'digital.' Even if you don't explain what you are doing with the left hand I'd still like to see what kind of buttons/wheels/faders/knobs/devices you're using and try to figure it out myself. I'm a newbie so I'll look at some more of your vids because you've probably already explained how your rig/devices are all connected and why. Thanks again!@@ThinkSpaceEducation

@@ThinkSpaceEducationI think an entire dedicated faders and knobs in action tutorial is warranted with the Midi cc nuts and bolts. I’ve watched most of your catalog now and that is the one thing that has slipped through the cracks. Which expression is best for a fader and which is best for the mod wheel? And which expression is best for a knob, or even a conventional computer keyboard switch? Are there some best suited for a pedal? And overall how many of them are “essential” midi cc that you focus on and assign no matter the library? It’s the bit that appears to be wizardry at this point. Even when I use the same patches, and even having some physical hardware, its hard to build the expression muscle memory on top of chords and rhythm when performing live. Thank you for everything you’ve done Guy, your work is exceptional.

Spitfire’s key switches defaulting to the octaves below the keyboard drove me crazy at first. Then I got a Korg nanoKONTROL2 and assigned the bottom row of buttons to those MIDI notes. Now I love it. You use StreamDeck, right? That would work equally well. The big disadvantage to assigning key switches to notes on your main keyboard is that they’re at the low end for high inst and the high end for low inst. Muscle memory doesn’t develop as well because you’re reaching for different places. Get your key switches on a separate controller where Legato is always button 1, long is button 2, CS is button 3, etc. It improves your workflow more than you’d think.

For sure. I've got the "drum pads" for my midi controller set to these. Also have buttons set on my launchpad mini. As well as so many button combos for my daw and auto hot key scripts for loading plugins, copy pasting, all sorts

very insightful vdo, thankyou so much!...I'm learning film scoring by myself and I felt very discourage when it takes so much time to make just a few bars...but seeing this make me realize the delicacy of the writing process...I am just curious though, with a much larger project for example a 4-6 minute piece...I was wondering how long would it takes for a professional to complete.

If you were looking to get your first symphonic library, and you wanted the most out of your investment, might you pick this one? Also on my radar is NI's Symphony Essentials. Thanks for this video! Always helpful to see how someone experienced puts something together.

Your approach to composition is so different from mine. I usually start in Sibelius and then move over to my DAW (Reaper currently) to fine tune it. I think I'm going to experiment with a DAW first approach like you have been doing. I've found that my approach has become too mechanical and formulaic. I think using your approach will add more improvisation and, hopefully, breathe some life into my music. Cheers and looking forward to your next video!

He's talking about spitfire Symphony Orchestra (SSO) - which works with the kontakt player (don't need to buy kontakt), not the BBC Symphony Orchestra, running on Spitfire's own plugin. Because of the "symphony orchestra" in the name, it's pretty difficult to find one or the other' mockup exxemple on youtube without confusion.

You need Kontakt player which is free

I am looking more forward to the computer modelling libraries which use us less memory and are coming along in leaps and bounds for expression and realism. Although they are rather costly right now.

Hey Guy... love your videos, and have a question I've not seen answered on youtube, which is... what is your naming convention for all the different parts that I assume are written say for a film? There must be dozens of short musical clips that fit certain places in the film, so in your DAW how do you keep them all straight??? Curious in Chicago.

In films it goes 1m1 1m2 1m3 where 1 before the m is the reel number and the number after is the cue number. I also add a version number as well so 1m13 v4 etc.

Thanks Guy, I'm writing a musical with many musical parts/ideas that might fit at different places... instead of trying to write a description in the file name, I've been just numbering them and then writing that number on paper with a description of mood, instruments etc, so I was curious how others dealt with the problem ... So they finally made the integrated version of it. So I'd imagine it comes with True legato and also Polyphonic Legato? I feel it's essential to have the instrument that can change articulations without having to press any other keys? Very nice

As someone who wishes to compose grand orchestral music for opera, film, or video games in the style of Hans Zimmer or John Williams, which orchestra would be most suitable between the BBC Core Orchestra and the Spitfire Symphonic Orchestra? To provide further guidance, I am ideally looking for an orchestra equipped with the greatest number of articulations and instruments, with a soft and warm sound for emotional music, featuring solo instruments that sound good and realistic. This orchestra will be paired with the Metropolis Ark One from Orchestral Tools to add the power it might lack during climactic moments. Thank you in advance for your response, and best wishes! 🎶

thanks for the videos you do! Im at the crossroads here. Ive been a user of logic pro then ableton and i mostly have been doing a mixture of pop songs + some lil ads and short films. But , i want to focus on film scoring more this year. Ive been trying cubase 13 on trial and Im really just wondering why most film composers as well yourself choose cubase on top of the rest? AS i did see you were on Logic 4 years ago.

In an old video he mentions that no one knew if Apple was going to discontinue the Mac Pro a few years ago. He said he switched to Cubase to be cross platform in case that happened. Logic is more than suitable for anything you need to do, and you can easily score a film with it. Cubase is just another tool in the toolbox for him. So I think the reasons were more practical than they were specific to something Cubase does than Logic doesn’t do. Really I would just work with whatever you have and master that. Then you can use anything you want.

How does it work with the sample delay for the performance patches? Is there one set median for this? as usually legato''s need much more delay comenpasation compared to shorts for example.

Burns a bit that I saved really hard and bought the SSO library one section at a time and then saved again for the next section, months apart, costing thousands and now available so cheaply.

Would be great if Spitfire could make more Pop/Big Band oriented products

It’s a free upgrade for those who own the old SSO. And worth it to get the new performance patches and new stuff. Does require downloading 350+gb of new files though.

Guy, I was wondering, since you use both Cubase 13 and Logic sometimes, could you tell me which you find to be more stable in larger templates? I used to use Cubase on Windows and loved it but it wasn't very stable for me. I got a Mac and started using Logic and it's constantly glitching out in larger templates. I'm considering going back to Cubase, but I'd like to know if it's stable

It looks like all travks are instrument tracks. Wont tjis us a hige amount of ram / processing? In a previous video you djowed how can be best yo use midi tracks. Do you have to use seperate instrument tracks for each musical instrument? Exvise my ignorance.
