Arirang is the most well-known Korean folk song. It’s believed to be first sang over 600 years ago, and passed down from generation to generation. Dokdo is in the central location from Mount Baekdu (in northern border of North Korea) and Mount Halla (in Jeju Island, South Korea). Let’s ride a boat together from Baekdu and Halla. When we dock our boats at Dokdo, we’ll witness a new dawn together. The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunite, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”.

Yeah, that's why other singers (Morissette, Kris Angelica, Eumee Capile, etc.) sing the *Sohyang* 's rearranged version, not the original version. And Vanjoss Bayaban and carmella, who finished first and second in *Voice Kids PH* , also sang in the finals with the *Sohyang* version. Funny thing is that most of them are Filipino singers Filipinos are known to most hate *Sohyang* , but I think the people who most love *Sohyang* are also Filipinos.

So Arirang Hill has many metaphorical meanings. We Koreans has had so many painful experiences (by division, by invasion from Japan and China, by poverty, etc). Arirang Hill represents the barrier or something to overcome to escape the painful reality, to reach an imaginary utopia, to realize nation's reunification, to meet one's love, to arrive at our homeland, etc. That's why this song evokes sadness, comfort(going hand in hand over the hill, or through the hardship together), longing for something or someone, a feeling of nostalgia, a feeling of unity, hope, etc. We Koreans feel some mix of these emotions whenever singing or listening to this song, and sometimes even shed tears. Nice reaction. Sohynag's rendition of Arirang Alone is one of the most enchanting and almost magical experience an audience can have, with or without any understanding of the lyrics. Sohyang's voice along delivers the drama of Korea's difficulty history and its people's desire. Thanks for the comment about how Sohyang's arrangement modernized the song. It sounds downright epic. The two climax notes, BB5 and G#5, were just unforgettable. She is indeed a master of her voice. Wonderful analysis.

And about the high note, B5b is like the most common note to hit for her (nowadays, she sings this not often, maybe because she is sick often). The original Arirang is considered the "unofficial" national anthem, which was first sang 600 somewhat years before north and south ever existed. Arirang Alone is a modern song released in 1990. It's is about the longing for the unification like you said. Also, Arirang Hill is not a physical place but a metaphorical meaning. Most believe that it represents life's hardship or tribulation.

For me, the most emotional performance by So Hyang is Everyone. It is super legendary performance. You should react to it. Btw thank you so much for the reaction

Here are more so hyang suggestions, depending on what you want to hear. If youwant to see her moving around a bit more & getting the crowd going then i suggest her performance of 'lean on me' on immortal songs 2 (michael bolton was actually in the audience & was so blown away by her that she has sung with him on stage on more than 1 occasion), if you really want her to take you to church then I suggest you watch her rendition of 'everyone' on the same programme,many people believe this to be her masterpiece(nearly 8 mins of magic) If you want to see her rock it out a bit more then check out 'mona lisa' on the king of masked singer(she does have a mask as the title of the show suggests but as soon as she opens her mouth it is very definitely so hyang) & if you want to hear her rapping then watch 'day day' on the same show. If you want to compare her singing a very well known song by one of the greatest singers ever then should head for her performance of 'i have nothing' at the DMC festival.i'm sure whitney would be giving her a standing ovation from where ever she is.there are so many goosebump inducing performances to see but these should do for now to give you variety. Many people comment on the fantastic arrangements of these songs but not many people realise that so hyang herself does the arrangements on the songs she performs

Spot on with this being a modernized folk song, it's believed to be about 600 years old with symbolic lyrics but is today normally about the split between North and South Korea and the longing for unification. So Hyang rearranges these songs herself. Her dress is likewise a traditional yet modernized Korean hanbok.

About climaxes in Sohyang's songs, I notice some of them happen not at the end, but in the middle. To me, that says 2 things: A. Her full confidence and capabilities to not having to save the best (hardest) for last, to KEEP ON _singing_ even after the most "strenuous" effort (in quotation for a reason, since Sohyang is too discipline to sing STRAINED, she not known for a MASTER technician for nothing.) And by continuing _singing_ for Sohyang means belting non-stop ofc, because she's a vocal stamina monster. 😁 B. The goal of her singing is not to impress others, but to communicate a (the song's) message, although she may showcase impressive feats of vocal prowess during the process as a TOOL or mean to convey said message. For example, in this performance, the most impressive climax/feat (and coincidentally the highest note for this song) is Bb5, not the G5 ending. The most insanely bright, fully supported, resonant mixed Bb5 I've ever heard, with vibrato! Five star technical perfection. Mind. Blown. The consistency is frightening too. Don't you just LOL when you read comment spouting "screaming", or any other garbage using technical terms that shows they actually have zero vocal pedagogy knowledge, but dare to tell YOU, the VOCAL COACH, as if you are the amateur, and not THEM? 🤣) I just wanted to say what I always say, for me, pianissimo Sohyang is the best Sohyang. Even in your previously reacted to video of Sohyang, "BOTW", although she ended the performance with the sustained G5 at the end (yet another golden standard from Sohyang befitting legendary status for its execution), Sohyang had actually already perfectly belted and mixed a few G5 in the middle of performance. I could go on with more examples, but I don't want to spoil performances you have not seen/reacted to yet. Just a heads up to remind not just you but anyone to not just skip to the ending of Sohyang's performance to see the "climax" like any other artists. Sad note to mention about Sohyang videos. For some reason, there's an army of nationalists from the Philippines who seem to resent the fact that any female singer from Asia outside of the Philippines gets attention. They appear especially on Sohyang videos going on about how she just screams, or contrarily, that she can hit the notes but doesn't sing with any emotion...so on and so on. I don't know why, but it's a thing. So if you're flabbergasted that there are people with seemingly cloth ears commenting, there's about a 99% probability that's what's happening.

My favorite singers are Morissette and So Hyang but im not phillipino or korean. I have also noticed sooo many hate comments from Phillipinos on So Hyangs videos. Always about how she is a screamer. Why are you even watching her videos if you don't like her? Apparently just to add a hate comment? It's getting really annoying.

It's quite sad though, because those who usually attack Sohyang are worshippers of Regine Velasquez. Such a phenomenal artist and vocalist tainted by a group of immature and full of hatred fans. I've seen people not wanting to check Regine's stuffs out because they were put off by these hate comments on Sohyang/Morissette's videos. Regine was unbelievably awesome during her prime and still is slaying in 2019. Those haters should really grow a brain.

Interestingly, many Filipino singers covered the rearranged version of Sohyang, not the original version (Morissette, Kris Angelica, Eumee Capile, etc.) And,first and second Ranked singers in 'The Voice Kids PH 2019' also used Sohyang's rearranged versions Filipinos are known to hate sohyang a lot, but I guess the people who most love Sohyang are also Filipinos.

“Arirang” is a simple traditional labor folk song that has long been practiced in Korea. And “Arirang Alone” is a modern reinterpretation of the traditional folk song “Arirang”. The “Korean War” began with the invasion of North Korea. From 1910 to 1945, Japan ruled Korea and in 1945, Korea became independent from Japan by Japan’s lost of World War II. And on June 25, 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea under Stalin's orders. U.N. forces, including UK troops, helped South Korea and in 1953, U.N. forces and North Korea including China concluded a treaty of truce. Since then, the Korean people have come to this day in pain of division. "Arirang Alone” expresses the pain of this division. “Baeckdusan”(Mt. Baeckdu) which stands for North Korea in this song, is an active volcano located in the northernmost part of North Korea . And “Hallasan”(Mt. Halla) which stands for South Korea in this song, is an active volcano located in the southernmost part of South Korea. So you can imagine that Mt. Baekdu and Mt. Halla are from the northern tip to the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula. So you can realize that the lyrics "From Baekdusan to Hallasan" symbolizes the entire Korean Peninsula. “Dokdo” is the most distant smallest island of the east of Korean peninsula. So in the song, Dokdo is described as a person who is lonely watching the pain of division away from the Korean Peninsula. @@weldon29 that is because the site is not secure - not a legal requirement and you only really need it if you are collecting data or money not via a thirfd party - Google like to scare people into thinking so - the link does work - super sorry if you can't make it work - no idea why - try going to the home page and clicking on the link www.thatsingingshow.com
