I like this unbiased style of reviews, very professional!
I can' t get enough of your reviews! Keep up the good work.
Another "exactly what you want to hear with no fluff" review Chris. Thanks for doing these.
This was such a helpful video, thanks!
1:46 LOL I had just put my Sigma i series 20mm f/2 on my desk shortly before watching this video. The aperture ring especially has the tactility of a vintage lens but the clicks are much more precise and incredibly satisfying. It feels better to handle than my other modern lens with an aperture ring, the Voigtlander Nokton 75mm f/1.5. I'd better take the Sigma off my desk before it becomes my new favorite fidget toy...
Been using this lens on my Leica SL 601. Very pleased with the images. And the lens is a lovely small size aswell
Another Beautiful Lenses from Sigma. Love it.
I was very willing to consider this lens to replace my current Sony-Zeiss 1,8/55mm, which is sharp but has quite nasty LoCA that I never liked. Unfortunately this Sigma doesn't seem to fare any better in LoCa. Also, the Sigma-usual disappointing sharpness at close range. What a pity.

True. But i suggest to check which Zeiss 55mm you have. You have the older 55mm which says “Carl Zeiss” on the front of the lens. The “Mark II” 55mm lens only says “Zeiss” which are newer. They said that the newer lens have better CA control….
You should make a video on the top 5 lenses for circular bokeh vs cats eye bokeh. I've noticed nearly every Sigma has pretty severe cats eye bokeh, even my 105mm F1.4 is surprising in that regard. My cheap Rokinon 85mm T1.5 is better than all my more expensive lenses. It'd be a great video idea since it's arguably one of the most important characteristics, given it's noticable even when viewing on a phone at a low resolution, and there also aren't many great resources that compare to find the truly best options. I think the Sony GM lenses might be the best, as the 50mm F1.2 seems excellent in that regard, but never seen a broad comparison.
Thank you for the review. Being an Canon RF system user and Sigma hater the same time, I have to admit this is the price/specs/build quality/whatever else where Canon is not able to play now, but Sigma is. This is so-called “Summicron” way. Canon makes “Noctilux” or “Summarit” and nothing in the middle. :(
I'll keep my Samyang 45 for the time being, even though it feels like a Mac Donald toy in comparison to the Sigma 😅. But it's extremely light, fast focusing and IQ is lovely. I sold it once and then looking through my pictures, I realized I've taken some of my favorite images with it.

Hi Chris, can you please review the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 when you get a chance as someone claimed it's sharper than the Samyang AF 18mm f2.8 FE...Hard to believe I know, but the only way to know for sure is one of your excellent and thorough lens reviews.
I doubt there is any supported sigma lens yet for focus breathing compensate.
How does it compare to the 65mm F2?
Thank you for your videos! I would like a 50mm prime focal lens with a nice bokeh, soft background, good sharpness but small and light enough. I'm hesitating between the Sigma or Voigtlander 50mm f2. Is the Voigtlander really worth paying more and not having autofocus? Could you please give me your opinion?
A twofer! Thanks CF 😁😁
Can I use your footage for non-commercial video production? compare other lens like yn 50dg dn? 😢
Awesome Cf
Gave me more motivation to wait for tamron.
Despite being expensive for a f2 aperture, wanting a little more from the close up image quality, not having the best sunstars, and suffering from Chromatic Aberration, the tactile aperture ring, remarkable sharpness across the frame, and being enjoyable to use places this 50mm as Mr. Frost’s favorite. This say a lot, as the man has seem a few in his life time. Where does the Sony, 50mm, f1.4, GM rank against it for those considering that one? It isn’t as small and it is double the price, but on paper it is fully weather sealed, (not just at the mount), just as tactile: more buttons & same clicky aperture ring, clinically seems to test even sharper across its aperture range according to lenstips, faster aperture f1.4, and has same/better autofocus speed & accuracy. Sill, fun/cute factor does count for something, and some lens can be clinically fantastic but also really cold and sterile. Does the Sigma 50m, f2, DG DN have something that does not show up in the measurables which garners that top place you’ve given it?
Hi Christopher, what do you think, which SIgma C lens is the best? I have the 35mm, 90mm and 65mm. From observations and from that review I think that the 65mm is still the best. That 50mm and the 35mm should be on par I guess.

All things being equal, it seems to me it's always easier to make an optically perfect lens with a longer focal length. Partly because a longer focal length necessitates a larger lens which in turn allows more room for extra glass elements etc.

What about the Sigma 65mm makes it your best, ( vs 90, 35)? Sharpness? Contrast, Distortion? Color rendition?
Yeah.... Nobody is looking for corner to corner perfection in a 50mm lens, i appreciate that they're making lenses as good as this one, but i would stick to the 50mm f1.8, specially since the close up clarity is not great.
"Its price is quite high for a 50mm f2." Let me introduce you to my good friend Summicron-chan. XD
Anyone seen a comparison between this lens and the contemporary 65mm f2? Can't find any reviews and comparison on both anywhere.
This or the Sony FE 50mm f1.8. I would probably buy this lens if I found a good deal. Then again Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8 might be the king of "slow" 50's for Sony.
Please, review tokina 85mm f1.8 atx...

Is breathing correction on Sony cameras working with 3rd party lenses? Last time I've checked it worked only with Sony lenses which are on the list (not all sony lenses even).

The way close up image quality suffers, presumably because it isn't a macro; do macros suffer at long range over non-macros also?
@HH60gPaveHawk
Жыл бұрын
Most macro lenses are optimized for close distance, but macro and more advanced regular lenses use floating elements (for example, Leica calls these FLE lenses, but they’re very common in the Sony GM and other premium lens lines. The floating elements change the optical composition preventing the close up (or far) focusing from being as bad.
I will stick to the RF 50mm 1.8 and use the saved 400 Quid to pick up the hood ....

As a DN lens you can't mount this on an R series anyway
Great review!!! It's somewhat disappointing to see its close-up and LoCA capability aren't that good this time as well, just like other many of thier comtemporary lenses are. Considering how good Fuji's new F1.4 primes are in every single regard, I really wish Sigma could improve a bit more.
€600, do they not know there is a chromatic cost of living crisis.
3:04 correction they haven’t opened that option for 3rd party
Looks cool but I already own a 50mm 1.8 🤔🤔

No I dont think so. I believe Chris is mistaken on this one.
I hate to say this but Sigma has a thing with their coating and glass choices that always tint the image yellow. While it can look nice sometimes, you're basically losing some wavelengths of light you're never getting back. I want to like Sigmas because their industrial design and build quality are great but the images are just not desirable.
I don’t see any reason to get this instead of the compact Sony 50mm F2.5 G.

58mm filter thread on a 50mm F2 lens what a letdown.
So you prefer the 65mm to this one, as it comes highly recommended and this one doesn't.
When were you in California? Some of the photos you showed, say California…
You should have a point system for the build quality, where the best ones would be a 10/10 and then you’d measure others by that number
I was curious to see a new 50/2. I love these F2. Finally lying is over. F1.4 or F1.2 are not needed in many application. Note, F1.2 are not F1.2 but darker - like more an F1.3 to be honest. People are paying for a premium that is not a premium. I rather would work with a lens that has something special. When looking at the most recent interations then I would say that most modern lenses are crap - there are just sharp and heavily corrected with software. It is like having fake t*t*ies. In nature is nothing equal and too perfect.

F stops wont be accurate , T stops does Some formats require large aperture to match FF formats result A headshot at 50 f2 on ff might need a 35 f1.4 on an apsc format to match the dof Sharp lenses exists , but its the degree to which they can be mass produced that increases Lenses like the sigma 30 1.4 beats zeiss and G lenses due to the process and material meeting lower pricepoints and yielding higher percentage of usable glass
Can't wait for the RF version!
