New Shimano GRX build on a Scarab with Alexey Vermeulen & Avery Stumm

After first spotting the then-unreleased 12-speed Shimano GRX mechanical at Unbound Gravel - and then doing an initial test-ride review once it was released - I received a group for long-term review. Here, I build up the group onto a Scarab Paramo, which is the Colombian brand's gravel frameset.
Since I don't have a bleed kit, I call Alexey Vermeulen in for help, and his KZread partner Avery Stumm comes along to help me with his camera.

Thanks, Ben, great to see you venturing into unique buids and that has to be half the fun of gravel, showing up on a hot rod you built up yourself, not that there's anything wrong with box-stock, just that you know riders are real when they unload their custom builds in the parking lot and get their rivals wondering what's up with that. 😀

Nice Ben! This hits home, as I just built up a new Stigmata (purchased partly from your review) with 1x GRX 12. I also went with a Wolf Tooth 44t ring, but opted for the 10-45 XTR rear cassette💪. Funny, but the 44x10-45 has wider range than my old 2x CX bike! Really love everything about the new GRX. Stages has my left crank arm as I type, so I'm patiently waiting. Another hat tip to you for recommending! Enjoy your winter rides on that cool bike and keep the videos coming, my wallet follows!

Ah, cool, cool. Where do you live, if I may ask? I definitely like the tighter spacing of the 10-45, but I feel like I've got a good handle on how that feels after riding and racing a bunch of SRAM bikes. I need to spend more time on these wide-range cassettes. And did you go rigid or squish on the Stigmata?

  • @jerseybarrier64

Interesting you were able to fit a 44 on the new Stig. Thought it was max of 42? I went with the same bike but built with GRX Di2. Thanks @TheRidewithBenDelaney as your review, crash and all, got me looking in that direction. I also took your advice and picked up a Rudy fork with plans on running the front line outside the fork for easy swapping.

It works. I have 5mm of clearance to the chain stay with the Wolf Tooth Chainring and GRX Cranks. I think they err on the side of caution since there are many potential setups.@@jerseybarrier64

I live in Atlanta, but ride frequently up in North Georgia. One of our big boy races is Southern Cross with 50 miles and 6k ft in elevation. My plan is to swap out the 44t for the 40t that came with the GRX crankset for that and any other steep ride. If that doesnt work, Ive read that you can buy the long cage for the derailleur and run the 10-51 cassette, love that option! I went with the rigid stig. My rational was that I already have a100m squish hard tail mtb and I love to "ride to the rides" here in Atlanta. Lots of pavement then a quick hit of some dirt and or single track at Big Creek Park (roswell) and Sope Creek Park (sandy springs). @@TheRidewithBenDelaney

Also, keep mineral oil around and use it to lube any O-rings whenever you replace batteries in things that are supposed to be sealed, like HR straps, power meters, and SRAM electronic shifter pods. This keeps the rings from getting dried out and failing. They'll stay nice and plump to keep water out and last forever. Pull the O-ring out carefully, wipe off any dirt on it and also on the tracks which it sits, and gently use pliers to dip it or hold it and wipe oil on it with a q-tip. You can literally eat mineral oil, so no rush to get it off you whatsoever. People drink a tablespoon at a time to treat constipation.

BEN, are still advocating the Giant revolt as your favorite bike???? I'm waiting to order a new revolt advanced pro 0 from my local dealer based completely on your recommendations. I figured with your broad experience riding so many gravel bikes you would know. I'll be using it strictly for gravel racing in our mtn region. Hoping to place well in 24 gravel nationals in Gehring in my senior age class. Thanks in advance!

I still love that bike, yes, absolutely. As I mention in that Top 5 video, the seatpost shim kinda sucks, but otherwise I give that bike a hearty two thumbs up. (And yes, some people gripe about pressfit BBs, but I am not militant about that.) See you in Gering next year.

Thanks. And yes, I'll certainly do a review on the Scarab down the road. It's smooth-riding for sure, heavier but not wildly so, and not quite as 'eager' to accelerate. Getting lots of comments out on the road about how it looks like a Pegoretti.
