New Series: Islam & Concubinage, Part 1 | Dr. Shabir Ally

This series is spurred on by a question from a viewer: "Why did the Prophet choose to have sex with a slave. Isn't this immoral?" Dr. Shabir Ally begins the series by explaining what concubines are and how they functioned in the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He and host Dr. Safiyyah Ally address larger themes they'll explore in future videos: We think of taking concubines as immoral behaviour today, so how could it have been practiced at the time of the Prophet, and how could the Quran condone this sort of relationship? What does all this mean for Muslims who strive to emulate the Prophet and revere the Quran as the word of God? They promise to discuss the issue of consent and the power differential between master and concubine.

not to make excuses for the practice of slavery, but a detail that goes overlooked is that slavery under Islam and slavery under the Europeans was very different. In Islam, racializing slavery was never practiced, once someone was free, they were treated as free, no strings attached, while in European slavery, being a slave was not a label you could shed, even if you were free. Not to say that Muslims were never racist, but Islamic doctrine has a lot of things that prevented a lot of the evils in slavery that European slavery did not.

The fact is that slavery was a punishment that was imposed on prisoners of war back then. It was both used as a threat to discourage other empires from waging war against you and as compensation for the soldiers who risked their lives on the battlefield. Islam however gave slaves rights and considered them as humans. So much so that children born to concubines often became Caliphs and a concubine who bears her master a child is called "um walad" meaning mother of child. Such a concubine can no longer be sold and would be considered a free woman if her master passes away.

I think you should also realise that the enslavement and emancipation of prisoners of war is something that is up to the ruler. The ruler decides what to do with prisoners of war, he has the right to set them free if he believes that it's in the people's best interest. The fact of the matter is that slavery still exist in the world but under a different name. Guantanamo bay is practically a concentration camp where people are put in cages without trial.

Imposing values from the top down on a population rarely works if ever. Studies show that if you genuinely care about effective change then the approach you take is to find examples of the behavior you want within the population and then nurture it and model it for the rest and gradually phase out the bad behavior. This is explored in depth in the book Switch by Dan Heath.

He skirted around the question, but did not answer it at all. Can a man be a truly holy man if he practices sin on a daily basis? His answer, well for that time... But if he is holy and he has direct contact with god, you would think "that time" would make no difference, right? Also, he mentions if the female slave and master are "attracted" to each other. Lol! Like the female slave being attracted to her master makes a difference. I'm sure it happened now and again, but the power dynamic wouldn't have made a difference. Yes, slavery took place in most historical societies; however, when then you add god into it, that your religion sanctions it, then that takes away the evolution of getting away from it. For example, slavery in Arabia got abolished in the second half of the 20th century. Some as late as the 1980's. Also, if a religion is the true word of god, then how does context of "practice at that time" make a difference? The religion can say we know slavery exists in society, but this is against god and our religion, period! Otherwise, morality is relative and not a fixed concept. And certainly if it is relative, then it doesn't come from a god, since you would think it would be a fixed morality and not relative to the time. This isn't a criticism to Islam only. This is a problem with all the religions I know off. You try to skirt around the issue, explain inconsistencies away, but are truly not able to with true logic. That's why religion is based on faith. Logic and evidence are not needed, and in fact discouraged.

If Allah let them to going into sexual relationship why in this verse Allah warn them to carefull about their privacy. Concubinage is not in any Quran verses. It is only in nerratives. And no one can say that they are %100 percent right. And slvaery ended with the decease of Prophet Mohammed.

Mohammud was a w0manizer and he exchanged his w1ves and s3x s1aves with his friends qu-ran chap 33 verse 52 and 53, taking s3x s1aves is sanctioned in qu-ran 8:67 an chap 23: verses 1 ,5,6. 2. Muhammud lu5ted his daughter in law zainab and forced his adopted son to divorce her immediately using 3 talaq and married her through order of his Phimp Wallah qu-ran chap 33:37. 3. If Mohd’s friends saw his two newly added favorite wives, Zainab and his latest v1rgin wife Aisha ( 9 yrs) in his house will ask for exchange ,bcoz Mohd. used to do it quran chap 33 verse 52 , so jealous Mohd. discovered the hijab verse and asked his wives to cover up when his friends come home, If they are not covered Mohd’s friends will disturb his wives............... A man is known by his friends ??

Standards at which we judge actions changes with time. I honestly don't believe that the Prophet had mistresses. Remember all Messengers had enemies. Hagar was Abrahams wife but the Children of Israel and Christians still do not recognise her marriage to Abraham, they still can her names and so on. Perhaps the prophet Muhammad had wives which were disliked by the Ummah hence were called names. I honestly do not believe that the messenger of ALLAH had extra marital affairs. I don't care whether these narrations come from Al Bukhari or whoever. Anyone who speaks evil of the Messengers of ALLAH I will not recognise

I am not a Muslim and I don't even want to look at this issue as a critic. I would rather look at it from a practical point of view. All the revered characters of the religious history of Islam, they came to this earth as human beings. And as we all know, human behaviour is not perfect and even the greatest human beings made mistakes or went wrong. God did not create them as perfect entities and added to that, some of the things that they did were outcomes of the prevalent circumstances of their times. Those persons are not remembered for these. They are remembered for the greater goals that they managed to achieve during their lives. Can things be judged from that angle? Every human being has his/her share of mistakes but what did that person achieve beyond those supposed mistakes? Their work, their messages, their achievements as a whole------let us see which side outweighs the other. This is just a humble opinion coming out of my very limited understanding.

The amount of mental gymnastic you have to do in order to justify Mohammed's actions is hilarious. Like, mixing of opposite genders is prohibited since it may lead to fitnah and zina is also punishable and haraam. However, feeling sexual attraction to concubines is not fitnah and having sexual intercourse with them is not zina. How can you not see the easiest solution here? Just don't have sex with them, period. If you accept that sexual attraction alone justifies sex with concubines, then any extra-marital or pre-marital sexual relationships should be allowed, or you have to bite the bullet and proclaim that concubines are worth less than free people. Or, you can just admit that Quran is an out-dated book written by human being(s) who lived a long time ago, and thus endorses moral actions that were a product of that time and not applicable in the present world.

If you think this is ok, Then it should be done to EVERY woman in your family. And THEN tell me how you feel. A truly good God and leader would NEVER condone the sexual harm of women at any time, at any place, by any person, and in ANY circumstances. It is NEVER appropriate to inflict sexual harm on another living being. Why would God create something just to torture it?

I have given reference in quran which speaks about the worse character of profir muhamud 1.

Dr.Shabir these things not just happened in the past. On the basis Islam's own reliable sources -- biography of Muhammad and Sahih Hadith, Muhammad engaged in selling and buying slaves, taking sex slaves as part of the booty. In one incident there was this really beautiful woman as part of the booty of war, one of companion's Muhammad had taken that woman as the spoils of war, another companion came to Muhammad and said, that particular woman is really beautiful and you might keep her to yourself. Muhammad called the guy who had taken the lady, told him that he can have 4 or 5 other woman of his choice but he has let go of first woman that he had taken, so Muhammad could have her for himself.

@T Akhtar The bible does not condemn ever act it disapproves of. Rather, it lays down principles so that the reader knows where it stands on issues. Here is an example, “But the king must not acquire many horses for himself or send the people back to Egypt to acquire more horses, for the LORD has said, ‘You are never to go back that way again.’ HE MUST NOT TAKE MANY WIVES FOR HIMSELF, lest his heart go astray. He must not accumulate for himself large amounts of silver and gold.” - Deuteronomy 17:16-17 The passage above was supposedly written centuries before Solomon. Now, when you consider that his many wives and concubines led him astray, is it not clear to the fair reader than God did not approve of his multiple marriages? We say that in many places the Bible is descriptive and not prescriptive. No Christian would look at Solomon’s many relationships and be like, “Yep, that’s God’s plan for my life. I need to marry as many wives as I can”.

@@NRFP Unlike Mohammed in the Quran, Abraham, David, and Solomon are not described in the Bible as the “perfect pattern of conduct”. We read about these great men of God and yet we see where they failed. The issue for Muslims is that their prophet who was supposed to be the best human, was no where close to being the best human. So they try to make excuses for him. Did Solomon really need 700 wives and 300 concubines? No! Did Mohammed need 9 or 11 wives and concubines on top? No!

Concubines were second class citizens. A slave can not give consent. It is IMMORAL to own another human being. Slaves and their only hope was to be impregnated and bear a child so that at least when the master dies she is no longer raped. However if she does not produce a child she is property and is willed to the next in line to be raped by them. Mohamed the Prophet had sex/raped his wife's slaves and women who were not "concubines". Muslim women are not allowed to have a male concubine. Either Islam is for all times and Mohammed was the perfect example whose example should be followed by all or NOT. This cherry picking nonsense is insulting to those with an IQ over 80.
