Matt Burch We bought ours four and a half years ago. Two things... Get a cover, and our tires max pressure is 50 lbs. This is what the sticker calls for on the side of the trailer. So, you check and inflate your tires cold. Once you get your rig rolling down a hot highway, at freeway speeds, tire pressure is no longer 50, and you are over the max pressure of the tire.

Or find out you don't know how to use it. Check those seals. All the time. Found two cracks this past weekend. We always carry sealant, RV tape, etc with us.

Watch the video for getting repairs under warranty. We bought a Jayco 317 RLOK on Aug. 31 2018 from Boyer Trailer Sales in Erie PA. Towed the unit less than 70 miles to our home and did a "punch list". Returned the trailer on Sept. 13, 2018. Trailer is still sitting at Boyer's who say repairs may not be accomplished for another 30 day and Jayco is at fault so "I" need to call Jayco. Called Jayco on Oct. 22, 2018 but they couldn't give me information, other than the repairs were approved. I would need a repair number from Boyer's if I wanted additional information. One repair remains which has been approved for a nine hour job. Jayco is less than 2 days shipping from Erie, PA and the repair was approved by Jayco, (according to Boyer's initial warranty repair response) on Oct 2, 2018. Did I mention questioning Boyer's why I should be calling Jayco and shouldn't they be calling, I was told by Nick Boyer "he" was doing "me" a favor fixing a brand new trailer Boyer's sold me. BTW, Nick also informed me there is no "lemon law" regarding any RV. No, I have not heard a response as of Oct. 22. Update: Having placed two calls to Boyer's on 10/30/18 , the first to Nick only having to leave a message he return my call and the second to Josh in service, I learned our RV is scheduled to enter a service bay on 10/31/18 for the needed service and we can expect to to have it returned in 1 to 2 weeks. We also learned an additional 3 hours has been approved for the repair making for 12 hours total man hours. I should like to mention Josh has been most gracious in assisting my wife and I with the needed service. Josh certainly has a job you couldn't pay me enough to do. Though we've thanked Josh I wish to say thanks again for his help. As for the return call from Nick we're still waiting. The Griswold's TrailerTruckingVacation

When i bought my coach (1 year old) from a dealer, this is what i did. We hammered out a deal and right before signing, i told them i had hired a guy to come and do a PDI. They weren't a fan of me doing this at all!!! This took 25 minutes just for me to be schooled by the dealer they they would inspect it....lol But i didn't care about what they were going to do and ultimately was either willing to walk or just sign my original deal. Bottom line, after the PDI was completed (on the dealers lot by a professional i had hired) I was able to negotiate another $11k off our previous negotiated deal to cover the repairs!

I agree that these are good tips. I also agree that they should be done before you leave the dealer. This way if you do run into a problem or just have a question about something on whatever list you use, help should be readily available and you will save time and the aggravation of having to pull the trailer bat to the dealer for any questions or repairs.

I know these are great things to do when you get your new toy home, but some of these things should be done at the dealership in case something goes wrong! Turn on the gas and check for leaks while you are there! Doing a full "walk around" before you leave would be a good idea, even if you can't do it all, such as water. My favorite power testing tool is a drill motor. The best advice are getting a surge protector, checking the seals (check the seals, check the seals, check the seals........) and Sleep In It!!!

I actually advise testing the 12v powered items, the slides, the gas, the water lines, the A/C, all that stuff AT the dealership BEFORE you take the rig home. It’s a lot easier and better to just leave it there, if there’s a problem, than bring it back after you get it home. They want it off the lot. They’ll fix stuff quick to accomplish this. Not only that but the dealer should have tested ALL that stuff prior to releasing it to you. Yeah……right. 🤣😂

Check your seals LOL. Best advise to share as very few RV's do not have water issues and the ones that do not show water issues "probably have water issues". I have owned a campground for 20 years and have seen hundreds of RV owners that never even washed their RV, never ever cleaned out the gutters, never ever treated or cleaned the roof and then traded it in or sold it for a hunting camp because it was rotten. RV's need maintenance, RV's need maintenance, RV's need maintenance, did I mention that RV's need maintenance? The old saying "a stitch in time saves nine" should be engraved on the fridge door.

Step number one; check to see if your state has any consumer protection similar to "lemon laws" and laws against arbritary agreements hidden in fine print. Once you sign on the dotted line, forget trying to get your money back, without great difficulty, if you are sold a lemon. We bought a Jayco 317 RLOK on August 31, 2018 and returned it to the dealer for a structural crack in the fiberglass panel near the pin box. The problem was approved for repair under warranty allowing for a "9" hour repair. The trailer was returned for repair on Sept 13, 2018 and remains on the dealers lot as of today Oct. 27, 2018. We sure are enjoying our Jayco 317 RLOK purchased from Boyer Trailer Sales, Erie PA. Tell Nick, we sent you.👍 Update 10/30/18..... All parts and materials at the dealer so Our "dream" RV is scheduled to enter a service bay on 10/31/18 and we should expect to pick it up in one to two weeks. Also, labor is now set at 12 manhours. um, takes 1 to 2 weeks to perform 12 man hours of labor??? Update Nov 7, 2018: 1 week has passed since our trailer was to enter a service bay to accomplish a 12 hour repair aaaaand, we have not heard if the repairs have been completed. Stay tuned. Update Nov 8, 2018: Brought our dream trailer home on the 7th. Repairs are fantastic. Much much better than original work from the factory. (Shame on Jayco for such shoddy work). My sincere thank you to the service dept at Boyers Trailer Sales, Erie PA. Though no fault of the service guys it took 7 weeks having our RV unusable for repairs requiring only 12 manhours of labor. All parts and materials were readily available as they were common to the construction of the trailer model and at best, would require 2 days shipping from Jayco to Boyers. Note to Nick Boyer, check your voice mail. I left you a message on Oct. 30 asking you to return my call. I'm still waiting Nick. Thanks again to the service dept at Boyers for doing such a nice repair. 👍 End of story.

You assume that the service group was just sitting around waiting for your repair to do something. Not that they had other work to do that most likely predates your work order. I work in service industry, and it always amazes me how every customer thinks that I am delaying their repair while I am in the process of fixing 2 to 5 other peoples equipment that came in before them. Reality Check - you are not the only service customer waiting for repairs.

Also, if any chemicals are involved in the repair, many take time to cure, so the 12 man-hour estimate is not 12 hours straight though. While techs are waiting for paint, sealant . glue to set, they work on something else.

Yes, driveway camping. It’s something most people don’t do. What better way to find out what you forgot to put in the camper. Plus it’s a great way to get everyone comfortable with your RV and it’s systems. Nope you can’t run into the house to go potty. Learn to use the RV bathroom

Step 2 should be "spend the weekend near the dealership".. Then, on the monday, you can call back in and get them to answer any questions.

You should do this before you leave the dealers lot and don't cut them a check until you test most of these.

i have my 5th wheel parked in the driveway and use it as my getaway/man cave/office. i have a computer connected to the house network. i have chairs and a table under the awning to relax under. i dont use the facilities as the house is nearby, but i have that as an option. mentally i am far away as my view is an open field across the street. i used to store it elsewhere and would camp only a few times a year. although i dont take it camping i do have that as an option too. in other words like he said "enjoy your camper!" get your money's worth! i like having the outdoor kitchen to grill on and the fridge holds my beverages. it's great having two fridges

I love it! That's right, use it - one way or another! It's pretty nice that you live somewhere that allows that. Where I live, a practically have an HOA citation and lien against my property by the time I pull it into my driveway and load it!!! Lol.

I could do the same WHEN I get my Class B (probably a short-base 19' Sprinter, as that's the only way I can get 4x4 presently) -- use it as a getaway -- since it'll be in the parking lot/driveway: It's going to be my Daily Driver. So parking (storing) it "off-site" won't do...not to mention the monthly cost of that. And whether I'm still renting at an apartment complex, or I buy a house or condo (preferred), I'm hoping that since it's one of the smaller "vans" it can get by the "you can't park a RV here" issue. -- BR

True, but as many people get older they can't physically deal with keeping up/maintaining a house anymore (one reason so many of the elderly's homes look run-down -- yard AND house), so at least in a HOA community all the outside/roof maintenance is done for them. That is, IF they can afford to to live there (and pay the HOA fee each month). So a detached house/no HOA vs. a condo/townhome HOA -- each has its pros & cons, and each has trade-offs. -- BR

Good list, thank you. For what it's worth, it's just a water heater... not a "hot" water heater. If the water was already hot it wouldn't need to be heated. ;) CHECK YOUR SEALS EVERYONE!!
