NEW RULES for FREE Camping on 525 & 89b in Sedona AZ

Discover the Best Free Camping in Sedona! | Aerial Views & Reviews of 7 Campgrounds on Forest Road 525 & 89B
There are new rules and regulations surrounding the land use (aka free camping or boondocking) within the Coconino National Forest forest service road 525 and 89b just outside the ever-popular Sedona Arizona red rocks. In this Free Camping on 525 Campground Review Video, we provide a brief overview of each of the total 7 campgrounds along each road and provide aerial drone views of each location. Giving you an excellent opportunity of knowing what each spot has to offer, and where it's located--providing you with a well-informed decision on where you're gonna want to camp.
The higher-ups have cracked down on being able to park and camp at any location you want off the 525 and 89b (or Angle Valley Rd or Deer Valley Rd) in hopes of preserving the landscape. However, Sedona has wreaked havoc in people's plans when it is such a popular and busy destination.
People are corraled into just 5 designated camp spots along forest service road 525; these include Surprise Campground, Windmill Campground, Cockscomb Campground, Greasy Spoon Campground, and Nolan Campground, and 2 up forest service road 89b; these include Javalina Campground and Angle Valley Campground.
7 Free Camping on 525 Locations
00:36 Surprise Campground
1:02 Windmill Campground
1:39 Cockscomb Campground
2:14 Greasy Spoon Campground
2:43 Nolan Campground
4:11 Javalina Campground
4:40 Angle Valley Campground
Despite all the new rules and regulations surrounding the land use of forest service road 525, the boondocking/ free camping on 525 is some of the best camping in America. Especially with the world-class hiking, mountain biking, and outdoor activities residing inside the nook of Sedona Arizona.
Our favorite campground with a campground feel is Nolan on 525 and our favorite on the 89b side is Javalina.

I chose Angel valley when I went there. It has sooo much privacy compared to the others. I drove a WRX through it with no problems. PSA/Rant: I visited when it was dispersed camping. It was nice, It felt like camping. Now, it feels like apartments for poor people. A bunch of cars parked on a dirt road culdesac. It looks like a third world country neighborhood! I’ve gone over the pros and cons of the decision and the only true, down to earth, no bs answer is that they want less people to camp out there.

Thanks for the video, upsetting they closed off so much of the forest to the public. Glad I got to experience it last year before they changed everything for the worse.

You bet! It certainly is. You were definitely a lucky one being able to have the true solitude of the area all to yourself!

You can thank all the van lifers and homeless who tried to live there for more than two weeks. They ruined it for everyone else. When we had less tourists we didn’t have any problems.

Good job on the video - We were up there a couple of years ago and stayed at Javelina - took our ATV all up and down the 525, it was basically wide open at that time and wasn't really too crowded either. I think some of the folks in the Sedona area were getting fed up with folks basically trashing the place and leaving. That happens everywhere more or less, but I did see most folks being very considerate of the land... Very sad, such a pretty area.

Silly question- but is there any type of cell service here? Just curious if I should purchase a satellite communicator before my trip. Thanks!

Yes. We actually get good service at the beginning and end of 525. Middle sections are spotty. And 89a didn’t provide any service for us. We use us cellular and it partners off AT&T and Verizon towers. Hope that helps. Enjoy your time there!

This area is now closed to dispersed camping. The only one i know of around the area is down the Hwy about 10 for miles on AZ trust land. A permit is required BUT there are mostly overrun by homeless people living there waaaay past the 14 day limit. Run down and unsafe to stay even for a night now. So sad that the land is treated like this

I just did a quick check on www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/coconino/recarea/?recid=84034 and it appears everything is still open for all camping in the 8 designated spots!

lol. it is the democrats who are trying to keep public lands open. the repubs want everything privately owned, for cattle, oil drilling, mining, etc.. who are the politicians designating national forests/monuments, and who are the politicians rescinding those designations?

Way to go, Interjecting politics into this! The new restrictions are simply a case of it being an overused and trashed area. The USFS is super conservative by the way.
