The Americans with envy killed this rifle because it was better than anything they had in the 1950s. I wish Churchill was never reelected, and maybe this beautiful would have continued with multiple upgrades.

I'm not a military man but I can imagine a version of the EM-2 with 30+ years of tinkering would have been a million times better than the godawful L85A1 before they tore the guts out of it and made it into an acceptable gun (source: a couple of squaddies I've gotten drunk with)

It's wild that now they tell you that a single shot without ear pro will ruin your hearing. ( I don't doubt it, but that would mean all the soldiers that make it back from the front would be deaf, right?)

Every unprotected exposure to extreme levels of noise like an unmoderated rifle will damage or reduce your hearing. That damage is cumulative (it adds up over time) and irreversible. The damage increases exponentially with the level of noise, so the louder it is the less exposure time it takes to cause damage. Under 60dB is ok for hours at a time. Over 100dB only takes an instant to cause damage. Yes, a lot of people regularly exposed to loud noises (factory workers, aircraft mechanics, soldiers, proof house workers, recreational shooters, shooting instructors etc.) universally suffered from partial or total hearing loss over time. Like loss of teeth, uncorrected hernias, haemorrhoids and reduced vision it was far more common just a few decades ago than today. They were seen as somewhat inevitable results of age -- and don't forget that life expectancy was about 65 years for men when this film was made so there was less time to have to live with the consequences.

In fact the EM-2 DID get officially adopted, but only for a short while. The Americans were adamant about a cartridge roughly comparable to their own 30-06: Nato's 7.62 x 51 mm. They were making large quantities of it and now they should use this "superior" intermediate cartridge in stead? Never going to happen. For the sake of military unity with the US and with Nato, it was decided the UK would use the standard Nato round. This cartridge was too strong for the EM-2, it had to be redesigned for it etc. In the end, a Belgian type of rifle, the FAL got adopted instead. In the 1960s, the USA switched over to 0.223...
