New Railroad Crossing & Track Already Inactive
This line is owned by FEC but they leased it to SCFE ( South Central Florida Express ) in some places in Clewiston and South Bay you can still see the old school No Trespassing Private Property Florida East Coast Railway signs. The registration mark on the hoppers used on this line read USSC which is United States Sugar Corporation. Just after Clewiston, these train tracks were owned by ACL and CSX currently. Word on the street is that the lease is over in 2025 and FEC wants that sugar business back. If you are ever in South Bay, please be careful with the speed limit, they enforce it very strictly and goes from 65 MPH to 35 in no time. This crossing sports gates and bells and was used by the Southern Garden Citrus Plant on Highway 833. It is around 8 years old and this industry spur is practically abandoned (not legally).

Jeezeree, this rail line is practically new and already abandoned? What is wrong with this picture? Like you said, maybe this was another pandemic victim, maybe it fell victim to outsourcing (which is a bit ridiculous). Whatever the reason, here’s hoping SOMEBODY can bring this area back someday, including the rail service! Here’s hoping at least. Stay safe out there, Roly!

You should make a video of the railroad in O’Fallon, Illinois. I live less than 2 miles from it. It’s inactive. I remember seeing an occasional train on it. It was owned by CSX. But in 2015, it was closed. Even though they sent a couple rounds of storage trains through it, they don’t have any plans to reopen it for a while. You can check it out by looking it up. Type in “CSX railroad in O’Fallon, Illinois” then you will get news articles about it. Maybe one day, you can visit it in person.

The citrus industry in Florida is not what it was once. This plant closing doesn't surprise me. Development of land and some climate change in central Florida has been an issue. There was a freeze back in the 80s that closed down two of our plants. The Tropicana plant in Bradenton is still the main processor.

This is an interesting railroad crossing. We can see that the rails are shiny both before and after they cross the highway. So that would indicate that there must be a train passing over the tracks every once in a while. Unless there is a crew of people with Brillo pads who go down the track and scrub the track clean every day. You certainly get some rain in that part of Florida which would cause rust to form on the rails. Did you think about going to the citrus plant to see if it was back in business? Or is there some other business that ships by rail somewhere along the tracks? If the citrus plant is still closed down, could the tracks near citrus plant be used to store cars? The movement of stored cars in and out of the storage area could account for the shine on the rails. When I clicked on the Google Maps link that you included, I first looked to see if there was a date that indicated when the satellite view was taken. The only date shown on the Google Map is a copyright date of 2021. Since there is only a copywrite date it is hard to tell when the cars on the siding near the citrus plant were actually there. Wait a second! I just did some more exploring in the Google Map link you provided. If you keep following the tracks to the north of the highway crossing, they curve around and just before you get to Southland Drive there is a switch that takes the tracks parallel to Southland Drive. The tracks also continue straight and cross Southland Drive. This section of track that goes straight is where I first saw the siding and some kind of structure which I thought was the citrus plant but that structure is not the citrus plant. You will find the citrus plant at the end of the tracks that parallel Southland Drive. Before you arrive at the citrus plant, the tracks come to a three track yard. If the citrus plant is still closed, this three track yard could be used to store cars that are not being used in revenue service at the present time. The movement of stored cars in and out of this three track yard near the citrus plant could account for the shiny rails.

@@railrol82 We keep forgetting that Florida is NOT a one-industry state - not even in terms of food - no more than Hawaii is. (How many folks realize that Hawaii grows coffee - in fact, is almost as famous for it as either Colombia OR Brazil? No; so NOT kidding - ever heard of Kona? It is one of the Hawaiian Islands, and the major coffee-plantation region of the Fiftieth State. Coffee from Kona - if you are lucky - can be found in higher-end retailers - such as Whole Foods Market - or off-price at (no fainting!) TJMaxx or HomeGoods - *I* have found it there myself on their bargain tables.) Coffee and the United States; we do more than drink it. Getting the chance to actually try Kona-region coffee for myself was a serious wake-up call about making assumptions about anything; it is, in fact, a major reason why I not only no longer do, but advise against the practice. Another reason for the wake-up call is that one newer player in the Fair Trade organic coffee space is actually based in greater Washington, DC's suburbs - Rockville, MD (and SIlver Spring, MD before that) - Mayorga Organics. I have done business with them since I found out about them (local business). Mayorga Organics has coffees from most parts of the planet - with one exception: Hawaii. [Full disclosure: In addition to their own brand, they also supply and roast for local organic-foods grocery chain Mom's Organic Market - that I also do business with.]

If I may, I'd like to correct a couple of things-not to break your chops. FEC never owned the tracks west of Lake Harbor(SE of Clewiston). Those tracks belonged to Atlantic Coast Line, later SCL, then CSX. ACL originally ran a couple of trains a day to Clewiston to service US Sugar. SCFE [US Sugar] now owns all the rails in the Clewiston area all the way up to Sebring where they interchange with CSX. (SCFE also operates on the FEC line east of South Bay up to Ft. Pierce). Much of US Sugar's operation is seasonal (I used to drive for Walpole hauling raw sugar to the Port of Palm Beach)and that plant is probably one of the seasonal operations. Looking at the satellite images on Google earth you can see there are other sidings on that line as it comes west from a little bit south of Clewiston. Much of this trackage is only accessible from dirt roads that are probably USSC private property. I haven't driven out there for about ten+ years and I wouldn't take my current van on those roads. US Sugar has their fingers in other pies besides sugar growing and processing and SCFE serves other customers on the line to Sebring. Also at Palmdale, you can see evidence of another ACL line that used to go south through La Belle to Immokalee-and even further to Everglades City. I hope this is helpful and is not meant to criticize, but to inform. I have driven many portions of Florida chasing "ghost" RRs-lines that were there but aren't any more-and I have a few more I hope to get to. Some day.

While US Sugar does some processing itself, they also do business with other companies (Diamond Sugar - another southeastern US regional operation, and Domino Sugar Baltimore are two of them) In the 1990s, CSX ran intermodal train sets from Domino Baltimore to the sister plant in Tarrytown, NY (now shuttered); the quirk is that Domino Tarrytown was *younger* than Domino Baltimore - mismanagement?

What equipment are you using for filming? I don't believe it is geostabilized. Also, I wonder if you can wear a boom mic with your gear? That way your voice would be the most prominent signal recorded, regardless of the geometry of the camera and the background noise (traffic, etc.) Cheers!
