Good stuff. Also, I just realized the nagging sense of what the form of these speakers reminded me of: B&W 801s and 804s. The IQs sound more open with the OB midrange driver.

If these lovely speakers can sound THIS good over the limited bandwidth of a KZread playback, they must be out of this world hearing them played live ! Our 2024 Montreal Audio Fest is 22 to 24 March . . . the 2 channel stereo aficionado per capita population in Quebec Canada is well over the average in Canada and the USA . . . I hope we might have the privilege of hearing these great speakers in Montreal! Congratulations on an imaginative and effective design !! See you this coming March? :-)

Love the open, expansive sound and deep bass of the IQ (I assume that's the name of the larger unit?)

After several passes through the samples, the IQ's sound to me brighter (especially with cymbals) and more expansive; the Quantums, OTOH, slightly darker, seeming like I'm listening in a more confined space -- there's a mild impression of listening in a tunnel by comparison. To what extent this might be due to the system I'm listening on, I can't be sure. But if it's at all reflective of the actual sound, I think I still prefer the IQ's. Might be different in the flesh, of course. At the price of these, though I do love both (and thank you for the amazing quality -- for KZread -- of your recordings), I doubt I'd buy either even though, at a pinch, I probably could. Seems OTT when for around a quarter of the price I put together open baffle Decware ZF15M clones in 40mm thick solid oak. My guess is, the clones aren't a million miles away in sound quality. But just ignore me -- I'm the type to always be after the optimal price/performance ratio; some might just think of me as tight-fisted. ;-) I'm wondering how an open baffle section with just the mid driver and tweeter might sound mounted on top of a sub. That is, were you to supply the top bit of the IQ's separately, or maybe just the drivers for someone to make their own baffle. Wouldn't surprise me if you didn't -- might not fit your business model.

Thank ou for your comment and sharing your opinion. Yes the DIY is a totally different game, and if you know your stuff yes you can use the budget more effectively. However one has to be on high level of knowledge and experience since if it was that easy everyone would do it. DIY is great fun and hobby but for most people its the same kind of offer that Caterham car brand do where you can instead of buyng complete race car, buy it in parts and assemble it in your garage for a hefty discount ;)

@@QualioAudio Thanks for the reply. If one is talking about multiple-driver OB's, I generally agree. However, I'm a duffer who can't even solder and so didn't go down that route. The Decwares use a single full-range driver and one can purchase the plans for $30. I got the supplier of the baffles to cut them to shape (including the hole in each for the driver) from the 3' square solid oak tabletops he usually sells -- they cost me just under £600. Add the drivers and a few extra bits of wood to mount the baffles, and all one needs is a screwdriver and some Danish oil. I put them together in less than a day -- imho the best £1300 I've ever spent. The Qualios probably sound a tad better and look nicer, and are priced not unreasonably for commercial offerings, I won't deny.

Have you tried the speakers with any well rated budget amps as an experiment?

Does the open baffle approach not work with a slim baffle as the Quantums have?

The AMT tweeter is still in a small open baffle. The size of open baffle only determines how low the driver placed in it will be effective in reproducing low tones. It depends on the wavelength so for the tweeter the baffle does not to have be very big and for the bass unit the bigger the better.

Oh my mind... I love the size of the Quantum speakers. I wish it tweeter and mid is open baffle like the IQ. What was the reason the mid is not open baffle for this design?

Hi, Thanks for the comment and positive feedback. The midrange had to be in the cabinet due to the size, Open baffle makes the driver not able to go as low as in the cabient when the baffle is narrow. So we could only go with the Mundorf AMT in OB in such design ;)

Where can I try these in Hong Kong

I prefer the Qualio IQ speakers. I will be purchasing these this year.

you've probably know / checked it out already. but here it is: Height: 101 cm / 40” Width: 20.2 cm / 7.95” Depth: 29.5 cm / 11.6” Weight: 25 kg / 55 lbs

The sound exist outside in the front of the cabinets, and are very present. I wery like it a lot.

I think it would have been better to install the woofer also outside, below the tweeter, to have a sound more similar to that of the big guy. Why did not you choose that option?

Because of dipole cancelation. It would require the baffle to be as wide as the big pair which would mean there would be no point other than making a shorter speaker. Only other option would be angled asymmetrical wings which would change the aesthetic.

Das wäre auch ein schöner 3wege diy speaker. Gerade weil man alle 3 Chassis offen kaufen kann. Plus crossover Teile.👍👍👍

Obviously Quantum is Tighter and IQ is Wider and way open and much clearer.

The open midrange sound more open 😂

I think that comes down to amp/speaker synergy and room size. I'd personally pair the IQ's with Vitus Signature series gear & Jorma cables in lieu of a class D integrated, and place them in a medium size room with plenty of room to breath. Maybe the Quantums are a bit more forgiving of lesser amplification? I thought the Quantum's midrange sounded a little recessed in comparison to the IQ's which sounded more open and better balanced. You can hear the soundstage collapse when they're playing. The Quantum's are also 1db less sensitive (88db). That said, we all have (literally) different ears.

Thank you for your comments. Indeed the openness of the IQ is something unachievable for any no dipole/omni-polar speaker. Quantum is destined for smaller rooms. Most people in Europe have around 20 meter living rooms and that's the sweet spot for this speakers. What Qualio delivers across the line is natural open sound, dynamics, and great bass kick that when it appears makes so many people stunned :) And Quantum can deliver all that as well which is unheard of for this speakers size ;)

Impressive. But why compare them to one of your own? Seems counter productive.
