They have a monopoly over the right-of-passage in our society, and they have been jacking up the price ever since. At some point doing the 80s, they warded off most of the desirable jobs in society from people without a college degree, thus making advancement impossible unless you went through them. The only reason college is valuable is because of that piece of paper you get at the end of it; otherwise, it's just an overpriced, 4-year boozefest.

Agreed, the prices should be less or more funding options should be made available. I'd also encourage that financial literacy or a transition class be offered in High school to give students a better understanding of the next steps (especially for first-generation students interested in college aka first gen. college students).

The price has to come down! And...my son wanted to purchase a used book in one of his classes but the professor required purchase to a link for an online book. It was part of the grade to get your own link so he and his gf couldn't share the "book." Universities hire adjunct professors and don't pay them what they are worth so why is it so expensive? Ridiculous!

Education, too expensive. Cars, too expensive. Homes, too expensive. Realizing your country is being taken over by big business who simply raise the costs of everything for the sake of buying a 5th yacht: Priceless.

It’s a finical trap. If you have rich parents fitting the bill why not. However, for the rest of us to take on so much of debt so young is ridiculous and there should be a better way. Shame on America!!! Ruining young people’s lives before they even began. Most of the majors don’t make enough money to even pay the loans back. Let’s have a real conversation. Or the good jobs are going to go to the CEO family members/friends. Or you’re going to end up training them to take your position. Here’s the kicker, and they might not even have a degree. We’re tired America! And we’ll pass. It’s time for a new dream. Glad everyone is waking up.

I'm 50 this year and the most useful thing I've done is travel - it's confidence building, brings incredible experiences, some negative that you learn to manage and gets you out of your own backyard. In my opinion, unless you're training to be a surgeon or likewise, a lifetime of debt just isn't worth it.

Why didn't she speak of certification? For many people who can't afford to go to college and "think" about what they want to do, certification can give you the tools needed to that field. Remember your student loans does not let you "think" you owe them, when you do.

I dont care about what is written on the degree or what title it gives me! I would love to go to college and learn more about what I want to do and have in person experience, but then the immediate negative thought is the cost. Paying for something that I would have or try to pay for most of my life and having little money to pay for other things is just not worth it.

No, an associate's degree is not useless. An associate's degree is an intermediate step between a high school diploma and a bachelor's degree. An associate's degree can be seen as complementary to the bachelor's degree, and it is often more economically viable, according to academic and economic experts. Some degrees do teach you skills (many degrees in medical/helping professions often require field experience to shadow professionals and practice applying theory). College institutions also provide opportunities to learn/apply research skills! There is a host of ways one can gain skills during a 4 year (or more) degree process that brings value to many companies!

College cost too much and pays off to little for most. Did nothing for me. No employer ever asked about it, they only wanted to know if I could do the job they were hiring for. Bad news for our country which is trying to compete in a global economy which is driven by scientific discoveries, technological innovation and engineering. I guess we could build more Starbucks and McDonalds to employ these folks who don't want to do the hard work of educating themselves. An engineering degree, for example, is hard, requires focus, and a bit of intelligence. I know, I earned one, and it didn't leave much time for partying and slacking. Worried about student loan debt? Do your first two years at a community college which is virtually free for state residents and live with your parents, then transfer.
