New pickups for my Ibanez AZ MM1

Музыка

In this video I'll replace the Hyperion stock pickups of my Ibanez AZ MM1 guitar with Thronbucker pickups from Suhr. See how I struggle with color coding, learn more about tapping and hear, in a detailed tone comparison, how different the new pickups sound.

    I have the same Thornbuckers but uncovered in a strat body. I found them too bright and tending a bit thin. I changed the 500K pots (which I bought specifically because we are always told humbuckers should have 500K pots) with 250K pots. In an amp that sounds good for a classic strat, these pickups are now in about the same general tonal range. It was most weird when a huimbucker guitar sounded brighter thasn a strat! Problem now solved. The mess that is pickup wire color coding was a pain for me too.

    It is all about your own preference. I would like to hear a comparison after you adjust your amp for the new pick ups. However, I can tell the new pick ups have a slightly lower output which makes the notes stand out more on high gain settings. I did like the sound of the original pickups too

    Hi there, again another one very qualitative and excellent video ! I’m actually waiting for my luthier guitar and on my specs I have included a dynamix 10 Ibanez switch system + bareknuckle VHII pickups. So had few points regarding your issue. If we sum up, Ibanez has inverted on the neck Hyperion both north/south and hot/cold as well (when I check the first picture of the Hyperion stilled wired). Fortunately Ibanez switch is correctly made, meaning if from the beginning you would have just ignore Seymour Duncan color code and just stick to your new pick ups color code and indication written on the switch you would have not face the issue. (But then we would not have noticed Seymour Duncan inverted color code as well, so thanks 🙏) I got it right ? Other remark, if the Hyperion neck pick up has a real power tap included, are the resistors on the switch only for the bridge pick up ? And if yes how can you have power tap for your new neck pick up if Ibanez circuit does not include power tap simulation through additional resistors ? In the end it looks almost plug n play switching pick ups on the Ibanez dynamix 10 which is a good thing !!! Thanks a lot in advance for your feedback 🙏 Keep sharing this excellent content 🔥 🎸

    Yes, regarding the blade switch wiring you are right - you can see this at 16:00. Currently I haven't analyzed the PCB of the switch but I think the resistors are mainly for the bridge pickup. I wouldn't take care that much about emulating a tapped coil - in the end splitted is pretty similar, just in a different location on the coils. Simply give it a try and if you like it it's all good...

    Aren't all seymour duncan's color coded different than other brands? I always see that when i see wiring schematics for pots. Their green color etc is different than all other brands. (btw good choice on the thornbuckers). I thought both sets sounded great, but the Suhr's sound more classic. I like low output into higher gain boosted with a pedal vs higher output. Both of those sets sound great, the thornbuckers are just more my style, they have that classic more PAF type dynamic.

    I watched this video while thinking about replacing the az pickup. What do you think? What pickup are you using now? Which pickup is more versatile? According to your opinion, I also agree that only a few selected tones appeal to me. I'm curious if changing your pickup will create a wider range of tones that you'll like. AZ's selector mode is very advanced, but I wish every tone was equally valuable.

    @@RockGuitarVibes Thank you for your reply. Your video was very helpful. I eventually realized that the issue lies with the circuit board of the AZ. The problem is with the integrated electronic board that needs to have the capacitors replaced to match the pickup. So, I have a plan to replace the entire electronic component. Thanks to your video, I've been able to minimize a lot of trial and error. Thank you.

    Wow. Cool. I have a question, hope you or other can help. I changed my sss switch system from standard 5 switch to use ibanez dynamic 8. What you are using is dynamic 10. But I'm confused because my pickup only has 2 wires. Hot and Ground. Meanwhile, on board dynamic 8 there are hot and cold. How do I wire my pickup which is only 2 wires? Meanwhile, the dynamic 8 board requires at least 3 cables (hot, cold, and ground). I've tried connecting hot to the switch board and ground to the volume pot. But there are 2 in alternate switch positions (positions 1 and 5), which should sound humbucker, but sound like normal switch position 3 (single mid pickup). Am I connecting it wrong? And what does cold mean? is it the same as ground?

  • @RockGuitarVibes

    @RockGuitarVibes

    Жыл бұрын

    Generally cold is the start and hot is the end of the coil. On most single coil pickups ground and cold is the same. In your configuration you have to treat the black cable as cold so it can be comined with other coils. However, if the position switch is set to single coil you have to connect that cold cable to ground. Because the exact wiring also depends on which kind of the position-switch is used, I would recommend to ask for help on a local music store.

    It seems all have issue in tunners, after replacing tuners does the string goes out of tune easily? Supposing i'm buying a guitar with floyd rose bridge and use whammy bar often which doesn't have neck string lock (double lock), will it goes out of tune easily and needs to retune quite often? This thing disturb my choice and option & have no experience in electric guitar at all.

  • @RockGuitarVibes

    @RockGuitarVibes

    Жыл бұрын

    If you have no experience with electric guitars at all I wouldn't recommend to start with a guitar which has a trem. Anyway, the best tuning stability is provided by double locking systems like a Floyd Rose - however, the cheapest version (Floyd Rose special) is not very reliable, so don't use the 'FR special' if possible. The drawbacks with a double locking trem is the setup and changing strings - both can take some more time compared to other system. The Gotho trem of that guitar together with the locking tuners is a pretty good compromise - the tuning stability is very good. Normally there's no need to retune the guitar after every song - otherwise something is wrong...

I did the swap yesterday and had the same problem you had. Upon more research it seems like Duncan has reversed the magnet in the neck pickup of the stock Hyperion which in my limited knowledge of pickups seems to be the issue. Someone said I could spin the whole pick up 180 degrees so the slug side would be north and screw side would be south.
