New Pickups For Blue Strat #1 [Mick's Strat Vlog] That Pedal Show

Музыка

Mick wires up new pickups for his American Vintage Strats… then briefly compares to an original 1961 Fender Strat.
Welcome! After being lucky enough to spend some quality time with some genuine 1960s Stratocasters, can I get my favourite 2001 Sonic Blue Strat to sound a bit more like the old ones?
I’ve got some Ron Ellis ’64 pickups and also some Fender Custom Shop Fat ’60s, and in this vlog I wire them up with Ellis pickups in Blue and the Custom Shop pickups in Transit Van (the black Strat).
Please note that I’m only talking about vintage-type spec. I have no idea about modern switches etc etc etc. Nor any interest, so apols if I don’t respond to questions on anything that isn't 'vintage' relevant. And…
• Why didn’t you try X pickups?
We all have to make a choice at some point. These are my choices - explained in the video. The rabbit hole is endless, and I’m already bored of it! Go to 20:05 in the vid.
• Why no grounding plate on the back of the pickguard?
a) Never had one. b) Didn’t buy any, but in future videos I will add them.
• Can you put the old pickups in the new guitar?
No. Please go to 15:05 in the video.
• What are the best pickups for my guitar?
With the very greatest of respect, I don’t know. Every guitar is different, every player is different, every rig is different. So many variables.

If you're interested in the mental health stuff, I added this in February 2022.
The books I talk about in this video are…
• The Power Of Now by Eckhart Tolle - all about rejecting psychological time, accepting what is and being present in the now, not constantly in the future and past.
• The Courage To Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga - a retelling of Adlerian psychology/philosophy. Not everyone likes you, so just get over it and stop worrying about it, basically.
• The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck by Mark Manson - if the above are too academic and 'heady', Manson basically says all the same stuff but in more contemporary language.
There are many more books out there. I’ve since done wider reading on logic, stoic philosophy and motivated reasoning/bias. All of it boils down to one basic thing: adjusting your perspective and getting out of your own compulsive thinking. Other routes to this path may work better for you, but these have changed my life beyond anything I could ever have imagined. No drugs, no doctors. Just the will to be free and at peace. Oh, and getting a spaniel. Everyone should have a spaniel. Ha!
Good luck!

Mick I’ve lived in the rabbit hole forever. I’ve owned 13 different Strats. Currently my #1 is a 2017 EJ with rosewood board. My #2 I built with a Fender body and big headstock Allparts all maple neck with a Mojotone loaded guard with Quietcoil 67’s. I’ve played for 40 yrs and been a guitar repairman for close to 30 yrs. No 1 Strat excels at everything to me. The EJ will be as close as I’ll ever get to a real 60’s Strat. Your blue Strat absolutely sings now! The smile on your face told the tale. It was so very close to the old Strat. This was a fantastic video. I’ve been down this path too many times but it’s fun. I wish you the best on your journey!

@@waxman9526 I have a klon clone I made myself and it does the same thing with a bunch of fuzz faces I also made myself and a strat with volume rolled down. In my opinion the secret lies on the bias of the fuzz faces (when they are biased too low they won't clean up at all) and the headroom, definition and dynamic range of the amp. Most klon clones will do their thing, only the ones with a "bass" mod, like the tumnus, won't help cleaning up the mud out of the fuzz.

That was like hanging with a good friend, talking guitar stuff. A couple of points I’d have put across had it not been a monologue: 1. The experiment is inherently flawed as when you pick up blue or the transit van it is to compare to the vintage one, and it seems that is on your mind rather than just enjoying playing. That said - and point no. 2 - a distinct grin comes across your face when you kick in the Klon on top of the fuzz while playing blue. Having followed TPS and the strat journey - that was a beautiful moment to behold. Keep this going Mick, it is an honour to be invited along for the ride!

Great job and playing Mick and reminds me of how fun it was to rewire my 60’s Player Strat. Got the guitar at a great price that had a lot of good things the Fender Custom Shop added to make it unique one of them being Custom 69’ pickups. The guitar sounded good out of the box but wanted the Jimi sound. Upon opening the guitar I was unhappy with the plastic wire they used and a few bad joints. I ripped the electronics out and put in good Fender vintage 250k pots, .01 uf cap, vintage cloth wiring and as you mentioned an aluminum pickgaurd shield which does help in high volume situations. I was pleasantly surprised with the results. I can get Jimi, Knopfler, and SRV tones. A fun and worthwhile project!!

If you play strats, you know, not all strats were created equal. It may seem like a chase for fools gold to go down this rabbit-hole, but once you're in the stratosphere, it's hard to escape. These varying elements Mick touches on encapsulate the nuance of a great stratocaster. It's a feel thing. It's a sound thing. It's a visual thing. All of those elements need to come together the right way, for the right person. I recently snagged a custom shop 1960 Relic RI in Candy apple with a matching headstock, it had Lollars installed and some added relicing done. I checks the boxes for me.. and that's what matters! Thanks Mick - this is awesome and brought some joy to my day. @That Pedal Show

This is fascinating Mick. I had a Strat journey myself about 5 years ago and the wild thing is that I ended up with the following: -62RI with Duncan pickups (A2 and A5, not antiquity) -John Mayer Strat (all stock) -Reverse headstock 69 style (same as yours!) with Fender CS69 pickups and upgraded hardware. I didn’t go down the rabbit hole of vintage reproduction parts, it’s all Fender issue stuff. I’ve always loved the sound of Blue, I’ve been itching to swap from the standard a Duncan’s to the Antiquity Texas Hots for that reason! Best of luck on your journey, in the end I hope it ends up at a point that you make even more great music!

Yarp. That's my rabbit hole. Been a Strat addict/modder since '95. Spent years Frankensteining them to come back to wanting my '91 Japanese 50's reissue to sound as vintage spec as possible. Went with a current Davey Gilmour setup consisting of a Fat 50's neck, CS '69 middle, and a SSL-5 in the bridge(that I'm actually quite a sucker for!) Made the mistake of playing a Nash S 63 a few times and have become convinced in my head the Lollers in it are the way to go, but now those Ron Ellis '64s are going to haunt me. Thanks ever so much, Mick, for just blowing up my recent facade of Strat-suredness! My wallet is greatly displeased!

Mick, I can't think of anything more important than the amazing, uncontrollable, childlike smile that comes across your face not long after 36:00. Flashes at first, then full on joy of getting to know an old friend in a new way. Better questions indeed. If the point is feel, and emotional connection, well, there's one window to that very thing. I thought the playing was absolutely brilliant, and then you started to feel it, and it got better. (yes, better). If one is to head down a rabbit hole, that feeling is a pretty wonderful prize along the way.

Hey Mick, talking about feel in playing, especially with gear in mind: I tend to think about it like using a pencil to write, a wrench to turn, or a chainsaw to cut. if the tool is working properly, you are connected with what youre doing. if the pencil lead breaks or the chainsaw sputters, you are no longer in the moment with your task/inspiration. so we choose gear that best connects us to the sound, giving a good feel. a good guitar is the start of that chain. cheers!

This was fantastic. You really articulated the issue around the concept/fallacy of "the best" really well. I'm an active member on a few music/guitar/recording forums and everyday there is someone posting the question of "What's the best X for Y." It's such a subjective concept, and it's hard to convince people that "the best" will change depending on the room, the day, the weather, the strings, the amp, the cable, the speakers, the mic, the interface, the phases of the moon, and finally.... WHO is listening. Really enjoyed going on this journey with you.

This was great! I now see why I could have multiple Stratocasters in my life. For me, watching this, I felt like, I’m always hearing Mick Taylor, regardless of which Stratocaster you are playing. However, just as each human being is a complex multifaceted emotional entity, that is difficult to convey in one singular way, it’s why we have different tools for different jobs. Each guitar helps bring out more or less of a certain emotion. As I said, one guitar might bring out the more stinging direct cutting version of Mick, while the other is better suited to the mellower introspective version. It’s funny how I use the word “suited” because a guitar is like a piece of clothing. People use clothing to help them express visually to the world how they are feeling that day. In the same way, you can choose the guitar (even if it is the same make and model, but with different woods and appointments that make it sound different) to better express aurally how you are feeling.

I have found through experimentation that those big 60- style aluminum shield plates make a huge tonal difference--it's like rolling off your tone knob one or two ticks. The smaller 50s style (which only shield the pots and switch) take away fewer highs (and noise). I think this is one of the reasons (among others) that 60s Strats tend to be darker than those from 50s even with underwound pickups. Sometime in the late 60s, Fender got rid of the big shields and used the foil sticker type, which I think contributes some to the brightness of late 60s/70s Strats.

  • @ThatPedalShow

    @ThatPedalShow

Very interesting Kenneth, thank you. I think Blue might benefit from a shield. I’ll try that down the line. I’m also hearing that values closer to 300k for the pots wasn’t uncommon. So a little more from the pots, and little less from the guard. And on it goes! Hahahaha

Strat fan to another, it is quite easy to recognise that when you play: whoever picks a Strat and runs it through a Fuzz Face instantly takes part in a historical flow, which is of course greater then our own selves. You know how it blows our minds every time we plug and hear it, along decades. This could sound a bit mystical, but it is naturally just culture, education, habits, memory, sensibility, preferences etc. All of that to suggest you should absolutely try the set of signature pickups Seymour Duncan claims to have fairly reproduced from his experience hand wounding himself customised pickups for Jimi Hendrix. I believe they should be at least a flavoursome step in this inspiring Strat quest of yours. I know you want to try it. You know it too. And Dr. Freud certainly knows it as well… why else would you stick that Fuzz Face there as the first dirty sound you tried? After all, Hendrix is the common link between you, King Mansa Kankan Musa and King Arthur. That is why every Strat is a potential mix between Orpheus Lyre and Excalibur. Awesome job with the Strat Vlog, looking forward to the next one! Cheers!

tip: use a hotter soldering iron. especially for the back of pots. when you run hotter and shorter, you put less heat into the components and the solder flows better. the look on your face says you did good. they were all good. for me - blue on the day but vintage on the fuzz show was.... sounds: the black one seemed a bit tighter than vintage, perhaps had a slightly more prevalent mid.. blue was sweeter than black but all were great and very close. thanks and remember "just for today"

I think the smile on your face as you turn up the volume knob on blue and hear the fuzz kick in says absolute volumes honestly :-) AB testing will definitely send you insane though. You will notice subtleties (that are there) that if you picked guitar B up alone you would never worry about. Without wanting to sound facetious, if wood, saddles and so on make a difference (I'm certain they do) surely the effect of sitting with guitar resting on your thigh is going to be different to standing with a strap? So for a performance player, shouldn't that matter? Also, one thing that rarely gets mentioned... Nut material. While strings aren't fixed to it like the saddle or machine heads, it's definitely impacting string vibration. Extremes of brass and steel vs bone and plastic make pretty clear differences to tone and sustain. Anyway, was genuinely glad to see that genuine smile while playing. Stay happy and keep the journey going!

  • @ThatPedalShow

    @ThatPedalShow

    4 жыл бұрын

Totally agree. But you still feel the guitar vibrating when standing. Through your hands and arms for a start. But the connection is about more than the physical connection of the guitar. 100dB of amp you feel pretty strongly, and that’s all different from guitar to guitar too. Endlessly fascinating!
