Love this video, my favorite! His balloon under his Fathers and Mothers umbrellas, parents. Then under the nuns umbrella, religion. Then policemen on horses, law and order. Then his umbrella going to the little girl and hers doing the same, relationships. Then the balloons (our souls) flying away losing our childhood. Then the end, all of the balloons taking him away. Life!

Just popped into my head this seems to have a similar theme as Love will Tear us Apart of cycles repeating themselves in a relationship where that one lacked any hope this seems to have been more about breaking that cycle once and for all. Maybe Ian Curtis had real hope or was committed to his own demise. The arc of Joy Division into New Order is encapsulated in this song,

IDK ITS SUCH A MASTERPIECE
Love the french film boy with the red balloon beautiful
Just brings tears to my eyes...and yet I love it.
I think the balloons represent the heart / joy of one’s life and sometimes others wish to take that joy from us. Is best if we let it go when we need to move on, because that joy will always comes back as it is shared with others.
wow.... This is a powerful lyric video. The choice of Red Balloon for the footage fits Ceremony like a glove. You have my respect and my congratulations for creating a stupefying masterpiece. Brava!

Great song :)
jeez! that video I am sure it is one I saw as a child in the early 70s it always stuck in my mind I was both fascinated and scared by it would love to know who it was by and when it was shown on tv I have never forgotten it even in adulthood! boy oh boy, how France has changed since then I bet loads of people would love to be taken away like that little boy!
I'd love Ian's vocals finished to this masterpiece
Should i ever tie the knot, i will be having this playing in the background :)

a world without balloons, is a world with no hope.
Ce son est une légèreté et une
Great video they should show the red balloon in more classrooms
le Ballon rouge mixed with New Order ceremony. Well done
Is the red balloon ( Ian Curtis) . That one I am looking at it. That red balloon represent many thing in my eyes.

Ah, the beautiful Montmartre!
This song is killing my soul
I've never seen this. Thought I saw every version, including Radiohead and now Echo and the Bunnymen. This is certainly one of NO's best songs, and JD's.
I hope that kid is safe
I heard ceremony in 82 in my as a teenager at college in Wellington such a beautiful piece , How I was so disillusioned' with New Order seeing them live' at the Varsity Hop that year, coming on late with poor sound quality. However this video is 'stunning' appears to be kodak chromed' as the footage is from the late 5o's early 60's in Paris.

It's footage from the 1956 movie The Red Balloon ,Great short film!
Wow....takes me back to sophomore year in HS. What a beautiful song
Just popped into my head this seems to have a similar theme as Love will Tear us Apart of cycles repeating themselves in a relationship where that one lacked any hope this seems to have been more about breaking that cycle once and for all. Maybe Ian Curtis had real hope or was committed to his own demise. The arc of Joy Division into New Order is encapsulated in this song,
maybe we all need those little hope balloons.
Mon oncle
Where was this video recorded/shot???
Love this song and video. What does it mean to you?
I can seen this song like a chidhood dream
Brilliant song. Great video. Not quite sure what they have to do with each other, though. :) Still, I enjoyed it.

You were assigned to the short bus as a child. It's blatantly obvious.
Being an idiot, I thought the guy cleaning the window was actually outside, just waving like a madman.
Love this song! Some of the best lyrics ever. What do the balloons represent?

To me, the balloons represent childhood innocence, curiosity, and the desire for friendship but it's all open to interpretation of course!
