NEW Northern Class 195 - THE PACER REPLACEMENT - Standard Class Review (Liverpool to Manchester)

Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report on my channel! For this week's video I will be travelling with Northern, and on one of their brand-new Class 195 'Civity UK' units from CAF. These diesel units are best known for being the replacement of the infamous Class 142 'Pacer' railbuses.
The trains are a vast step up from the Class 142/150/153/155/156 units which they replace, thanks to their clean and spacious interiors, welcoming design, greatly enhanced accessibility, air conditioning, and of course the fact that they aren't based on a Leyland National Bus!
Today's route starts in Liverpool Lime Street, before a quick ride to Liverpool South Parkway, an interchange for the airport. After this we turn past Allerton depot, before running to Warrington, then into the highly congested Manchester Piccadilly through platforms.
Learn more about the experience on these new trains for Northern in this latest video on my channel.

    Pacers probably ok in their place and doing what they were designed to do, but sloggin over parts of the north that should have been electrified 20 years ago was not really the design they were for. it was littlish routes like Doncaster-Hull or York-Sheffield stopping locals ,. effectively the bus journeys on rail. they were used too much, and filled with too many commuters and shoppers.

    @@highpath4776 The pacers were also proven over the long run not the temporary stopgap it was claimed they would be in the 1980's when they first went into service. The claim was made when the railways were still nationalised. Then the railways were privatised mid 1990's and suddenly everything changed and the Pacers were no longer just a temporary stopgap and were suddenly intended to get replaced over the same timescale as all other trains in the UK. Problem was that the Pacers were introduced in Northern in the 1980's unlike other parts of the UK where 1st generation mark 1 trains from the late 1950's and the 1960's needed to be replaced by more new trains. But the 1st generation mark 1 trains were not earmarked to go to Northern to replace then the Pacers because replacing newer trains with older ones especially as they were all slam door trains, and the newer trains from elsewhere in the UK than the Pacers were never going to be cascaded to Northern that soon. The fact that Northern were one of the first to have their first generation mark 1 trains replaced meant a hell of a long wait for better rolling stock to come to Northern to replace tye clearly substandard Pacers. But as I say come 1996 it was a privatised rail system which meant Northern having to wait their turn for replacement for their Pacers no matter how terrible they were. You could have put tram trains on the old branch lines if they were electrified 20 years ago.

    Having ridden these around the North West on several occasions now, the 195s are a total breath of fresh air. The Pacers long ago were obsolete and whilst the Sprinters themselves weren’t bad by any means, the North really did deserve to have newer trains, which thankfully they do now.

  • @DougPaulley

    @DougPaulley

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@buksi6342 yes, they were/are utterly terrible and a disgrace accessibility wise. 1) no accessible toilet. Particularly problematic for long journeys, e.g. Morecambe to Leeds. 2) two massive steps, resulting in steep ramps or having to put down two separate ramp sections, big difficulty pushing up etc. (Actually the 144s were worse than the 142s, paradoxically, because the shallower 2nd step meant that it wasn't possible to put the ramp directly from the platform to the 2nd step...) 3) poorly defined "multi- purpose areas" for bikes, pushchairs, prams, people 4) no carer / companion seats 5) freezing, next to the doors which let in lots of cold air even when they were shut A true disgrace and active impediment to wheelchair user travel.

I don't mean to be impertinent - it's none of my business, after all - but it would have been helpful to know if the under-seat space would have been cramped for the average passenger. I'm 5' 6" - hardly a giant. Are the seats set up for the typical person of 5' 9" or so? I know next to nothing about rail matters and can't afford to travel by train anyway (I ride an old bike worth £35!), so I'm not qualified to make suggestions about future journeys or reviews. Having said that, it was nice to get out and about vicariously, so do please keep the videos coming. :-)

    I've had these a few times now between Manchester/Leeds and, while they are certainly better than the Pacers (as are most things) I do not rate them at all as new train. The ride quality is hard as nails and there is constant banging and clonking sound coming from the bogies even at moderate speed (you can hear some of that in this video). Going over points at speed makes the whole coach shudder and rattle violently. Personally I find the seats to be very uncomfortable and I finish the journey with lower back ache, though I am 6'2 so it might not be so bad for shorter people? The bin provision is also totally inadequate (very hard to find an minuscule when you eventually do!) Overall I find the class 158 is far more comfortable and pleasant to travel on despite being 30+ years old. I am certainly glad to see the back of the Pacers (and not a minute before time either!) but these could have been made much better with just some decent seat cushioning and a more forgiving suspension.

    Completely agree - the ride quality of the 195's is far too harsh. My least favourite of the recent modern trains introduced in the UK - Whiny engines and rattley suspension. The 755's over in Anglia on the other hand - in my opinion are superior to these in every way. It's a shame the West Midlands and Welsh franchises are opting for so many CAF units too.

    I agree with your comments about the seats, although having a 2 + 2 seating layout is definitely an improvement. What I detest though is the (over loud) automatic announcement system with its 4 different voices. I travel 5 days a week between Doncaster & Leeds on Northern's class 331 EMU's (the electric version of the 195's) and recently counted 40 announcements during the journey: an average of one announcement each minute! Far too many

    I really like the 195s and 331s. I’ve been on quite a few of these (before lockdown) on this line, and they are definitely better than the Class 142s and 150s. However there are too many issues with them for such a modern train. I’m not sure if they’re really any better than the refurbished 156s that also service that line. The 156s have more space as they are often a double unit (4 cars) as opposed to a single (3 car) unit, both are about as comfy, the 156s are more reliable, but the 195s are faster; it takes 12 mins to get from MCO to BWD (express) on a 195 compared to 15 mins on a 156 and 16 mins on a 150. The other stops are less noticeable difference because they’re closer together.

    Class 156s do not have more space. Class 195 is a 3 car train and class 156 is a 2 car train. If you want to compare trains use 3 car Class 150 or Class 158.

If they had the foresight (questionable thought it may be) to order bi-mode units to future-proof their fleet _even though most of them operate on lines that have no realistic prospect of being electrified in the next 20 years or more_ then it really shouldn't have been beyond the wit of Arriva/DfT to figure out that for a network that *was* being increasingly electrified and has great potential for much further electrification, bi-mode would be the way to go. When Arriva chose the Civity because they could buy identical diesel and electric versions, that really should have given the game away, when they could have bought the FLIRT and the trains wouldn't have been identical, they would have been the same actual train!

FYI if you booked in advance with a railcard, you can get take that exact trip for £2.15. Regarding your price per mile. Most High speed services if you are paying the anytime ticket usually works out around around 60p- £1 per mile. example Lime street to euston £110 for 177 miles. Looking 2 weeks out that service is under £3 with no rail card or £4.10 with no Railcard for tomorrow, which is decent. You're right the price is high, but it's reflective of a walk up fare anywhere in the country (unless in a single subsidised region like Merseyside). For a comparison a walk up single from Leeds to York is £16.60 and that's for a 23 minute journey. That's not a criticism, just an observation of the pricing comment. Keep up the great videos 😊
