I was fourteen when I watched one of my Dad's mate's videos taped off tv music shows. He wrote the names of the songs and artists and timings as well. Except for a question mark in the middle. I had to know what it was so i fast-forwarded to it out of curiosity and New Model Army played a 3 song set of Christian Militia, Smalltown England and one other song. I was hooked from that day and bought Vengeance immediately and No Rest For The Wicked soon after. They changed my life.

@@HobosCrafting Killing Joke stylistically similar? I don't think so. If somebody wants to listen to similar NMA music they should look for Midnight Oil. And maybe U2, but only the years 1980 - 1987. Because Killing Joke never made long, narrative lyrics and their music sounded rather dark/goth. The songs of Midnight Oil and New Model Army can be played in everyday radio programme, Killing Joke songs not. [By the way, if you've never heard them and click trough their music on youtube: Midnight Oil changed their style very often: from 1978 - 1981 it was punk-rock (Album Head injuries, Midnight Oil, Place without a postcard), from 1982 - 1984 it was pop-rock with 80ies synthsounds (albums 10,9,8 and Red sails in the sunset), from 1987 - 1996 it was clean pop-rock without synthsounds (Diesel & Dust, Blue Sky Mining, Breathe, Earth& Sun), in 1998 with typical 90ies synthsounds (Redneck Wonderland) and in 2002 back to typical Midnight Oil tunes with Capricornia ]

@@flotteluft There are KJ songs that are radio friendly, Love Like Blood for example, though that is the only one you're likely to hear, unless you listen to BBC Radio 6 Music, which is actually the only place I've heard NMA on the radio, whereas I've heard KJ on a coupla different stations. And KJ is another band that changed their sound down the years, compare Brighter Than a Thousand Suns to Extremities, Dirt and Various Repressed Emotions(they like long album names btw), they barely sound like the same band. I do agree with you though that they're not really that similar, except the somewhat cynical lyrics.

No Rest and Vengeance.. favourite NMA albums. But this one tops it all. ❤ "Enemies with horns and tails".. What a farce indeed. Great song writing..and stonkingly good bass lines! As relevant today as when we first listened to it as teenagers in the 80s.

Made the mistake of standing at the front with a full pint just before the band came on at Leeds university in 1984. They started off with Vengeance and my pint was soon all over me. I quickly took refuge on the PA stack. Still I got another few in....

I'm told the bassist pretty much bowed out of the music scene soon after all this stuff was recorded. What a bastard shame, because he was phenomenal.
