Not sure I could ever get used to that dashboard and nearly everything being touch or voice controlled.Does not look like a £42k car. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for an excellent review of the new Mini electric, but I will be keeping my 2023 Mini electric especially since I have done a bunch of suspension modifications and added a big brake kit, she is a much better car. I am getting between 125 and 150 miles, I can live with that.

Nice watch thanks Henry, as I suspected from a Chinese build, no huge wow factor but good driving software. The F56 is a quality car, the controls feel quality, whereas China built cars such as the BMW iX1 I recently drive all make that big mistake of having cheap feel to switchgear and dash switches.

Thanks for sharing your impressions. I bought a used F56 Cooper SE (2020) a few months ago, my previous car has been an R55. While I really like my new SE, I can't help but being underwhelmed with the new J01 electric Cooper. Personally I liked the more or less cluttered cab with all those buttons, knobs and switches, the new interior looks kind of bland. If the few remaining toggles and switches are as cheap as you mentioned, it would be quite a disappointment. I am also not too fond about the exterior design, especially the rear of the car.

I drove the new electric Cooper last Saturday - the same as the model in the video - I thought it was quite quick and enjoyed it. However, I do know what you mean about the torque steer when you put your foot down. My only real bug-bear was the material on the doors where you put your elbow (I was also a passenger a one point as have been out in it twice) is incredibly rough and hard to the point of being almost like sandpaper on your skin. Probably OK if you have long sleeves on but not ideal if you are in a T-shirt. Apart from that I really liked it and can’t wait for ours to arrive in early June 😊

Had the previous generation for 3y, never managed to have more than 126 miles range after charging. Great look, very good city car and frugal in traffic with the regen, but the range was just too low for me.

How was the leg-feel of that center console? It looks like its corner kinda stabs you at the knee.

Thanks for the amazing review! How much more quiet is it (road noise, wind etc.). Also, are the driving assistant features much better than in the f56?

I wouldn't say it's apreciatably any more quiet than the F56. Regarding the driving assistant features, it is a big leap forward over the F56 for sure - The ACC + lane keep worked very well on the motorway, a less sure footed on single carriageways, but overall a good implementation of "self driving" functionality. My biggest gripe with the system is that the adjustment for the ACC follow distance is now a setting via the touch screen, whereas on the F56 optioned with ACC (any many other cars with ACC) you can adjust this via the steering wheel.

I kind of feel these ev's are built under the thinking we have a booming economy, who can afford a c£40k city car? This is Model 3 money.

Trouble is your driving a £42k MINI that’s not a GP or Works. The fact they have held back the performance to leave a gap for a future works is disappointing. 0-62 being 6.7 seconds today not great. We have had five petrol in a hatch and Clubbie two currently on the drive and this car needed to be £10k cheaper and another 50 miles range. New Renault 5 calls more to me on looks. I’ve sat in this Car but not driven although I was invited. Volvo EX30 leaves this for dust not that performance is everything. Interesting your thought when you have owned the last gen Mini electric because I never even tried it as 120 real world range didn’t interest me. I’ll probably wait till buttons come into fashion again. I was one of the first F56 owners on U.K. roads back in April 2014, in fact it’s the same car still on the drive factory ordered and it was a mess it was in 18 times for fixes and faults and spent a month waiting for parts at the dealers while I had a five series loan Car. I’ve still got it because I like the way it drives on road trips and holidays. It’s on low miles for age but when it does get used it can go 400 miles in a day. Getting to Duxford from Glasgow would be interesting in this new EV that’s for sure.

For the record, I’ve driven my F56 Electric to Edinburgh from London in a day with no issues, the “short” range perfectly aligned with your requisite rest stops. I’ve also test driven the EX30, and while especially in dual motor form it would leave J01 in the dust on paper, it’s still a sort of crossover. Plus the minimalist interior is probably even less ergonomic or easy to use than the MINI or even a Tesla - Very un-volvo.

If it were an honest 6.7 to 100kph (not a sandbagged one), then it will be slower than the current SE which is 6.6 to 100kph *as tested*. The 0-60 is 6 flat, with that silly US 1ft rollout (so about 6.3s). It also looks like it doesn't benefit from the trick traction control of the current SE. Oh well. Thanks for the honest review - I will be keeping my 2020 SE.
