New Mexico State Parks: Heron Lake Tour

Heron Lake is located in Northern New Mexico just 25 miles South of the Colorado Border and is one of New Mexico’s state parks- a no-wake lake at 7167' elevation.
Heron Lake State Park is one of our favorite places to camp in the state. We'll visit several of the Lake's campgrounds that line the shore of this scenic lake as well as check out the current state of the Rio Chama Trail.
When we visited in June of 2023, the campsites had no running water to the restrooms, with only water available at the visitors center.

What a lovely and peaceful place to camp! Always thought New Mexico had bit more of a desert arid-like landscape, but this looks much more lush!

What a beautiful lake. I would also be terrified of a mountain lion too haha. Its cool that there are so many different campsites along the lake. xx

Beautiful country, thanks for taking us along. Of note; the lake used to have a population of freshwater kokanee salmon, not sure if the are still there.

We stayed there in October of 2021. The lake was barely a river. Looks like last years snow and rain has helped with the water levels

Thank you for this video! Heron is my all time favorite lake. Went sailing there when I was in high school (early 80's) and I took my kids camping there every year until they graduated. I moved to Utah, so I haven't been back since about 2014. I'm headed to Albuquerque to visit family and my greatest wish is to see Heron again. I'm so sad that the water level had dropped so much. In the 80's the water was nearly up to the campground at Brushy Point! Are the showers and restrooms closed due to the lack of water? I wonder if anyone can convince someone in charge in the state of NM to place an emphasis on this lake. It is the most beautiful in the entire state. I understand that the water is needed for crops and to supply Albuquerque with water, but it is such a shame.

Yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed this! We love Heron Lake. The first time we went there we brought a kayak and were disappointed at the long walk to the water from the campsite, based on some old photos I had seen. I hope the water levels start to improve. That particular bathroom was closed because the water was off, but we had vault toilets at our campground.

@@SwiftyTravels The last time I camped there, I went by myself! I had two cocker spaniels at the time and I put them both on my kayak with their doggy life vests and we kayaked to the island! I bet it would short trip now. Fingers crossed that we all get another good snow pack year this winter. Utah needs it, too!
