New Mercedes CLE Coupe Review: Benz at its Best?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Mercedes-Benz CLE is an all-new coupe for 2024 that takes over the roles of the previous C-Class coupe and E-Class coupe. A CLE Convertible is also offered, but our focus in this CarGurus review is the Coupe, and specifically in C300 4Matic guise.
This 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit is one of a range of petrol and diesel engines available in the CLE, and as Chris Knapman finds out, it might also be the best.

    It's basically an overpriced 2 door C Class. Having a 6 cylinder doesn't make it any more E than it is C. The C Class should have a 6 cylinder anyway like they always did up until the W205 models. Back in the day there was a lovely C240 with a leisurely V6. It wasn't fast but it was oh so refined and sounded great. So a 6 cylinder should actually be a given even in a C Class. So it remains that there is absolutely no E about this CLE and Mercedes profits on this car must be astronomical. The plastics is unacceptable at this price. This brand is losing customers fast and have lost my decades long loyalty. It's just annoying now. There's not a single desirable Mercedes anymore because I'm so aware how badly and cheaply they're made these days. In the past you paid for the best quality. The solidity. Not anymore.

    Basically it’s a clever ruse from Mercedes to build a C Class Coupe, pretend it’s covering the E Class as well, then charge more money…. It’s a C Class Coupe, adding the letter ‘E’ to the model designation doesn’t change that. Adding an E Class interior, certainly would.

    The C class interior is not even close to befitting of a Mercedes, never mind any car over $30,000. The fact that this does not have upgraded materials over the C class is even more of a crime. I appreciate that this is longer than the C class, but marketing it as a replacement for the E coupe is misleading. Nothing that looks like metal or wood is real. There’s too much hard plastic and it suffers from the same issues as all other new benzes - capacitive touch and piano black. Yes, it gets 6cyl and new seats. Thats not good enough. It should have a bespoke interior commensurate with the price and position. I would settle for the 214 E class interior. It should not have B pillars, but looks nice and probably drives well. But as a current e-coupe customer, I would never get this. Its very frustrating.

    3:15 Does anyone know if this has been addressed at all?: I had a 2013 E coupe back in, well, 2013. My son, then 4yo, was getting out of the back seat, and in trying to get out, he pulled on the front seat that was tilted forward. The seat then started to mechanically move back (like this seat does here). His head got wedged between the seatback and the door jamb squeezing him causing him to scream. The seat did not stop at all! If I had not heard him and ran over to get the seatback moved forward again as quick as I did (I wasn't that far away), I don't know what would have happened. There were no sensors in the seat mechanism to know if something - or someone!! - was there blocking it and therefore telling it to stop moving back. Are there now sensors in the seats that detect an obstruction? I have not been in a Mercedes coupe since to know.

  • @DiamondarBoss

    @DiamondarBoss

    20” wheels? That must be a lovely ride. I’m amazed that carmakers charge more for a harsher, worse ride. “Hey, wanna feel every bump in the road and have a terrible ride? Pay us another $2000 and you’ll have it.” 🤣 The contra argument is that bigger wheels look better. As if you park your car in the living room and simply look at it. 😂🙄

    Mercedes interiors are just dire. They are either way over the top bling or dull with iffy plastics. They are not the luxury car brand they once were. There coupes use to be the pinnacle of luxury in the late 80s and 90s with rock solid luxury interiors. Brands like Mazda and Kia are producing better quality.

    I think it's too big. I wish Mercedes had made the CLE dimensions fit in between the C and E-Class. And they should have kept the E-Class's interior. Or just kept the C-Class's interior, which is better than this CLE's. Oh well. There's still the Audi S5 Coupe.

    The CLK 209 ( 2003 to 2009) is a pillarless coupe. It also had its own unique interior , a level above the C Class of the time , more in line with the E Class. This CLE is a hark back to the launch of the CLK 208 ( it too had a B pillar) . Let’s hope the next CLE has no B pillar and that it has a unique interior. This car is a let down for the price .

    I got one of the last AMG S63 Cabrios a few years ago. This CLE and MB's other recent moves are making me think it will be my last Merc. I will keep that car forever because it is truly special, the old-school, over-engineered, high quality material Benz of old. And when I am ready to add another car to the stable it will most likely be a Porsche. Their interior design remains very interesting/exciting and quality. Merc have mostly lost their way in interior design, looking like a bunch of googly-eyed (screens) techno-jumble. The Mercs of my youth and early career had very clean, elegant interiors. From reading a lot of these comments, I would say that is what most of us still want today (even folks one and two generations younger than me). And how long will it take manufacturer to realize that we all hate piano black (unless it is on a Yamaha baby grand piano). Please give us knobs back - how on earth are the government agencies approving tech that forces significant focus away from the road to push buttons/sliders on ipad-like screens!

I have a 4 bed house , my water is heated by immersion tank . I rest dishwasher and my washing machine to run in the early hours of the morning , taking full advantage of the cheaper rates . I am charging my car every night. My electricity bill monthly is around £270. That is not a rip off at all. My diesel bill used to be £450 a month ( doing 3000 miles per month) EV is definitely the way to go .
