New Mega Mansions in Prashad Nagar Georgetown Guyana

Ойын-сауық

Developer of Prashad Nagar, Hari Prashad (Horizons, Issue 17, 2012)
It was a wide, flat and abandoned rice field when, in the late 1950s, real estate developer Hari Prashad purchased just over 76 acres put up for sale by then British Guiana conglomerate Bookers, in an area called Bel Air, which was then mainly rice fields owned by Bel Air Estates Ltd.
The land, known then as “area H”, was bordered by Bel Voir Court to the north; a reserve between the land and Campbelville to the west, by Sophia to the east, and Cummings Canal to the south. It has since become known as one of the country’s oldest premier housing schemes: Prashad Nagar.
Hari Prashad decided to turn the former rice land into a housing estate which he named Prashad Nagar; Prashad, his family name, and ‘Nagar’, a Hindi word that means a city, town, division or district. Its streets were named after either family members or friends of Hari Prashad, or places in, or references to India; a reflection of his brief sojourn to that country in the early 1950s and his close ties to his culture.

0:37 They make metal roofing shingles to look like clay. So it might not be ceramic. I'm writing from Trinidad btw. And new options for roofing have come on the market in the past decade or so. When it comes time to change out the corrugated galvanise, some homeowners are moving over to the new materials. So you see more variety nowadays.

5:20 Our enclosed carport did not originally come with a garage door. It was open like this one. It now does because of crime. We don't have the automatic ones - because that wasn't really an option at the time. Instead, we had a wrought-iron gate installed as most of our neighbors now do. Our front gate has also been upgraded from the regular ones that you open by hand, to an automatic sliding one that you use a remote. Primarily because it is handy to be able to open the gate when it is raining and secondly - again crime. People have been robbed when coming out of the car to open the gate. Now automatic gates aren't 100% foolproof but it shortens the time that you are vulnerable. When the day comes that we decide to change out the garage gate, we might think about installing the automatic doors there too. Sorry to have to tell you this, but as Guyana's economic fortunes rise because of the oil industry, these are things that you all are going to have think about. Mady from Trinidad. Edit: 7:25 I see that some people have entered the razor wire phase already. The new thing over here, is spikes.

6:19 A/c costs a lot of money on your electric bill - so just remember that. Of course, you can sleep in comfort when it is hot and humid but just remember that you have to pay for it.

FYI, I lived in Prashad Nagar in the late 60s and we had an indoor kitchen and all the houses built in Guyana -always have a verandah. Don't know what generation you are from; please do proper research before giving misleading information.

4:32 When people were cooking on coal pots and clay firesides with wood or coal, it was in fact necessary to have your kitchen separate to the house to keep soot out. This was more about necessity than aesthetics. But if people are now cooking with gas or electric, why do you still want the kitchen outdoors? It would be like wanting an outhouse even though you also have indoor plumbing. lol.

I think it has to do with heat. Keeping the heat from the stove from the rest of the house is important in tropical climates. They do the same in Singapore and Malaysia which are also located at the equator.

All I see is they are building a lot of North American houses that are square with no style and poor air flow that's why they have to air condition them because they have no natural air flow which results in high electricity bill...
