The Mako Shark came together relatively quickly and although there isn’t a full build series like the SLUG SHARK original class 11 build, we wanted to share some of the highlighted build points that made her first outing hugely successful. Back to the Mako Sharks partnered components that made this happen! Almost all the parts are the same as the Slug Shark which have been proven for 48 consecutive races with ZERO DNF’s to date!
Tons of Empi Inc parts everywhere! Their catalog has a vast amount of part used front to back on both cars. Brakes, engine parts, shifter, cv’s and axles, door components, bumpers etc etc it’s a long list!
Sletten Engineering cage kit and beam work using all Industrial Metal Supply 4130 and low comp 1600 racing engine, A-1 exhaust system.
King Shocks that make these sharks smooth!
PRP x Shreddy Collab Seats, harness, steering wheel and quick release as well as window nets.
Rugged radios SC set up and fresh air system.
Full throttle battery that always keeps us juiced up and the Switch Pro switch pannel fired up.
Baja designs front lights, rear tail light and dome light.
ATL fuel cell that has slosh baffles which Kevin designed a badas mount or the car with Quantum Fuel System filter.

I built my first class 11 in my garage in 1995 for score rules. We only ran the Laughlin desert challenge each year and then ran 5 seasons on MDR up north. Most sanctions would not allow what you’ve built. Ours had to look completely stock. We didn’t pass tech once because we had our air filter too far outside the rear window. We were MDR class champions in 2000! When I retire, I’m applying for a job with you. I live right down the street from your shop!

Nice insider look. Thanks for sharing. Hope the boys in Oklahoma see this. Was able to co pilot in a Class 11, the first lap of a four lap race, with my Ensenada based brother in law. Team took 2nd in class. I don’t know the particulars but I believe he had bent the rules somehow gaining 3” length-wise? You could sit a glass of water on his balanced/blueprinted 1600 and not get a ripple. It was one of my life’s best times. Shred on!

ive always wanted to baja a veloster or juke, some other hatch kinda body style, if it were a veloster i wanted to throw the engine in the back. feel like that would be a cool build

For the short course races, is your co-driver using comms as well? Do they use the Rugged handhelds in tandem with yours?

I like seeing detailed VW builds. Been ten plus years but I'm finally starting the 56 oval window Baja build, supposed to be for my son but plans change ya know m 🤷🏼♂️🫤 Got a 2180 & dune buggy to use as a donor
