What about the lens hood on the mark III? Same as before? The lens hood attachement is/was very weak and certainly not up to Leica specs. I much prefer a lens hood with a release button...

@alonzojtech6198 it came out in Feb 2023, at the time it was assumed that it would be named mkiii, but it's now just the Leica branded update of this line of lenses. You can tell it's the new version because it says Leica on the top arch of the lens, where it previously said Lumix G.

I had the original 12-35mm lens. I used it first on my GH4 as I needed a general zoom lens with IS, then used it for a short while on my GH5, but the only thing I didn't like was that it had more noticable soft edges at wide angles and I was taking a lot of landscape photos and videos where the edge softness was noticeable to me. I switched to a Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO lens as I didn't need IS due to the very good IBIS on the GH5 and it was sharper corner to corner. On my GH6, the Olympus lens was a bit soft.

That looks like one humdinger of a lens. Those early lumix lenses were always impressive. I have a 14-45 'kit' lens in my bag that I still use regularly. It stands comparison to the Olympus 12-40, which is pretty extraordinary really, for a lens that's over 10 years old! Keep up the good work 🙂

Not sure why you want PDAF when DFD is still quicker. Why because PDAF produces two directions for focus shift, it knows how far but not which way, hence it always hunts. It has to hunt to figure out which way to go. Yes you do have to use the right "Custom Focus Mode" for DFD when using AFC/AFF or video. This is a vast improvement over the first DFD (Lumix G7) that gave you no options. There's an "AF Guide Book" for that. With that set correctly for the job the video focus/refocus is nearly instantaneous. For fastest operation turn recognition off (it will try to stay with a "face") and aim the camera. Recognition uses a form of tracking, it will try to stay with the actor and follow-focus there. What finalises and locks the focus is always the CDAF (all PDAF cameras use CDAF to do this). And I'm struggling to understand how AF would work if it was not focus by wire; the camera body does the focusing and tells the lens to move. You want a fabulous AF system, which we've got, and them just use the MF? Use a manual focus lens.

Nice update! Great lenses all 3!. But I would like to see a Lumix 25mm f1.2 lens for the Line Up. It's will be great, I think. M43 is a tiny sensor, so I think only 5 things can help to deal with that: 1) Dual ISO Native 800 / 4000 2) Faster electronic lenses, Aperture f1.2 & f0.95 (10mm, 12mm, 17mm, 25mm, *42,5mm, 75mm). 3) 15+ Stop (or 14+) Dynamic Range. 4) Tiny Body or Pocket Size Body (as Gh2, G8 & G7 series). 5) Cheap Price. (Flagshig Model as Gh6/(Gh7) under $1500; ando other midle rang models under $1000 with 4k video with 10-bit 422 color Internaly). That was the spirit of M43 System at the beginning: "Tiny, Cheap, Capable & Affordable lenses"

Not entirely sure what the Pana Leica moniker is doing on it, the base lens is a staple in the M43 multiverse, and this one is its third version. The second one added dual IS and cold proofing to the weatherproofing on the MkI. As far as I have found, there isnt much more to it, other than the coating, than it has gotten the Panasonic-Leica branding instead of the Lumix. Going by memory, the MkII also got a coating upgrade as well as Power OIS and upgraded Dual IS. having used the MkII quite a bit, I haven't noticed any excessive flaring. The first version was branded Lumix X along with the 35-100 and the PZ 14-42 and 45-175, the X marking was the "pro/high-end set" in the Lumix line-up, which switched to Panasonic Leica somewhere down the line. I have the MkII version of it and its 35-100 stablemate, those two are not going anywhere soon. Am more likely to off-load the P-L zooms as I also have the f:4 Pro Olympus and three sets of overlapping zooms is a bit much. Keeping the f:2.8s for its extra light gathering and the f:4 for its minuscule size. 🙂

If something is worth doing well, do it over and over again! While Olympus unveils a brilliant NEW 90mm macro lens, Lumix dazzles with an "upgrade" to a brilliant lens (Mark 2) that was an update to a stellar lens (Mark 1). I have the fabulous Mark 1 thanks to Emily's recommendation and MPB. Optically it's not very different from the Mark 2 which has now been limitedly "updated" for the Mark 3. WOW!? Lumix has dazzled with innovation in the S5ii and GH6 that have us awaiting further innovations like GH6ii/G9ii and brand new lenses like the Olympus 90mm macro. Come on, Panny! You can get us excited by innovating!

How sad am I to know that you were in Southport within the first second of being out of the studio? 😀 I have the Mk2 version, only because I killed the Mk1 version while out playing on the prom during Storm Ciara. I was having so much fun getting battered by the waves until the last one was so hard that it almost knocked me off my feet and dislodged the lens from my GH4. Thankfully my House Insurance is covered for User Stupidity. 🤣 Don't think I will upgrade my Mk2 because it is so freakin sharp. Its basically my Swiss Army knife of lenses when filming stuff. However my prime Leica 12mm is even sharper but sadly way way more spendy. Thankfully it was my first ever purchase from MPB. Got to admit that the lens internal stabilisation was a massive improvement from the Mk1 to Mk2.

Where is the link to the video you mentioned at the end of the video? It isn't anywhere to be found. I have had the Mark I (my son has it now), and recently picked up a Mark II used. The differences are subtle. There is less flare and faster focusing with the Mark II, and the contrast is a tad better. I'm sure the Mark III is even better, especially on cameras newer than my GH4, but probably not worth it to me to trade at this point. I'm waiting for a PDAF body in the GH line. I still can't believe they didn't put PDAF in the GH6, but then I understand they were under a lot of pressure to release a major upgrade to the GH5 line.

One interesting side thought, for those who keep saying, "M4/3s is dead", IF that were true, WHY would Panasonic invest R&D money to create new lenses? Clearly IF it was a dead Format, they'd never get any payback from their R&D investment for all the new and improved lenses.

I think the price has to be that high. Since the GH5 came out a lot of people got the 12-60mm as quality kit lens. I'm sure there will be new cameras with PDAF in the near future and they need a new, shiny kit lens to prevent people from buying body only. The new 12-35 will be reduced a lot in this kit and this is only possible if the price for the lens is high enough.

  • @FourKnown

I ordered a GH5 from MPB because of your recommendation (and that the price was good). It was $614 and in "Like new" condition with V-log and a cheap battery and charger. When I got it, the eyecup was missing, the battery door latch felt funny and the hot shoe was bent so I couldn't attach anything to it. They wanted me to pay for shipping to return it, so I had to call them. The phone number was tough to find. (Finally found it on the warranty page.) They agreed to send me a prepaid label finally. I will not deal with them again. Will send it off today.

That's a really weird mpb experience. Last year I complained about a camera I bought from them (Olympus Pen F) as the condition was much worse than the listing said - it turned out they'd sent the wrong one by accident. They paid for my return shipping, sent me the actual model I had selected and refunded my money because of all the trouble. I never asked for any of that, it was the standard experience and other photographers had similar stories. It sucks they've gone so far downhill based on your experience. That's absolutely abysmal. I was looking at some MFT lenses on there but I think I'll give them a miss now.

Not only it cheapens the brand, but mainly just - why? It's the first PanaLeica to use the ordinary Lumix switches, isn't it? @@MicroFourNerds I use a small pair of split ring pliers (for fisherman), they have slightly asymmetric finely toothed jaws that allow you to grip onto the bent section nicely. The toothing sort of slots into the thread of the filter ring. Tape a bit of cardboard to the lens glass if worried about scratching it, also put tape on outside where the jaws impact to avoid scratching. A firm squeeze and the dent will be gone.

Smaller? They should made it bigger, with f1.7 at least. Maybe it could have been as sharp as the 10-25mm. The main problem with m43 is slow and small lenses with to many compromises on the design. "Smallness" is mutually exclusive with sharpness.

2:00 I am pretty disappointed about manufactures doing again and again and again the same design. As we all know this market is shrinking like crazy (besides pros of course). People are filming themselves more than other people, to give just 1 example. So starting from 24mm is obsolete, a kind of. In this partikular case it actually the same design (external product design ment) since 11 years! Does not really show that Pana is investing anything in M43. Same goes for the G9II: Same body as a S5, just donwgraded, no sec. display and a worse viewfinder than in its own predecessor. And this is coming from a GH6 and PEN F user, so I like the system
