New listening turntable: Fluance RT83

Ғылым және технология

After being fed up with my vintage turntables for various reasons, I've decided that I need a new dedicated listening turntable. I chose the Fluance RT83 for it's Ortofon 2M Red cartridge which includes an elliptical stylus and for the improved motor. So far I've been very pleased with this turntable. My hope is that this will be a reliable turntable for decades to come to the point where I don't even think about it and I just listen to music.
I did mention that I thought there was an RT86 in the video. That is not so as of early 2019 when I'm writing this. The highest end model in Fluance's reference turntable series is the RT85.

Nice and detailed overview. Cheers for that. I had that same Sony model from around 2000 until late 2009 and it never let me down honestly, but now 11 more years on it's not surprising to hear they are starting to give people troubles. I've used a couple other since then and have had a Technics linear that I really do love since around 2013, but it's giving me grief for the 2nd time in a couple years so I'm looking, like you were, to pick up something I can not have to mess with for my day to day. Cheers.

I'm in the same boat with your comment of getting vintage vs new. I've been burned a couple times and as much as I like to tinker, I'm at the point of just wanting a nice table to work. I see it lasting a long time with proper care. That motor should be pretty bulletproof without physically dropping the table lol

Most people have no clue how accurate the 60hz coming from the line is. Years ago I toured a Generating plant and in the control room there was a recording frequency meter. There was a 12” wide “strip chart recorder that was recording the line frequency. In the middle was 60hz, to the left, 59hz and to the right 61hz. The pen never varied more than 1/8” deflection up or down. So you can be pretty sure the frequency is DEAD on.

Nice video!! I'm planning on the rt-82 because I have no need for the I'm red cartridge because of how many I have. Only difference between the 82-85 is cartridge and the top 85 comes with an acrylic platter instead of aluminum. It's on my very short list of next table. The motor is what sold me. Usually have to spend over $1500 for the servo controlled motor. Which isn't a huge deal until the belt wears on a table without it and you have to spend an hour messing with the tiny pots on the bottom of the plynth to get it "just right"

Love the new range of turntables from Fluance. Not sure we can get these in the U.K. as yet. Great attention to detail to include the white gloves to avoid finger prints and skin oil. Probably not the cleverest thing to unbox it on dusty carpet. I’ll be on the lookout for an RT85.

I notice with my table about the anti-skate, it's dead on when using the floats then set ring to zero and then set weight. But my weight isn't exact and I had to turn mine up when using the stylus pressure scale like you have. What I did was still float and set to zero but then set weight by the digital scale then set anti-skate to what the dial on the weight said which was higher than the 2.0 I set it to on my scale. I think it matches the dial on the weight well but when setting with a scale you may have to turn it up. Another side note about the CD test is if you don't have the CD centered the wobble affects the stylus and can cause it to move toward spindle or away. Best thing to use is an actual blank anti-skate record.

That looks like a nice turntable but I like the automatic turntables. I am using a realistic lab 440 which I bought new in the 80s, I remember it was a little expensive. I purchased a liner tracking turntable back in the 80s as well but unlike the one you have you can change the cartridge. It still works but the realistic lab 440 I like better. I thought about buying the fluance turntable but instead I put a Nagaoka MP110 cartridge on my old turntable and it sounds great.

Nice table good starting point servo motor is good. you can make flutter even better by putting the belt in a bag of talcum powder this will increase it's performance and the belt last longer, I would upgrade the platter and mat is the best improvement if you can, they will build you one if you ask achro platter by funk firm is the best way or just there 5mm achromat or 3 mm if you can't adjust vta, on the arm, And best improvement you can make isolate your turntable and speakers drastically help a lot get some rockwool 30mm thick cut it to the size required with a bread knife, place a piece of half an inch of ply or MDF on top place a turntable on top of this some with the speakers. Make a dramatic improvement

The gloves are for two things, 1 - To keep Fingerprints off that Beautiful Walnut - and second, static free handling / - I am assuming that. A couple tips from your "Uncle Kev" #1 - Get a Zero-Stat Anti-Static Gun and zap your turntable the same method as you would a Vinyl Record. #2, Clean your HVAC Air Filter. The turntable may have a slight static charge to it and trust me - dust magnet. I would zap it from time to time whenever you see it collecting more dust than other "Knickknacks / Furnishing close by. Also I would suggest going to Home Depot / Lowes and buy a high quality AC Filter that collects dust down to the lowest microns available - A typical Air Filter may run 8 bucks, a Low Micron Filter will run about 20 but worth every penny. And they last longer so kind of a break even when comparing costs. I realize I am a perfectionist, can't help it, and I have Moderate OCD so the "Minor" warping on the platter would drive me up a wall - Lol. Yes, I have to live with myself. I echo the comment on the stylus pressure gauge, either remove the stylus cover or weigh it on a gram scale so you can compensate for it when you adjust the tracking weight.

  • @craigclark2851

    @craigclark2851

Agreed - If your budget is $350, then the upgrade later to the acrylic platter is the right choice, will lower resonance, improve speed stability and improve overall clarity. However - If you can wait to spend the extra $150 more from the 83 to 85 (or $30 more than just the acrylic platter upgrade on the 83 ) you get the acrylic platter and the OM2 Blue on the 85. If you purchase the blue stylus separately it's $160, + the platter $120 total upgrade cost for both of $280. Spend $150 more now - save $130 later...

@@craigclark2851 That certainly breaks down the numbers. I'm pretty certain Fluance did the same numbers crunching too. In the end, I opted for the 85 just to be done with it. My only concern will be the expense of replacing the Blue stylus when the time comes. It would be senseless to replace it with the less expensive Red stylus now that I've spent the extra $ for the 85. Very happy with the TT, btw. It performs beautifully and sounds terrific.

Looking at that JVC, I never understood how anybody thought those thin, light tonearms were ever a good idea. They are so light, the arm will vibrate at audio frequencies and color the sound. The job of the tonearm is to hold the cartridge perfectly still, while the needle wiggles around. If the cartridge is vibrating too (because of low mass or sloppy bearings), that means audio energy and information is being lost.

The dust couldn't have anything to do with assembly on a dusty probably statically charged carpet? I've got a" listening" turntable as well, couldn't think of anything else to do with it. You should have mentioned your mistake doing the weighting with the stylus protector on, for those who did not notice the cut where you finally took it off. Are you still happy with the RT83? I'm on the fence between an U-turn Orbit Custom and a Fluance RT83 for my son's 21st birthday, both with 2M Red cartridges. The main difference is I could get an acrylic platter for the same price on the U-turn. What I don't get with U-turn is speed switch, adjustable feet, auto off, and the tone arm is more adjustable.

  • @arielargo

I think the Fluance is better value, sturdier, better built, and with the speed switch, auto-off and including the cue lever. It's a no brainier. I'm upgrading to the acrylic platter later.

@@arielargo Exactly why I'm going with the Fluance, especially the auto-off feature. Also, I just picked up an acrylic platter mat on E-Bay (much better than cork or rubber from the reviews) which will help mimic the platter, but for only 20.00 . As you said, you can upgrade the whole platter later for 120.00 if you want.

@@cbyarmak1462 I didn't think of Nuance. Google defined nuance as "a subtle difference in or shade of meaning, expression, or sound." That could be interpreted as detail in sound. If you take northlander's interpretation of "flu" as wave, then I guess you would call it detail in wave or sound waves. Anyway, a stick of dynamite should fix it...
