Hi! I just found your site and it's been a tremendous source of education for the mom of a pre-team 5.5 yo. Her gym does not teach her the tips you give. I have tried to find a site to find good gyms around me, but am not sure what to look for, & a trial class won't show everything. I've looked at different team competitions to see what gyms are represented but while that's important, it's not the most important. Do you have any recommendations on questions I should ask a potential new gym? I'd appreciate any advice. Thank you!

You definitely want to make sure that the gym you choose has optional level (level 6-10) gymnasts that are successful (scoring 36s, 37s and 38s). You can find this information on mymeetscores.com. Scoring well in lower level level gymnastics doesn’t always indicate a great program. You also want to ask them about their coaching philosophy and style. At FAA, all of our coaches are trained to have a positive coaching style and are hired if their personal values align with our mission. Red flags to look for are coaches who seem emotionally attached to the performances of their athletes and look upset if kids don’t do well. Coaches who act like “friends” to their athletes and don’t have a professional coach/athlete relationship with them. High rate of turn over within their team program. It’s always best to talk to parents of athletes that go to other gyms. Ask them if their kids feel valued, loved and respected. Ask them if their kids are ever too stressed to go to practice or beg not to go. There are a lot of unhealthy gym environments and it’s important to stay away from those gyms.

@Flight Athletic Academy Thank you so much for the questions to ask. I especially like how you demonstrate (ie on the level 2 beam example), little tips that my daughter doesn't receive. However, I would guess that 80 to 90% of the coaches at the gym are simply parents volunteering. I feel this is fine at the 2-4 yo level, but surely a coach should have experience as the students move closer to team? Even team coaches don't model the routine for the students. Would you recommend any books or podcasts? Again, thank you so much.

@@anneschmidt9587 Shift movement science podcast is awesome! Younger/inexperienced coaches are honestly fine for a long time. The foundation starts becoming most important around level 3/4.
