I live near the Kenworth factory, done three factory tours over thirty years, the place is so clean! The previous chief engineer was very approachable when it came to answering questions over the phone. An interesting fact is that they were importing the 610 cabs from the USA, and they had to be reinforced for Aussie conditions at the Bayswater factory, now apparently they have their own cab building machine. One reason they are building these one-piece cabs is that they are cheaper to build than the traditional Huck-bolted T and C series cabs. Kenworths are very expensive even though they are #1 seller for heavy duty trucks in Australia. We were told that to stay competitive in the lighter segment they had to build the newer one-piece cabs as well as the traditional built-up cabs for the T9s and C5s.

I've driven the paccar mx13 510 motor in both an auto DAF and two separate Kenworths with 18 speed road rangers. I definitely think the 18 speed road ranger is the way to go. I'd prefer a 550 c15 all day of the week though.

Thanks for video. Great footage. I really think they should put airbag on the steer to act like a shock, like the new paccar peterbilts would be great. Australian roads are rough and as a driver we feel every every formation and every fault of the road. A truck needs to be powerful enough not to be a hazard , comfortable to drive, all instruments and guages easily in view, accessories easily accessible, no wind noise and good fuel efficiency. Every kw I have driven is like a old LNT 9000 suspension in the front and steer when driving If she can do this maybe her new kenworth will be a legend.

Over the years, I've done casual, on call work for a small transport business here in Perth. It's mostly yard work, operating the forklift, loading, unloading, tarping, strapping, chaining down etc. But what really got me the job was the fact that the boss had an old Mack B61 that he used to ferry trailers out to the road train park at Bullsbrook - and I could drive it! It was a common occurrence for me drive into the park-up area in that old Mack and have young blokes come out of their trucks with their fancy-schmancy auto gearboxes, all agog at the twin stick, quad box setup. Whether it be road transport or earth moving, I have long believed that the best drivers and operators are the ones who learned their craft in or on some old busted-arse heap of shit of a truck or machine. It's an education that can't be taught if everything you do is monitored by sensors and light displays and all of the other high-tech gadgetry we have now. The best monitors in any truck or machine are the ones on the side of your head. They're called ears and that's what the best of the old timers used. You learn to listen to your machine!

The engineers are relatively useless. They just shove stuff in and don't talk to the workers whether it's a good idea or not and then when they're told it's a bad idea, they just run away and hide in the office avoiding them. Hell to even get the ball rolling on making a change to something simple takes years. Prime example is a new stainless coolant pipe was added to the cummins, it took them 3 years for a simple pipe....... Just useless

Too bad it's not like it used to be ,where you could pick the engines you wanted. No Detroit Diesel 60 series, no Caterpillars. Obviously you won't see a Detroit in any other trucks except the American truck companies that Damiler-Benz owns, Freightliner & WesternStar.I think Cat actually got out of the truck engine business because of trying to meet emissions standards. They stopped making their own road trucks. If I remember the article correctly, the engine in those trucks wasn't a Cat but an International!

  • @L1FEL1KE02
