The latest Honda Jazz carries over the best talents of its predecessors, most notably the impressively spacious and flexible interior. This time it has a clever hybrid powertrain for low running costs and there’s also a new 4x4-influenced Crosstar EX model alongside the regular hatchback. Is this enough for the new Jazz to shake off its dowdy image? Rich Ingram heads to the Carbuyer test track to find out.

Overall this was a good review, but with a mistake regarding the gearbox - the car does not have a CVT, and as it forms a big part of the narrative of your review, you should perhaps correct this by at least mentioning the fact in your video description. Although in practice, the setup can feel a bit like a CVT. The latest Jazz doesn't use a continuously variable transmission. It doesn't actually have a gearbox at all. The 1.5-litre petrol engine basically acts as a generator, providing battery charge for the electric motor, which at lower speeds is the sole means of propulsion. There's a lock-up clutch between the engine and the wheels, for direct drive at roughly motorway speeds via a single fixed-gear transmission. From the Honda UK website: "It comprises two powerful electric motors connected to a 1.5-litre DOHC i-VTEC petrol engine, a lithium-ion battery and an innovative fixed-gear transmission via an intelligent power control unit, which all work harmoniously together to provide a smooth and direct response" "Rather than using a conventional transmission, a single fixed-gear ratio creates a direct connection between moving components, resulting in smoother acceleration as well as enhanced ride comfort due to the low friction suspension and rigid body."
Nice to see a good, balanced, objective review with no snide, cheap, ageist digs. Great little car - just bought one!

The magic seats have been used in Honda's for years. I own a 2007 Honda Civic, which I have had from new and it has the same type of magic seats within it. Since Honda expanded the size of the civic with the Mk10 to cover the market that was previously taken by the Accord in many markets, the last two versions of the Jazz have been covering the bottom end of the Civic market once occupied by the Civic Mk8. Another advantage of the magic folding seats is that you can place bicycles of certain sizes within the area with the seats folded up.
I've had three of them. This will be my fourth. Eventually.

@@jalmaser2317 To be honest, JAL, I like the mk3, because of the smart tailgate, and it has a slightly larger boot than the new mk4, but I love the new interior of the new car, the materials look a fair bit better than in my current motor.
Nice review. Just one point to correct - this doesn't have a CVT transmission like, e.g. the one all Toyota hybrids have. Instead the Jazz uses a hybrid system that combines a single fixed-gear ratio transmission with 2 electric motors to get you moving. Sometimes, the electric motor provides drive - powered by the battery. Sometimes the electric motor provides drive - powered by the battery which is being topped up by the petrol engine. In this mode, the engine revs would vary as the power requirements of the electric motor vary. Lastly, the petrol engine provides drive via the fixed ratio with occasional help from the electric motor if there is relevant power demands and sufficient stored battery power to satisfy them. The second motor works as a generator to top up the battery. All very clever but simple at the same time and very fuel efficient. A 0 - 60 of about 9 seconds is decent and probably better than the equivalent Yaris. But like Toyota hybrids with their planetary CVT transmission, the Jazz disguises it's acceleration to those more used to conventional systems and can appear slow when in fact its not!
That's the definition of a practicle small car. Good job Honda.

Can't argue with that!
For the market this car is aimed at the Jazz seems to have found a large amount of loyal fans, I think this is going to grow on that and might even start to appeal to younger families with its tiny SUV styling and very family friendly interior.
Really like Honda's latest interiors.

I just bought Jazz in Summer and I am turning 30 in Fall. Best decision ever. Cheers from Czech Republic. 🙂
I like the way it looks in this video.
Does the new Jazz still have the older Jazz' VVT engine? I remember that one was very ordinary pottering around (like many Jazz owners do...ahem) but really took off at higher revs, transformed into a GTi! What a surprise! A shame it had the same styling as the over-done Civic.
I've had the... 2014 model, I think. Currently have the 2018. I'm in the US though, so sadly, I'll not be able to go buy one of these newer models. Honda discontinued it here and it's sad. Not just Honda, but I think all car companies have discontinued their hatchback vehicles.
I think the jazz looks kinda cute..but I just noticed the screen and climate controls are offset to the left and not centred...May not bother me if I actually had the car but looking at it..oh man it bugs me xD
Bring this to the US!!
So they used a honda cr-v third generation front on this vehicle?
When it will be launched in India ?
4:46 Crosstar spec loses heated steering wheel and the blind-spot monitor though. Don't ask me why, I was confused on my test drive myself.
My one is the immediate predecessor, 3rd gen. The trick here with 3rd & 4th gen jazz (or Fit) is not to think of them as a Fiesta or corsa equivalent. But think of it as a mini mpv or mini van….more like the Vauxhall Meriva, Nissan Note, and Ford B Max.
More impressed with the interior than the exterior. The standard version has a front that looks like it's been punched in the nose.. The front on this Cross star looks OK since it has a grille in my opinion..

the interior is good looking and practical but what was honda thinking with that front end, we won't gejt this model in US anyway
Appreciate that unlike the Yaris, Honda has kept true to their spacious, functional, short bonnet supermini formula instead of giving customers what the heck they think they want; unnecessarily more cramped, harchback lookalikes that look more ’muscular’.
Living in the US, I am a bit sad this latest generation isn't being offered here. I still own my 2007 first generation Fit (Jazz) Sport and it's served me well but I can't say I'm a fan of the last 2020 MY Fit which doesn't have the appeal of the first gen.
Where is it built now? Japan? Quality will be down if built anywhere else.

To be fair it looks more in line with the upcoming Civic and especially upcoming H-RV, Honda is doing a complete 180 in design. This Crosstar version looks a bit less upcoming Honda though as it has a separate grille, the regular version shown at 4:13 shares lots of design elements with upcoming models.
@armands3153

@@shroomyesc I don't know. Those wide rounded headlights and those curved rear quarter windows and taillights doesn't associate me with the Hondas of today at all. I can see the first generation Jazz in it, but no other model in production today and in the future doesn't resemble their older generations at all - everything is sharp, narrow and rather aggressive. What an odd thing for them to do with this model. This kinda reminds me of Chris Bangle's BMWs, which kinda strived to look apart from each other, but they still looked like BMWs. This doesn't look like a Honda to me of today. Doesn't even look like a Honda in general. More like a new generation Meriva with styling cues from Adams released in 2017. Feels a bit dated.

This is basically a Honda Jazz Cross, which is bigger and taller, comparing to standard Honda Jazz 4th generation. In my own opinion, it's a strange car. I own the previous generation Honda Jazz, and it's really much "sporty" than this one. Wouldn't buy this one, but I'm sure true Honda Jazz fans (who had first and second generation Honda Jazz) will buy it for sure. It's biggest advantage is fuel economy, as far as I know Honda Jazz consumes as low as 3.2 l/100 km in city, which is a pretty nice parameter you should consider when choosing this car.
There is no CVT gearbox. The lack of preparation for this video is disappointing…..
Its like crv gen 2
Honda jazz in china more beauty design than global jazz
It's unfortunate that Honda seems bound and determined to take this from being a world car to a Japan-and-Europe-only one. From what I've seen of the next-generation HR-V this looks like a much more convincing "small crossover" than it, while the current HR-V lingers on the US market with its' hokey mid-decade overstyling, which in turn was more cluttered and less functional than the 3rd gen Fit.
Gorod to see Honda have ditched the hideous body creases. Their designers were getting carried away, and the result was over-styling at it's worst. The Civic was even worse......
Atomic insect - why!!?
Kia picanto honda brio look
Still can't believe the original version of this car could out-slalom a Ferrari. Oh well, another great car killed by the desire for mediocrity. At least it will theoretically be reliable.
Actually looks like a renault
No honda owner would ever want to have their car turned into a Ferrari
Not a fan of this current generation Honda Jazz, I think the previous versions looks better, Honda designers have just made it look more bulbous, To be fair looks aside and the fact that we have owned one in the past, Practicality wise, Reliability wise, it's true, it is rather good, The interior looks better and I do remember our older one to have a comfy ride. If I was to pick a Honda Jazz to take home with me, I would take the previous version any day.
